Queenscliff Tunnel
This tunnel was constructed in 1908 by local fishermen as a shortcut through from Queenscliff beach to Freshwater beach to the north. Unfortunately rock falls on the Freshwater side make it hard to continue further on that side.
Fletchers Bellarine - 44 Gellibrand Street, Queenscliff - James Gladman
Standing tall at the edge Port Phillip Bay in captivating Queenscliff, the magnificent Lathamstowe, is a Victorian heritage registered masterpiece of deep historical significance.
Spread over two sprawling stories with a rooftop terrace and viewing tower, this prominent yet immensely private mansion sits on an expansive, 1640 sqm allotment with frontages to Gellibrand and Stokes Street, nestled between Queenscliff's town centre and seaside.
This remarkable property is now available to be restored as a luxury family residence, with approved renovation plans designed by leading Melbourne Heritage architect, 'Threthowan Achitecture', Interiors by 'Hecker Guthrie' and landscape design by 'Paul Bangay'.
Lathamstowe was built as a gift from astute and aristocratic businessman Edward Latham to the Anglican Clergy to be used as a retreat and resting place. As former owner of Carlton United Breweries, Latham recognised relaxed, well-positioned Queenscliff as a place of total serenity, surrounded by ocean and wetlands, yet easily reached from Melbourne. Completed on May 1, 1883, the building was designed by Melbourne architect William J. Ellis and constructed by Thomas William Dally of Fitzroy.
Historical documents note Lathamstowe's signature flat roof was extraordinary for it's time and was possibly the first of it's kind in Victoria.
The rooftop was specifically designed to allow for promenading and taking in the property's astounding views across Port Phillip Bay, the township of Queenscliff, Swan Bay, towards Point Nepean and in the distance, the bright lights of Melbourne.
Today, the property's identical colonnaded facades continue to stand at Gellibrand and Stokes Street, towering over broad first floor verandahs and second floor balconies. Old-world flourishes including Brooks, Robinson & Co stained glass windows, pressed metal ceilings, marble fireplaces and a cast iron spiral stairway to the peak of the 23-metre tower remain.
Lathamstowe was originally configured as a duplex. Current approved restoration plans offer buyers a wonderful opportunity to transform it into a single residence of unmatched opulence, should they desire.
As per the approved plans, on the ground floor, the grand entrance hall is flanked by a bedroom and billiards room with adjoining sitting room. Also on the ground floor are two further bedrooms, both with walk-in wardrobes and en suites, a gym with private bathroom, office with powder room, a studio, meeting room, laundry and kitchenette that services the resort-style atrium pool.
The striking staircase leads past original stained glass windows to the first floor comprising the main bedroom and living areas - all of which feature outstanding ocean views. The palatial master bedroom features a vast walk-in wardrobe and en suite.
The stunning kitchen features a considerable butlers pantry - ideal for entertaining guests - as well as a dining room, library with adjoining living area, sunroom or informal dining area and two further guest bedrooms, both with en suites and built in wardrobes.
An elevator services each level from the basement to the extraordinary landscaped rooftop terrace, which offers ocean views from Point Lonsdale towards Melbourne as well as the boutique streets of Queenscliff, multiple lighthouses and shipping channels.
With an air of elegance that has remained for more than a Century, Lathamstowe is one of Victoria's unmissable and defining properties.

History:
Prior to European settlement, it was inhabited by the Bengalat Bulag clan of the Wautharong tribe, a member of the Kulin nation.
European explorers first arrived in 1802, Lieutenant John Murray in January and Captain Matthew Flinders in April. The first European settler in the area was convict escapee William Buckley between 1803 and 1835, latterly in a cave beneath the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse, with the local Aborigines.
Permanent settlement began in 1836 when squatters arrived in the area known as Whale Head. The name was changed to Shortland's Bluff in honour of Lieutenant John Shortland, who assisted in the surveying of Port Phillip. Land sales began in 1853, the same year the name was changed to Queenscliff by Lieutenant Charles La Trobe, in honour of Queen Victoria.
The Post Office opened on 1 May 1853 as Shortland's Bluff and was renamed Queenscliff in 1854.

Originally a fishing village, Queenscliff soon became an important cargo port, servicing steamships trading in Port Philip. A shipping pilot service was established in 1841, and its two lighthouses, the High and Low Lights, were constructed in 1862-63. Queenscliff also played an important military role.[4] Fort Queenscliff was built between 1879 and 1889, and operated as the command centre for a network of forts around the port.[5]

A visit to the Bellarine Railway - Rail Spectacular 2019
In this video we visit the Bellarine Railway located on the Bellarine Peninsula near Geelong. Running between the towns of Queenscliff and Drysdale the railway is unique for being the only 1067mm gauge railway in Victoria, and hosts rollingstock from interstate including Tasmania and Queensland, as well as rollingstock from the former Fyansford Cement Works Railway.
On this particular day the railway was operating a special charter train, organised by travel company Cruise Express as part of their Rail Spectacular 2019 tour. Earlier in the day passengers traveled to Geelong from Melbourne with steam locomotive A2 986, where they were then bused to the railway.
In this video we see the charter trip in action, departing Drysdale and capturing it along the way to Queenscliff. After a brief photo and lunch stop at Queenscliff we then see the train return to Drysdale. The train was hauled by two Tasmanian Government Railway X Class locomotives; X3 & X20. Entering service from 1950 to 1952 they were the first mainline diesel to enter service in Australia.
Check out the trip to Geelong with A2 986 here:
This video was filmed in conjunction with Comeng998. Cheers for letting me tag along.

Entering through the grand, timber-panelled front door, a feeling of space and light immediately settles, and eyes are drawn upwards, through the light well that soars upwards, revealing further use of timber panelling on the ceiling of the top floor. It's just one of many contemporary design features in this stunning, modern family home, designed by Watershed Design architects and expertly built by Lawson and Lovell Builders.
Giving a strong first-impression is the steel framed, timber-cladded cantilever at the front of the property, which stretches out, appearing to float above the building. The use of spotted gum timber flooring and panelling is an attractive feature that flows throughout the entire house, adding warmth, character and style - bringing spaces together, or separating them subtly.
A beautiful continuity has been achieved in the upstairs living spaces. The quiet and secluded lounge area is separated from the open-plan kitchen and dining area by a timber-panelled wall. The state-of-the-art kitchen is finished with stainless steel and gas appliances, a Caesarstone island bench top, and plentiful cabinetry that promotes a sleek, clean look to the space. Large sliding doors open up to invite in the sounds and smells of the ocean, and the entertaining-sized balcony provides the perfect spot for an alfresco meal, or afternoon catch up with a friend.
Downstairs, all bedrooms are generously sized, carpeted, have concealed air-con, and an extravagant amount of in-built wardrobe and storage space. The master bedroom is private and luxurious, with solid timber-framed sliding doors that lead to an enclosed garden, and an immaculate en-suite with bespoke details that are in keeping with the rest of the house, such as mirrored storage cupboards lined with timber veneer, as well as under-floor heating and heated towel rails.
Design hasn't been forgotten on the bottom level of this three-level masterpiece, which features a secure double garage, sizeable home office and another bathroom, complete with shower and internal laundry.
With a bus stop a few doors down that will take you to Warringah Mall or Manly Wharf, this property is undeniably well-connected. You are spoilt for choice with Queenscliff, Freshwater and Manly beaches 'Sydney's best' just moments away. Freshwater village, a blossoming hub of boutique shops and eateries is a five-minute walk away. Or take a leisurely stroll along the beachfront to Manly, with all of its many attractions.

Unveiling of the Manly memorial, 16/10/1916 Australian Gazette. No.312.
The unveiling of a monument for Alan David Mitchell, the first soldier from Manly (New South Wales, Australia) to die in the First World War. Erected by his parents and unveiled on 14 October 1916, the monument remains in place along The Corso in Manly. Over time it has been updated to commemorate all those from the district who have died fighting in conflicts from the South African War to Afghanistan.
Sir Munro Ferguson, Governor General of Australia, and his party are seen arriving to unveil a memorial in the Sydney suburb of Manly on 14 October 1916. The memorial was erected by Mr and Mrs Mark Mitchell. Their son Alan David Mitchell was the first soldier from Manly to die in the war, after wounds received at Gallipoli. As the flag goes up and the camera slowly pans, the couple seated in a prominent position, with the woman in dark attire, is likely to be the Mitchells.
Atop the column is a globe of the world with Australia featured upon it. The word ANZAC is engraved on a band circling the globe. The two flags flanking the memorial are the Australian National Flag and the Union Jack. A raised wide shot captures the crowd around the memorial.
