Why young Russians are racing with faulty, Cold War-era cars
On the streets of Moscow, young Russians are participating in a highly symbolic race: they’re scooping up Ladas, an old-school emblem of the Cold War era, and racing them against fancier, Western sports cars. NewsHour Weekend Special Correspondent Nick Schifrin talks to them about the nostalgia and patriotism behind the races.

Julia Chapman reports on how the perception has been changing of a man who killed millions of his own people.

The ruling state of the southern China sea region faced a colossal military challenge to the US
#military #chinasea #us
SOUTH CHINA SEA tensions between the US and China have erupted in recent years as both nations compete for superiority in the contested region. But under the radar, a third superpower, Russia, has slowly began to take note of the resource rich waters, and has even defied the US in colossal military exercises with Beijing's forces.
In September 2016, China and Russia embarked on the exercises flaunting the military prowess of both nations in a defiant challenge to the US in the South China Sea. They were the fifth Beijing-Moscow exercises in four years, signifying a growing threat for US Navy in the region as it looks to thwart China's accelerating militarisation of island clusters and dominance over trade. The exercises featured naval surface ships, submarines, fixed-wing aircraft, ship-borne helicopters, marine corps, and amphibious armoured equipment from both navies.

School of creativity - reinventing the world in the digital age (3/6) | DW Documentary
Part 3 of Reinventing the World - 500 years of the Reformation examines the parallels between the 18th century and today.
Enlightenment thinkers are juxtaposed to modern-day activists, such as the writer Laurie Penny and the architect Van Bo Le-Mentzel.
The age of enlightenment dawned in Europe in the 18th century. People began to believe that humanity holds the key to creating a better world. Among them was Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, the philosopher and mathematician, who posited the idea that humankind lives in the best of all possible worlds, and are rational beings capable of bringing order to chaos. In this episode we also explore the life and times of German playwright Gotthold Ephraim Lessing and French revolutionary Olympe de Gouges.
In the 17th century - the century of the Enlightenment - the new faith in reason laid the foundations for modern, western society. Today, nearly 300 years after Leibniz lived, the digital age is seen by many as the fulfillment of the dream of the enlightened individual. But is reason enough?
This episode’s present-day protagonists include feminist blogger Laurie Penny and architect and visionary Van Bo Le-Mentzel. They speak about hope, happiness and whether knowledge of different cultures is enough for peace to prevail.

After quipping that his wife should attend housewife school, Valery Gusev was shocked at the discovery that there was no such institution - so he set one up himself. Clearly, funding and staffing the school would prove easier than learning to cook for himself... It’s an all-round winner, with women being able to “exchange our secrets with each other’” while the men look forward to the benefits of better cooking, sewing and gardening. Yet ironically, the enjoyment that these busy women gain from this self-improvement venture, leaves little time for other things – including the acquiring of a husband. So while Gusev maintains that “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach”, one student claims that “to find a husband is not the main goal”...

Russian people were not afraid of Stalin before election
Song: Good Morning by Rafael Brom on iTunes

Today, Marxism-Leninism represents a most complex and powerful doctrine developed by Communist theoreticians and practitioners in every corner of the world. 'Its universal library offers dynamic political weapons and comprehensive theories, diversified approaches and seductive slogans. On one side of the globe, there is the Yugoslav moderate theory of reformed Communism and participative economy which lures masses into socialism. On the other side of the earth there are Chinese slogans which are more productive in inflaming a Communist revolution.
Marxism-Leninism is particularly effective on the semantic level where it exhibits a devastating duality. It lulls its adversaries to sleep, while at the same time it mobilizes its followers to revolutionary action. The Communist International's Seventh Congress concluded that open use of revolutionary terminology does not promote the Marxist-Leninist drive for world domination. Therefore, revolution has been changed into liberation, world conquest by the proletariat has speen changed into peace and socialism, armed seizure of power and liquidation of the bourgeoisie has been rephrased to read peaceful and gradual transition to socialism.''
Even the word Communism, which every revolutionary is so proud of, has been changed into progressive, anti-Fascist or liberal. Further, to confuse their adversaries, the Marxist-Leninists have devised a new language which uses old words in the basic vocabulary. When they say imperialism arouses the wrath of the people and digs its own grave, they mean through our manipulation of the local Communist parties, and with a vast auxiliary corps of dupes ; and sympathizers, we so arrange matters that the free enterprise system and democracy are destroyed from within. All we need to do is push it into the grave.
Thus, the free, complacent, conscience-stricken, guilt-ridden, sex-sodden, drug-driven, decadent, and often antagonistic societies have been manipulated by goal-oriented, dedicated, and shrewd Marxist-Leninist dialectics into a notorious period of so-called peaceful coexistence and plain overt hostilities. Ditente has become not the hope of free people everywhere, but rather their doom. Ditente does not necessarily spell out the end of the struggle between the two social systems, says Pravda. The struggle will continue between the proletariat and the bourgeoisie.
In other words, the so-called ditente is nothing more than a form of Marxist-Leninist art skillfully geared toward pacifying the American public by encouraging them to act ridiculously nice while the Communists kick the daylights out of them. The result is that the free world continues to shrink. Democracies cannot handle periods of low-tension confrontation. They have - an almost universal desire to believe that peace is the natural condition of man, that armies are temporary nuisances, that conflicts of interest can be dissolved simply by a policy of good will. Unfortunately, nothing is further from the truth; but for some reason free people prefer to believe it.
