Using coal and kerosene to fuel a stove is both costly and hazardous. Social entrepreneur Crosby Menzies hopes it will become a thing of the past in Africa. He rolled out his solar cooker, a satellite-dish shaped oven that uses sunlight to cook meals, in the Johannesburg township of Soweto. By employing locals like Mthobisa Cebekhulu, he believes he can bring it to other impoverished parts of the continent.

Warthog Shooting South Africa & Plains Game Hunting Africa 2019
There was a big trophy male warthog that we were after but the rifle had not been checked for its range.
We were given four chances to shoot this warthog when one should have been enough.
we were up at first light the next morning to go warthog shooting to try and catch up with the large male warthog that had been missed on the evening hunt of the day before, but that old male warthog was not going to give us a second chance, but we did manage to shoot a nice sized male warthog the next morning.

SOUTH AFRICA: NATIONAL DEFENCE FORCE TRAINING
English/Nat
South Africa's military, once seen as the iron fist of the apartheid regime, has had to march quickly to integrate black and white soldiers since the country's turn to democracy five years ago.
And now the South African National Defence Force is for the first time training men and women soldiers together.
The Army Gymnasium at Heidelberg.
It is one of two units that have integrated the training of male and female soldiers to supply the country's 16 army corps.
The other is Number Three Infantry Batallion which is the training depot of the South African army.
But there men and women are only trained to the level of rifleman for the Rapid Deployment Forces and part-time forces.
SOUNDBITE: (in English)
I think we're doing a great job. We're keeping up to the men's standards. We're working just as hard as them if not harder because we don't have that masculine physical ability. And I think it's great.
SUPER CAPTION: Tanya Fraser, Army recruit
SOUNDBITE: (in English)
I feel good about the whole thing. But I feel sometimes I am a woman in a man's world. But I'll make it and we, the ladies, are doing the best out of it.
SUPER CAPTION: Ladymore Babi, Army recruit
The 46-week course at Army Gymnasium includes ten weeks of basic training; a 13-week leadership development process; 12-weeks learning how to instruct new recruits; 13-weeks in which an individual soldier works towards becoming either a Non-Commissioned Officer or an Officer; and a final two weeks in which one is taught the basics of being a physical training instructor.
SOUNDBITE: (in English)
The Army Gymnasium's aim and function is to train leaders for the 16 official corps of the South African army and this is the first time that men and women will undergo this training at the same training institution, doing exactly the same training curriculum and
reaching the same objectives.
SUPER CAPTION: Colonel Antoni Bornman, Officer Commanding Army Gymnasium
During the Leadership Development Programme a soldier is assessed as to whether they make the grade to become a cadet or a Non-Commissioned Officer.
This decision is made on the individual's profile as well as the needs of the army.
It is in this phase that the soldiers are expected to walk 80 kilometres in three days in full kit.
Women soldiers carry a slightly lighter kit.
But it is in this phase that the leadership and military skills of the soldiers are put to the test.

LEAD IN:
The first ever all-African military aircraft has been unveiled in Johannesburg (September 27, 2011).
The lightweight armed reconnaissance plane is a first for the continent, and makers say early orders could be worth up to half a billion dollars (USD).
STORYLINE:
This is the AHRLAC - The Advanced High-Performance Reconnaissance Light Aircraft - and its launch is a landmark moment for Africa.
Ivor Ichikowitz, CEO of the Paramount Group unveiled the aircraft at a packed press conference in Johannesburg (Tuesday September 27).
We find ourselves here today to announce a completely revolutionary aerial platform. A platform that has multiple applications in both the civilian as well as the military environment. An aircraft that responds to global challenges. Ladies and gentleman we are here today to unveil to you AHRLAC, says Ichikowitz.
Makers Paramount Group and Aerosud Holdings say it''''s the first ever all-African military plane, designed and built entirely by African companies.
Johannesburg-based Paramount Group boss Ivor Ichikowitz says the lightweight aircraft can be used for combat, peacekeeping and reconnaissance missions. It''''s also armed to defend itself.
He says that, as well as being a surveillance aircraft, the AHRLAC combines the capabilities of a drone and an attack helicopter.
The rear-mounted propeller allows an unrestricted view from the bulbous cockpit that houses two.
Ichikowitz says he''''s received an order from a country he would not name for 50 of the planes, each costing about USD 10 (m) million.
That''''s about half or less the cost of an Apache attack helicopter which Boeing sells for around USD 20 (m) million.
We have not designed a fighter jet here. We have not designed the next generation supersonic aircraft. We have designed an aircraft that has the potential to sell in its hundreds, if not thousands, and be cost effective for both first world as well as emerging market, defence forces in the current environment, says Ichikowitz.
Paramount say their plane can do much the same job, at a fraction of the cost.
Start up development budget was around USD 200 (m) million, says Ichikowitz.

City of Johannesburg Council approves 2018/2019 Budget
City of Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba has finally tabled his R59-billion budget.
The Johannesburg City Council finally passed the 2018/2019 budget after failing to do so in the previous sittings.
It comes after the EFF demanded that water and electricity tariffs be lowered.
Opposition parties in the city council have rejected Mashaba's budget twice in the past two weeks, calling it anti-poor.
To talk to us more about this we have the Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba and to give an opposition voice I'm joined by Geoff Makhubo ANC Councillor and former Joburg MMC for Finance.

Wing shooting hunts in South Africa are the best wing shooting that the African continent has to offer. South Africa has developing market for wing shooting an industry that many are know refer to as the ‟next Argentina” of bird hunting. South Africans have been enjoying their world-class wing shooting for decades, but it is only in the last 20 years that wing shooting in South Africa has started to emerge on the international wing shooting scene. Wing shooting hunts in South Africa are now common in most provinces, and companies that specialize in wing shooting have emerged providing their services. A much more common scenario is for a plains game safari provider to offer these additional services as add-ons to a traditional plains game safari. Most of these add-ons are for a three or four day duration, as the dogs will begin to tire after several days of constant hunting.
Although most provinces of South Africa currently offer some level of wing shooting services, a few of the provinces stand out from the others by offering a multitude of wing shooting opportunities for different species to hunt. The Free State, especially around the judicial capital of Bloemfontein, stands out as one of the better areas for wing shooting hunts in South Africa. The Northwest Province also offers good wing shooting and a visiting hunter can hunt waterfowl in the morning, hunt upland game over pointers in the daytime, and return to waterfowl hunting in the late afternoon.
Four Season’s Shooting offers some of the finest wing shooting hunts in South Africa. Four Season’s has established and built up a healthy business catering to international hunters. One of the specialty hunts is the driven hunt. Guinea fowl and Francolin are driven over hunters by more than 20 chanting Lesotho’s drive the game birds forwards.

Energy producers hope govt will announce the Gas-to-Power programme
Energy producers in the private sector are hoping that a solid way forward regarding the Gas-to-Power programme will be announced soon by government. South Africa is on a quest to develop natural gas as a power source alongside other options such as solar and wind.
This is part of a plan to reduce its reliance on coal and to diversify the energy mix. But lack of detail is frustrating that industry...This emerged at the two day Africa Power Roundtable held in Johannesburg.
