About Quetzaltrekkers Guatemala
We are the only all non-profit, all volunteer-run trekking and outdoors association in Guatemala.
Quetzaltrekkers was founded in 1995 as a means of self-sustainable, grassroots fundraising for the functioning of Associación Escuela de la Calle (EDELAC), with the overall aim of combating the unfortunate reality of children living and working on the streets of Quetzaltenango. Our job is to see that tourism dollars directly benefit those Guatemalans that need them most: namely, street children and children at risk of becoming street children. We do this by running tourist-oriented, guided-treks through the beautiful Guatemalan highlands: hence the slogan, ’Hike and Help’.

Best Hiking in Lake Atitlan and Xela Guatemala | Quetzaltrekkers 3 Day Trek
Hiking and enjoying the beautiful surroundings of Mother Nature is one of the best things you can do while in Guatemala. I joined a 3 day trek with Quetzaltrekkers, a group who donates 100% of the proceeds from trekkers to impoverished kids in the Guatemalan Highlands. Tons of the kids who live in these extremely rural areas don’t have access to quality schools so the money that Quetzaltrekkers donates helps these kids get transportation to quality schools.
Their motto is “Hike Volcanos. Help Kids”.
Easy enough and really a great program. If you’re interested in learning more, check them out at
This was definitely some of the best hiking in Lake Atitlan and Xela that you can do. I couldn't recommend it more to any and all nature lovers! Check out the Quetzaltrekkers 3 Day Trek if interested.

Become a Hiking Guide - Quetzaltrekkers Guatemala
Want to hike above the clouds? Watch volcanoes erupt? And help kids get an education by doing it?
We are always looking for new volunteers to train as hiking guides!
At Quetzaltrekkers, we are all working as volunteer guides and we manage virtually all aspects of the organization.
In our office you won’t find a boss or a supervisor, but you will find a tight-knit team of dedicated, super sexy volunteers committed to the organization and the cause. We can’t think of a place where you’d be given this much autonomy and responsibility working as a volunteer. Life here can be hectic and the days can be long. Ultimately, though, working as a Quetzaltrekker guide is an incredibly rewarding experience and, well, a lot of fun.

Through the countryside and corn fields and villages that rarely see tourists, to a mountain top over looking Lake Atitlan where we sat and watched the sunrise.

Proyecto lingüístico de Quetzaltenango
Proyecto Lingüístico Quetzalteco is a language school recognized for the high quality of its Spanish as a Second Language program. Our intensive Spanish course is entirely personalized (one-on-one teaching) and is focused on the student learning communication skills for daily life. In this way, students acquire competency in Spanish expression and comprehension (oral, written, and listening).
The course is taught by a team of professors who have extensive and recognized experience teaching Spanish as a Second Language. Proyecto Lingüístico´s teachers use methodological and didactic concepts to create a teaching-learning process that is dynamic and fun, and that makes learning Spanish interactive and fast from the first day.
Furthermore, the course allows students to discover the rich culture and history of Guatemala in particular and of Central America more generally through different class activities (conversations, readings, etc.). PLQ students also learn Spanish in a context in which they can participate in social, cultural, political, and sports activities, which provide practical opportunities to use the language skills being acquired. This course is offered at Proyecto Lingüístico Quetzalteco in Xela and La Escuela de la Montaña
All of our courses run on flexible timelines; students may choose to study for as many weeks as they’d like.
