Qunicy Stamp Mill 4K
The Quincy Mining Company Stamp Mill No. 1 is a historic stamp mill located on Torch Lake between Dollar Bay and Hubbell, MI. It was used to crush copper-bearing rock, separating the copper ore from surrounding rock.
The Dredge No. 2 is currently sunk in shallow water in Torch Lake. It was constructed to reclaim stamping sand from the lake for further processing.

David French Bungles Iraq, Again
Aristotle said man is a rational animal. A more cynical observer might say he is a rationalizing one. Learning is hard enough on its own, but it is nearly impossible when personal biases cloud out clear thought.
Such is the case with David French, a senior writer at National Review. On the 16th anniversary of the Iraq War last week, French published a defense of that conflict. It isn’t surprising to see why. French himself served in Iraq as a judge advocate general (JAG). He lost friends there.
Admitting that such sacrifices might well have been in vain cannot be easy. But if we fail to confront honestly the failures that led to that war then we do them and future generations an even greater disservice. We must let pretty lies perish and face the plain truth: the invasion of Iraq was a mistake.
French’s defense of the war rests on a weak foundation. He believes, contra John Quincy Adams, that America should go abroad in search of monsters to destroy.
French notes that Saddam Hussein “invaded his neighbors, gassed his people, harbored and supported terrorists, and was responsible for not one but two of the largest conventional military conflicts since World War II—the horrific Iran-Iraq war and Operation Desert Storm.”
French continues, pointing out that Hussein was the “prime supporter” of a Palestinian bombing campaign against Israel and that he “violated the Gulf War cease-fire accords, interfered with weapons inspections, and hid away chemical weapons by the thousands.” French is correct: Saddam was a nasty dictator. But this world is full of such men. Is it really America’s sacred mission to rid the world of meanness?
French says “yes.” In doing so, he ignores the wisdom of America’s Founders.

Governor unveils education vision in Quincy
QUINCY -- Gov. Deval Patrick envisions full-day kindergarten, smaller class sizes, a longer school day with more experiential education and free community college and apprenticeship programs.
The governor launched his quest to create a comprehensive education plan for the state with a town-hall style meeting in Quincy on Thursday night, using the grass-roots style employed last year in his campaign for governor.
What I'm interested in is what strate gies we can put in place, he told the au dience of more than 100 people at the Merrymount School in the city's Adams Shore neighborhood. Is this the right vi sion in your view?
Patrick asked residents community members to ask themselves how much education makes a difference, what outcomes they want, how much it would cost and how much they are willing to pay.
He said they should look not only at what they should be doing but also at what they should stop doing.
Among other things, people in the audience expressed concern about creating more unfunded mandates and talked about creating spaces where parents could get information about other public programs.
There's no doubt in my mind if we are as ambitious in the next 10 years as I want us to be, we are going to have to raise revenues, Patrick said.
Asked about neighborhood schools, Patrick said he walked to school and considers neighborhood schools a wonderful model. But he also said he believes in a reasonable amount of choice and that diversity in the student body is good.
Patrick reiterated his commitment to giving in-state college tuition to the children of illegal immigrants.
Yes, we'll get this sorted, he said to a group of people wearing Same State, Same Rate stickers, referring to the controversy.
Patrick announced the drive to create a comprehensive 10-year education plan in June.
Since then, he has appointed a leadership council for what he is calling the Commonwealth Readiness Project and more than 150 volunteers to serve on subcommittees to help with the task.
The education task force is expected to present a strategic plan to Patrick in the spring. It will look at costs and present recommendations for implementing the recommended actions to move the state forward on the governor's proposals.
Thursday night's forum was the first public meeting in the process. People from other area communities attended, too.
Patrick used his own life as an example, saying that when he was growing up, he shared a room with his mother, sister and a grandparent, and slept in bunks and on the floor, but while his own daughter had, by the age of 18, lived on three continents and shaken a president's hand.
How does that happen in one genera tion? he asked. Education is how that happens.
Although he voiced support for the MCAS testing system, Patrick said it might be time to look at it more closely.
My point is simply we've had enough experience with MCAS to ask ques tions, he said. Is the test we have the test we need?
Several people in the audience members said they swere pleased with Patrick's ap proach.
I think his heart is in the right place, said Kelly Scola, who has children at tending the Merrymount School.
I thought it was amazing, said William Pavao, a history teacher at Central Middle School. I want to make sure teachers are involved in the process. That needs to happen.

Quincy Place Mall in Ottumwa, IA - March 2017
On March 5th, 2017 I returned to the Quincy Place Mall in Ottumwa, Iowa, for another brief video inside. It's been five years since I last did a video of this mall, and as can be expected these days a lot has changed, and a lot is about to change again. The video begins with a brief look outside, before going inside, starting at the west end of the mall and working my way to Herberger's and back.
Quincy Place Mall first opened in 1990. It is a fairly small L shaped mall accompanied by three anchor stores. Herberger's and JC Penney have been here since the beginning. Walmart occupied the western anchor space until 2003, when its Supercenter was completed on the edge of town. In the 10+ years since then, most of Ottumwa's new retail businesses have been built around the current Walmart, including Menards, Culver's, Hardee's, and Kohl's, to name a few. The older Quincy Plaza shopping area that includes the mall still has a lot of shoppers, though nothing like it once was.
The mall has many vacant stores today, and is on the verge of becoming what many would consider a dead mall. After Walmart's departure in 2003, the west anchor space hasn't seemed to hold a tenant for very long. Split in three segments, the east end of the former Walmart space became Goody's in 2006, with Dollar Tree taking up the middle section. Three years later Goody's filed for bankruptcy and closed the Ottumwa location. In 2013, MC Sports came to the mall where Goody's was, but early this year they announced that they, too, were filing for bankruptcy and liquidating all their stores. Not too long after that, clothing store Vanity announced similar plans, and will also be closing their store in the mall. As if this wasn't enough, JC Penney has just recently announced the closure of 138 stores nationwide this year, which includes the Ottumwa location. JC Penney, along with MC Sports, have blamed rising online shopping and poor holiday sales last year as reasons for the closures. Very sad indeed. Now Quincy Place Mall seems to be being thrown into a downward spiral very quickly, leaving it with just one anchor, for the first time in its history. In addition, a nearby mall, Penn Central Mall in Oskaloosa (see this video: will be losing its JC Penney as well, leaving it with -- NO anchors (sorry Hy-Vee, you don't count lol)
The Quincy Plaza shopping area as a whole is struggling somewhat. Target closed early last year (see this video: and a few months later was followed by K-Mart. Hobby Lobby is supposed to be going into part of the old K-Mart building sometime soon, but there are no plans of anything going into the huge former Target building.
This was the third time I've filmed this mall. Click below to watch my previous videos -

Age of Jackson: Crash Course US History #14
In which John Green teaches you about the presidency of Andrew Jackson So how did a president with astoundingly bad fiscal policies end up on the $20 bill? That's a question we can't answer, but we can tell you how Jackson got to be president, and how he changed the country when he got the job. Jackson's election was more democratic than any previous presidential election. More people were able to vote, and they picked a doozie. Jackson was a well-known war hero, and he was elected over his longtime political enemy, John Quincy Adams. Once Jackson was in office, he did more to expand executive power than any of the previous occupants of the White House. He used armed troops to collect taxes, refused to enforce legislation and supreme court legislation, and hired and fired his staff based on support in elections. He was also the first president to regularly wield the presidential veto as a political tool. Was he a good president? Watch this video and draw your own conclusions. Support CrashCourse on Patreon:

Jackson’s promotion of this cause led to the infamous Trail of Tears:
The Amistad Case | Give us Free
Cinque and his fellow Amistad captives - so called because they were being transported to slavery on the schooner La Amistad when they revolted and took over the ship - were charged with murder and piracy for their actions. In their defense, the captives contended they revolted as free Africans who had been kidnapped and sold into slavery. The trial became a cause celebre for abolitionists and in 1841, the case went to the U.S. Supreme Court, which agreed with the Africans' assertions and ordered them freed. Amistad has been hailed as the first civil rights case to come before the U.S. Supreme Court. It is also the first time that a former president - John Quincy Adams - argued a case before the nation's highest tribunal. Despite its prominence and the Court's surprising ruling, however, the case had little impact in diminishing slavery in the young nation.
