Quinta da Regaleira is a 20th century residence located in Sintra, and if you don't research or know anything about it, this doesn't sound like something extraordinary or worth a visit, but you should really trust us on this one. If beautiful residence architecture and romantic palaces are not really your cup of tea, fear not, for us the true gem is the garden of the residence. A luxurious park of four hectares that features lakes, grottoes, wells, benches, fountains, and a vast array of exquisite constructions.
The Initiation Wells are two wells on the property that better resemble underground towers lined with stairs. These wells never served as water sources. Instead, they were used for ceremonial purposes that included Tarot initiation rites. The tunnels described above connect these wells to one another, in addition to various caves and other monuments located around the park.

PORTUGAL: Quinta da Regaleira - estate in Sintra
Quinta da Regaleira is an estate located near the historic center of Sintra, Portugal. It is classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO within the Cultural Landscape of Sintra.
Along with the other palaces in the area such as the Quinta do Relógio, Pena, Monserrate and Seteais palaces, it is considered one of the principal tourist attractions of Sintra.
The land that is now Quinta da Regaleira had many owners over the years. Finally it was acquired by the Sintra Town Council in 1997. Extensive restoration efforts were promptly initiated throughout the estate. It finally opened to the public in June 1998 and began hosting cultural events. In August of that same year, the Portuguese Ministry of Culture classified the estate as public interest property.
The property consists of a romantic palace and chapel, and a luxurious park that features lakes, grottoes, wells, benches, fountains, and a vast array of exquisite constructions.
The facade of the palace is characterized by exuberantly Gothic pinnacles, gargoyles, capitals, and an impressive octagonal tower.
The chapel is a Roman Catholic Chapel, and stands in front of the palace's main facade. Its architecture is akin to the palace's.
Much of the four hectares of land in the surrounding estate consists of a densely treed park lined with myriad roads and footpaths. The woods are neatly arranged in the lower parts of the estate, but are left wild and disorganized in the upper parts. Decorative, symbolic, and lively structures can be found throughout the park.
The park also contains an extensive and enigmatic system of tunnels, which have multiple entry points that include: grottoes, the chapel, Waterfall Lake, and Leda's Cave, which lies beneath the Regaleira Tower. The Initiation Well connects to other tunnels via a series of underground walkways.
The Initiation Wells are two wells on the property that better resemble underground towers lined with stairs. These wells never served as water sources. Instead, they were used for ceremonial purposes that included Tarot initiation rites. The tunnels described above connect these wells to one another, in addition to various caves and other monuments located around the park.
Of the two wells, the larger one contains a 27-meter spiral staircase with several small landings. The spacing of these landings, combined with the number of steps in the stairs, are linked to Tarot mysticism. The smaller well contains straight stairs that connect a series of ring-shaped floors to one another. This well is also called the 'Unfinished Well'. A structure similar to these wells can be found in the Pozzo di S. Patrizio in Italy.
Bodies of water can be found in several places in the park. Two artificial lakes and several fountains were added later. One of the most interesting and extravagant among them is the Aquarium, built as if it were naturally embedded in a large boulder. It was once considered the most important naturalist property in Regaleira. However, the Aquarium is no longer used and is poorly maintained.

Sintra is known for its many 19th-century Romantic architectural monuments, which has resulted in its classification as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Les heures d'ouvertures sont de 09h30 à 20h00 d'avril à septembre et de 09h30 à 18h00 d'octobre à mars.
Le coût d'entrée est de 8 euros pour les adultes. Cartes de crédit acceptées.
Pour faire une histoire courte, ce palais est situé dans le centre historique de la Ville de Sintra, ville qui est d'ailleurs classée au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO.
Ce palais a été érigé à la fin du XIXe siècle. Il a appartenu d'abord à la Viscondessa da Regaleira puis à António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro. Ce dernier a agrandi cette propriété avec l'aide de l'architecte italien Luigi Manini.
Le domaine s'étend sur 4 hectares. Une carte nous est d'ailleurs remise à l'entrée du site pour nous permettre de nous situer dans cette immensité.
Malgré la possession de cette carte, il était parfois difficile de retrouver les différents éléments inscrits sur celle-ci pour les raisons suivantes: la multitude des sentiers et le manque d'indications sur le site.
C'est d'ailleurs pour ces raisons que vous pouvez utiliser les services ($) d'un guide.
En plus du palais et de la chapelle, le domaine comprend plusieurs lacs, fontaines, puits, tours, portails et grottes.
Les différents éléments architecturaux, finement sculptés, sont dignes d'une main de maître.
Un élément à ne pas manquer lors de votre visite: le puits initiatique. Il s'agit d'une tour inversée de 27 mètres de hauteur qui s'enfonce dans la terre.
Cette tour comporte neuf paliers que l'on descend par un escalier en spirale. Au fond du puits, une rose des vents à huit pointes, faite de marbre, est encastrée dans le sol.
Lorsque l'on atteint le dernier palier, c'est-à-dire, le fond du puits, nous empruntons un réseau souterrain labyrinthique qui nous mène vers l'extérieur, de façon symbolique: la lumière.
A la sortie du réseau souterrain, un passage de pierres permet de traverser un petit bassin d'eau pour ainsi rejoindre le monde extérieur.
Je vous invite à faire une recherche sur le web pour en apprendre davantage sur ce puits symbolique.
Le palais a été le dernier élément de notre visite. Peu de pièces sont accessibles au grand public.
Cependant, les magnifiques éléments architecturaux et les superbes fresques permettent d'évaluer l'ampleur du travail effectué par l'architecte.

Wikipedia: El Palácio da Regaleira es el edificio principal y el nombre más común de la Quinta da Regaleira. También llamado Palácio do Monteiro dos Milhões (Palacio de Monteiro el de los Millones) por el apellido de su primer propietario, António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro. El palacio está situado en pleno Centro Histórico de Sintra y está clasificado como Patrimonio Mundial por la Unesco.

Carvalho Monteiro, ayudado por el arquitecto italiano Luigi Manini, da a la Quinta de cuatro hectáreas el palacio, jardines lujuriantes, lagos, grutas y edificios enigmáticos, lugares que esconden significados relacionados con la alquimia, la masonería, los templarios y la rosacruz. Modela la quinta con construcciones que evocan las arquitecturas románica, gótica, renacentista y manuelina.

La documentación histórica relativa a la Quinta da Regaleira es escasa para los tiempos anteriores a su compra por Carvalho Monteiro. Se sabe que, en 1697, José Leite era el propietario de una vasta propiedad en los alrededores de la villa de Sintra, que hoy integra la Quinta.
Francisco Alberto Guimarães de Castro compró la propiedad (conocida como Quinta da Torre o Quinta do Castro en 1715), en subasta pública, canalizó el agua de la sierra con el fin de alimentar una fuente.
En 1830 pertenece a Manual Bernardo, y toma el nombre que posee actualmente. En 1840, la Quinta da Regaleira es adquirida por la hija de una comerciante de Oporto, Allen, que más tarde recibió el título de baronesa da Regaleira. Data de este período la construcción de una casa de campo, visible en algunas representaciones iconográficas de finales del siglo XIX.
La historia de la Regaleira actual comienza en 1892, ano en el que los barones da Regaleira venden la propiedad al Dr. António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro por veinticinco contos de réis. La mayor parte de la construcción actual de la quinta estaba terminada en 1910.
La quinta fue vendida a Waldemar Jara d'Orey en 1942, quien, sin desvirtuar la concepción original del lugar, realizó pequeñas obras para acoger a su gran familia. Parece evidente que la concepción religiosa del mundo que preside la Regaleira se asienta en el cristianismo, pero en un cristianismo escatológico, relacionado con el fin de los tiempos. Quiere recordarnos la lección de la escatología cósmica, que anuncia el fin del universo y de la humanidad, y al mismo tiempo que nos atengamos a la escatología individual, asentada en la creencia de la supervivencia del alma después de la muerte. Es también un cristianismo gnóstico, apoyado en discursos míticos y en conocimientos sagrados que prometen la salvación de los fieles y el retorno de los espíritus. Es, en fin, un cristianismo imbuido de ideales neotemplarios, asociados al culto del Espíritu Santo, que encontramos en la tradición mítica portuguesa.
La cruz templaria en el fondo del pozo iniciático, la Cruz de la Orden de Cristo en el pavimento de la capilla, así como todas las otras cruces dispuestas en la misma, testimonian la influencia del templarismo en el ideario sincrético de Carvalho Monteiro.

It belonged to the Viscountess of Regaleira, a family of wealthy merchants from Porto, when it was sold in 1892 to Carvalho Monteiro for 25,000 réis. Monteiro was eager to build a bewildering place where he could collect symbols that reflected his interests and ideologies. With the assistance of the Italian architect Luigi Manini, he recreated the 4-hectare estate. In addition to other new features, he added enigmatic buildings that allegedly held symbols related to alchemy, Masonry, the Knights Templar, and the Rosicrucians. The architecture Manini designed evoked Roman, Gothic, Renaissance, and Manueline styles. The construction of the current estate commenced in 1904 and much of it was completed by 1910.

Palace in Sintra Portugal - Quinta da Regaleira
This is a look at the UNESCO World Heritage site in Sintra Portugal known as Quinta da Regaleira. The palace has an intricate underground cave system, several wells, a mansion and a chapel. I do recommend this site to explore while visiting Lisbon Portugal. You can take the train for about 45 minutes to Sintra then walk 15 minutes to this palace. I consider it to be an awesome site.

O Palácio da Regaleira é o edifício principal e o nome mais comum do palácio da Quinta da Regaleira. Também é designado Palácio do Monteiro dos Milhões, denominação esta associada à alcunha do seu primeiro proprietário, António Augusto de Carvalho Monteiro.

Programa AGORA | Episódio 9 - Quinta da Regaleira | RTP2 - 2013
No programa Agora desta semana destacamos: o palácio de sonho do Monteiro dos Milhões e os espantalhos que dançam na Quinta da Regaleira, em Sintra, e, PIMBA! Almada Negreiros invectiva Júlio Dantas, PUMBA! O Manifesto Anti Dantas dito pelo próprio, por José de Almada Negreiros, o português sem mestre, Poeta dOrpheu Futurista e Tudo. A música que Tcheka traz de Cabo Verde e o confronto de duas gerações do teatro português, Joana Bustorff e John Romão.
O programa AGORA é o novo magazine cultural semanal da RTP2 que cobre a atualidade artística em todas as suas vertentes.
O universo literário, ensaístico, artístico e científico, além de produções e eventos nas áreas da banda desenhada e fotografia; as artes cénicas - designadamente teatro, dança, circo e ópera - a arquitetura, design, pintura, museologia e património; bem como a temática infanto-juvenil (espetáculos, edições em livro, disco ou suportes digitais), contam-se entre as matérias a tratar.
Além da atualidade nacional, AGORA dará particular atenção ao universo cultural lusófono dos PALOP, Brasil, Timor-Leste, Macau e comunidades emigrantes portuguesas.
A edição de AGORA está a cargo de João Carlos Barradas e a coordenação é de Cláudia Galhós. A apresentação cabe a Filomena Cautela. O magazine semanal é complementado com um apontamento de agenda diária, de 2ª a 6ª feira às 21h55 com a duração de 5 min.

Sintra is one of the most iconic places in Portugal. Just about 25 km from Lisbon, the village is very picturesque and its cultural landscape classified as World Heritage by UNESCO.
It’s in the middle of this scene that we find Quinta da Regaleira.

Quinta da Regaleira - Mistério e Alquimia [Portugal - Sintra]
Praticamente um sonho nosso, foi conhecer a Quinta da Regaleira, em Sintra (Portugal). Esse lugar misterioso que é cheio de símbolos mágicos e que remonta a experiência que todo mago passa durante sua jornada. Com monumentos greco romanos, maçons, rosa cruz e pagãos a atmosfera da magia percorre durante todo este passeio. Quando fomos, ele custava 8 euros por pessoa e durante o verão existe um projeto de passeio guiado noturno a luz da lua cheia. Maiores dúvidas podem mandar nos comentários.
