The Tasmani flowers we watch are endless, and this video only collects 56 kinds of flowers. Includes Tasmanian endemic flowers.

Yarra Valley - Wine Regions of Australia

Winemaker Peter Dillon tells us about Yarra Valley.

One of Australia’s premier cool climate wine regions, the Yarra Valley encompasses such diverse topography that it can produce premium quality fruit in a range of grape varieties.

With its stunning hills and dales ranged before a backdrop of blue mountains (the lower reaches of the Great Dividing Range that stretches up Australia’s eastern seaboard), elevations vary greatly. Although they are not recognised as sub-regions, there are two distinct zones – the valley floor, with soils of sandy clay loam interspersed with broken sandstone; and the Upper Yarra Valley, which is more elevated and cooler and has areas of bright red volcanic loam.

Flora Fridays: Sycamore fig | Ficus sycomorus

Instructor Mike Anderson teaches us about the Sycamore fig (Scientific name: Ficus sycomorus) in this week's Flora Friday video.

These really huge trees with their wide-spreading crowns are often found near rivers and are easy to identify with their yellow/green colour.

These trees support a huge range of animal life such as many fruit-eating birds, fruit-eating bats and even a large majority of the mammal species, including elephant, giraffe, kudu, nyala, bushbuck, impala, duiker, bushpigs, warthogs, baboons, monkeys and bushbabies.

But the most important creature to benefit from this beautiful tree is the Fig Wasp (hence the name). This is a fascinating relationship, as every fig tree species has a wasp species that only pollinates that tree species. When the figs become ripe, the wasps are attracted to the figs by the chemical 'smell' the figs release. Figs and fig wasps have a unique symbiotic relationship that is essential to their mutual survival, the fig tree provides a home for the wasps and the wasps, in turn, provide the pollen that the fruit needs to ripen.

The figs are commonly eaten raw or dried for later use. In Namibia, fermented fruits are distilled to make an alcoholic drink and in Egypt, the bark is used for timber. The leaves are a valuable food in overstocked, semi-arid areas, where the tree occurs naturally. The latex sap or bark extracts can be drunk for chest complaints, glandular problems, pharyngitis and even diarrhoea. The powder of the bark can be used to sprinkle on burns.

Fruit infusions are drunk for tuberculosis; how to do this? Take two handfuls of bark that has been boiled (in 3 cups of water) once it is boiling inhale the water vapour.

One very common use is using a piece of dry wood as the base block when making fire, (by means of the friction method). The softwood is good for making drums, and a strong rope can be made from the inner bark.

Mysterious Booms in Australia. Olinda, Victoria - March, 2010

The file from my memory stick says 7th of March, 2010. I am posting this after recently seeing similar vids posted from all over the world over the last few years. Only a few sounded like this, though. Video taken in Olinda, Victoria.

NOTE: Apologies for the visual - I was trying to point the camera mics at the sound - it gets a lot better half way through. Turn it Up!

There was a thunderstorm during the afternoon, but after a while it became weirdly apparent that this sound had nothing to do with the weather....continued for AT LEAST an hour...long enough for me to get curious enough to take this footage. I thought maybe there was mine blasting, or pile driving going on somewhere, but the sound seemed to be coming from across the sky from a Southerly direction?!...and so rhythmic, and prolonged.

I have no rational explanation for it, or even if its connected to the other events - so I can only hope enough people post to create some sort of map of times and dates for the future to mull over.

Anyhoo, I seem to have captured the sound quite well. Enjoy, and Ponder.
