Iquitos - Peru - Zoologico de Quistococha - Pink Dolphin

Amazon Zoo Quistacocha
Flew from Lima to Iquitos in the Peruvian Amazon. The city is only accessible by boat or plane, there are no roads into Iquitos as it is in the heart of the Amazon River. While you can take trips and tours into the rainforest to try your luck at seeing the amazing wildlife, like some other places around the globe, this can be extremely hit or miss. The odds of you seeing a Jaguar let alone a number of other fabled critters in the wild are minuscule, thus I'd recommend just going to the Quistacocha zoo. I'm not saying doing going on a trek or tour, but if your goal is to actually see specific animals while you are in the amazon, this is the best place. I'm not saying not to go on tours and excursions, but if you're goal is to see specific animals this place is a guarantee. Entry fee is reasonable and there are a ton of enclosures with all the animals you would want to see in the wild. Beginning of the video is the floating market, it was extremely dirty as you can see but the rest of the city is pleasant and relatively clean, some can be seen toward the end of the video before flying back to JFK.

JAGUAR FIGHT IN THE AMAZON!!
We caught this jaguar face off at Quistacocha Zoo in Iquitos, Peru. The zoo is one of the primary tourist attractions in this hub city to the Peruvian Amazon basin. The living conditions of the animals is a far cry from the freedom their kin experience in the nearby jungle. The humid and rainy conditions led to some modest camera fog ups which are reflected in a few of the images.

Pedro the Jaguar
Pedro is a 7 year old male jaguar that lives at the Pilpintuwasi Butterfly Farm. He was rescued from the illegal pet trade when he was a few months old. The Austrian woman who runs the butterfly farm and sanctuary has raised many animals who have been orphaned, sold in the market, and discarded by their owners because they were too much trouble. She seems to truly care about the welfare of her animals. To her they are pets/family, but still unpredictable wild animals. This jaguar was small for a male, but incredibly healthy. So much better than the poor souls at the Quistacocha Zoo.
