The galleries of the smaller tombs are of a single storied while the larger ones are two storied. In the centre of each tomb is a sarcophagus which overlies the actual burial vault in a crypt below. The domes were originally overlaid with blue and green tiles, of which only a few pieces now remain.

The Qutb Shahi Heritage Park is a unique site with no other necropolis, anywhere in the world, matching the grandeur, diversity and completeness – the latter as mausoleums representing the entire reign of the Qutb Shahi’s stand here. Apart from the tombs the site boasts of several mosques, large baolis or step-wells, garden structures and one standing hamam or bath-house.
The Qutb Shahi Heritage Park feature 75 monuments including 40 mausoleums.
Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah(1581- 1611), the fourth king of the Qutb Shahi dynasty laid the foundation of Hyderabad. During his reign, the dynasty reached the zenith of its material and cultural life.
The majestic tomb built in 1602, is one of the largest tombs at the Qutb Shahi Heritage Park reaching to a total height of 60 m.

Nestled at the foot of the majestic Golconda Fort, the Qutb Shahi Heritage Park is spread over 106 acres. This necropolis of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, that ruled the region for 169 years in the 16th–17th centuries, includes 40 mausoleums, 23 mosques, 6 baolis (step-wells), a hammam (mortuary bath), pavilions and garden structures set within a heritage zone of international significance.
Many of these rival the greatest Mughal structures in scale and represent almost two centuries of funerary architecture. No other ensemble of structures in the Deccani kingdoms of Ahmednagar, Berar, Bidar, Bijapur or Gulbarga includes as many monuments of striking grandeur and complexity reflecting a unique synthesis of architectural styles.
These were built during the reign of the Qutb Shahi Dynasty who ruled the Hyderabad region for 170 years in the 16th – 17th centuries and many of these rival the greatest Mughal structures in scale and represent almost two centuries of funerary architecture.
Conservation works included removal of cement plaster, which were a later addition, and restored using lime plaster which was originally used on the dome, wall surfaces and plinth. The present flooring in the upper chamber will be replaced with granite stone blocks/slabs, maintaining the original levels and slopes. Other missing damaged and decorative plaster work will also be restored.

Telangana IT Minister visits Qutb Shahi tombs - ANI News
Hyderabad, Jan 03 (ANI): Telangana Urban Development and IT Minister KT Rama Rao on Tuesday visited Qutb Shahi tombs at Golkonda. He also attended an event organised by Aga Khan Trust to mark completion of a tomb conservation work. He later appreciated the trust for trying to bring back original glory to seven tombs. He further stated that by taking the help of the Government of India, they all will try to bring world heritage status to the historic place.

They lie in the north of the outer perimeter wall of Golkonda Fort and its Banjara Darwaza (Gate of the Gypsies), amidst the Ibrahim Bagh.
Description
The tombs form a large cluster and stand on a raised platform. The tombs are domed structures built on a square base surrounded by pointed arches, a distinctive style that blends Persian and Indian forms. The tombs are structures with intricately carved stonework and are surrounded by landscaped gardens.
The tombs were once furnished with carpets, chandeliers and velvet canopies on silver poles. Copies of the Quran were kept on pedestals and readers recited verses from the holy book at regular intervals. Golden spires were fitted over the tombs of the sultans to distinguish their tombs from those of other members of the royal family.
History
During the Qutb Shahi period, these tombs were held in great veneration. But after their reign, the tombs were neglected until Sir Salar Jung III ordered their restoration in the early 19th century. A garden was laid out, and a compound wall was built. Once again, the tomb-garden of the Qutb Shahi family became a place of serene beauty. All except the last of the Qutb Shahi sultans lie buried here.
Sultan Quli Qutb Mulk's tomb, the style of which sets the example for the tombs of his descendants, is on an elevated terrace measuring 30 meters in each direction. The tomb chamber proper is octagonal, with each side measuring around 10 meters. The entire structure is crowned by a circular dome. There are three graves in this tomb chamber and twenty-one laid out on the surrounding terrace, all of which lack inscription except for the main tomb. The inscription on Sultan Quli tomb is in three bands, in the Naskh and Tauq scripts. The inscription refers to Sultan Quli as Bade Malik (Great Master) — the endearing term by which all people of the Deccan used for him. The tomb was built in 1543 A.D. by the Sultan, during his lifetime, as was the custom.
Near the tomb of Sultan Quli is that of his son, Jamsheed, the second in the line of Qutb Shahi sultans. Built in 1550 A.D., this is the only Qutb Shahi tomb which has not been fashioned from shining black basalt. Its appearance, too, is quite unlike the other tombs in the garden — it rises gracefully in two stories, unlike the squat tombs of the other kings. Jamsheed Quli Qutb Shah's is the only tomb of a Qutb Shahi ruler without any inscriptions; of course, Jamshed's son, Subhan's tomb also does not have any inscriptions. Subhan Quli Qutb Shah ruled for a short time. Subhan's tomb stands midway between the tombs of his father and grandfather. He was popularly called Chhote Malik (Small Master).
Sultan Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah's tomb, built in 1580, after his death, is slightly larger than Sultan Quli's tomb. Traces of the enameled tiles, which once adorned this mausoleum, can still be seen on the southern wall. The tomb has two graves in the main chamber and 16 on the terrace; some of them probably are those of his six sons and three daughters. There are inscriptions in the Thuluth script on all faces of the sarcophagus. The three famous calligraphists — Isphalan, Ismail and Taqiuddin Muhammad Salih — who left a store of Naskh, Thuluth and Nastaliq inscriptions on the many Qutb Shahi edifices in the city, were contemporaries of Ibrahim Shah.
Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah's mausoleum is considered the grandest of the Qutb Shahi tombs. Built in 1602 A.D., the tomb is on a terrace of 65m square and 4m high. A flight of steps leads to the mausoleum proper, which is 22 m square on the outside and 11 m square on the inside. There are entrances on the southern and eastern sides. The tomb is in a vault below the terrace. Inscriptions in Persian and the Naskh scripts decorate it.
Another grand mausoleum is that of the sixth sultan, Muhammad Qutb Shah. The facade of this tomb was once decorated with enameled tiles; only traces are now evident. There are six graves and inscriptions in Thuluth and Naskh.

Qutb Shahi Tomb is located near Golkunda fort in Hyderabad. This is a huge burial ground containing the tombs of seven important rulers of Hyderabad, including Md Kuli Qutb Shah, Md Abdulla Qutb Shah, Hyat Bakshi Begum etc. All these tombs are built by the Shahi rulers of Hyderabad during sixteenth century. There is also a beautiful Mosque inside the Qutb Shahi Tombs complex. All these structures show beautiful sculpture and architecture. We spent half day in Qutb Shahi tombs which was not enough. It needs a lot of walking from one tomb to another. You may need one full day to visit the place comfortably.

Qutb Shahi Tombs: Heritage Restoration by Ratish Nanda, CEO, Aga Khan Trust for Culture
Heritage restoration is often a topic of heartbreak in Hyderabad. However, if there has been any visible change on that front, it is at the Qutb Shahi tombs, the royal necropolis where the Golconda kings and founders of Hyderabad were laid to rest. The ongoing work in the complex has been a much-needed respite from the usual apathy that Hyderabadis witness with regard to the city’s heritage.
Undertaken by the Telangana department of Archaeology and Museums and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) some years ago, the work at the Qutb Shahi tombs has brought about visible (and much needed) change and stability to the heritage monuments, some of which were in a precarious situation. Using archival imagines and artisans who were specifically brought to Hyderabad for this work, the structures have been revived by expert conservation architects. So how did they undertake this monumental task?
To understand that, and to throw light on the extensive work that has been taken up, we bring to you talk by the very person in charge of it all – Ratish Nanda, the CEO of the AKTC. Nanda, who has been with the AKTC for two decades, is also the man behind the restoration of (Mughal emperor) Babur’s tomb in Afghanistan. The AKTC has also taken up other major restoration works in the country like the Humayun’s tomb and the Sunder nursery in New Delhi.
