RAF Defford
Royal Air Force Defford or more simply RAF Defford is a former Royal Air Force station located 1.1 miles (1.8 km) north west of Defford, Worcestershire, England.
The airfield site is now owned and used by the West Mercia Constabulary and many of the golf balls and other communications equipment have been removed. Some of the station buildings remain in other uses. A few are contained within the National Trust property of Croome, including part of the station’s medical facilities which now house the RAF Defford museum.

My first visit to this local event near Pershore, really looking forward to the next one. The glorious weather and a huge collection of classic cars on display was an added bonus.

Halifax V9977 Memorial Unveiling 9 June 2019
The unveiling of the memorial to the eleven victims of the crash of Halifax bomber V9977 on 7 June 1942.
The memorial is situated on the River Wye walk near the village of Goodrich in Herefordshire a few hundred meters from the crash site.
The eleven who died in the crash were: Royal Air Force
Douglas John Davies Berrington (115095)
Algernon Michael Phillips (44185)
Bernard Charles Edward Bicknell (1271272)
Brian Douglas George Dear (571852)
Gavin Millar (751019)
Ronald John Sansom (33372)
Clifford Edward Vincent (110285)Alan Dower Blumlein, (EMI)
Frank Blythen, (EMI)
Cecil Oswald Browne, (EMI)
Geoffrey Spencer Hensby, (TRU)
Halifax V9977 had taken off from RAF Defford on a blazing hot day, 7 June 1942 to test the then highly secret and still experimental H2S radar system, which eventually would come to be called 'blind-bombing' radar as it produced a map of the ground. It was by far the most accurate bombing system of WW2, and the loss of almost the entire research & development team in one accident was nothing short of a disaster, according to Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
The project was completed only through extreme hardship under the brilliant leadership of Bernard (later Sir) Lovell.
Among those who died on 7 June 1942 was Alan Dower Blumlein, possibly the greatest British genius of the 20th Century, but whose name, because of the sensitivity of the project he was working on when killed, was shrouded in secrecy for decades. Blumlein was earlier responsible for the invention of stereo sound and television.
I am incredibly proud to have been in the company of so many good friends & my family at the unveiling this weekend on the Wye Valley at Goodrich of a memorial to the eleven men who died in the crash of Halifax V9977 on 7 June 1942, among them was Alan Dower Blumlein about whomI wrote my first book 20 years ago (ISBN-13: 978-0240516288 Publ., 1999 … ) The memorial stone will now provide a timeless talking point for the many thousands of walkers who pass this way & who will never forget the ultimate sacrifice these brave men madeso that we may all be free. They truly were heroes, all of them & at the unveiling today were Simon & David Blumlein, sons of Alan Dower Blumlein & many Blumlein family members, & Mike Philips, son of co-pilot Algernon Philips & his family & many many more who made today possible.

Haunted Airfield RAF Lissett April 2015
Jonathan went to the remains of RAF Lissett, in the East Riding of Yorkshire - situated 6 miles south of Bridlington
From RAF Lissett we get the tale of the “Reaper’s Bomber, a phantom Halifax that would be seen around dawn circling the airfield by the early ground crew. It was interpreted as a bad sign by the superstitious crews for the impending raid that night.
It is still said that the sounds of the engines running of the four engined Halifaxes can be heard on the old airfield at dusk
Thanks for watching

Lancaster Bomber Fly Past - Croome Court 14 September 2013
We had never been to see an air show or fly past before and so having heard about this event (and it being so local), my wife, younger daughter and I went along to Croome Court to see what all the fuss was about. Wow. What a brilliant experience. I took my camera to take some photos, an while I was doing that (and my wife was snapping on her iphone) my daughter filmed part of the flypast using my wife's little Canon Ixus point and shoot pocket camera. We are so glad she did. This gives you a little taste of one of the fly pasts that the Lancaster crew treated us to.
Many thanks to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight ( and the National Trust who run Croome Court ( for enabling this to happen. I think the Defford Airfield Heritage Group also had some involvement.( A big thanks also to the young cadets who acted as marshals in the car park and around the site. I am sure there are probably others I should be acknowledging - including the spectators, many of who were old hands and who kindly gave us lots of background information and advised on camera shutter speeds etc.
Anyhow - this is a very short clip with titles added and one of my photos taken with a Nikon D7000 with a 55-200mm kit lens and one of Jackie's (my wife) shot on her Iphone 4 using the Hipstamatic app. The filming (including panning as the Lancaster flew over head) was done by my nine year old daughter, Poppy. I think she did a brilliant job!
Worcestershire war memorabilia hoard fetches £80,000 BBC News
A militaria and aviation fanatic who amassed barns full of war memorabilia has sold his hoard for more than £80,000.
John Hancocks, 85, who lives near Worcester, said his fascination began as a child in Birmingham when the city was targeted by German bombers during World War Two.
His passion grew during his National Service as an RAF crash salvager based at Cosford in Shropshire.
Mr Hancocks, who also served at RAF bases in Padgate, near Manchester, Colerne in Wiltshire, and Little Rissington in the Cotswolds, is selling up so he and he and his wife Pat, 83, can downsize.

Saab JAS 39 Gripen
The Saab JAS 39 Gripen is a single-engine, canard-delta-wing multi-role fighter, produced by the Swedish Saab AB (originally Svenska Aeroplan AB). It is the Swedish manufacturer’s candidate in the HX Fighter Program, aiming to replace the capabilities of the Finnish Air Force Hornets.
The development of the Gripen (“Griffin”) began already in the late 1970’s as the Swedish Air Force sought a successor for their outdating Saab J35 Draken and Saab J37 Viggen fighters. Saab responded by designing a new multi-role fighter – the name JAS is an abbreviation for Jakt(air-to-air)-, Attack(air-to-ground)- and Spaningsplan (reconnaissance plane). The aircraft flew its maiden flight in 1988, and it was introduced into operative use by the Swedish Air Force officially in 1997.
There are several versions of the Gripen available. The oldest version is JAS 39A, and its two-seat version JAS 39B. The newer C/D -versions were introduced in the 2000’s. In 2016 Saab unveiled the newest, Next Generation Gripen E/F -version.
In addition to Sweden, the Gripen is operated by the air forces of Czech Republic, Hungary, South Africa and Thailand. Also British Empire Test Pilots’ School operates the aircraft to train their pilots in Linköping, Sweden. The Brazilian Air Force has also placed an order for 36 next-generation Gripen E/F -fighters, the aircraft are to be delivered between 2019 – 2024.
The Finnish Air Force first flew aircraft of the Swedish manufacturer in 1958, as Saab 91D Safir trainers were ordered for the basic pilot training of the Air Force. In 1970, the parliament decided to order Saab J35 Drakens to serve alongside the Soviet MiG-21’s. The Finnish Air Force also had two war-time Saab 17A bombers for a short period of time (1959 – 1961), which were used for towing shooting targets. The Gripen, then still in development, was also a candidate in the previous Fighter program in the turn of the 1980’s and 1990’s, to replace the MiG’s and Drakens – however, at that time the American Mc-Donnell-Douglas F/A-18 Hornet was chosen.

The Kaivopuisto Air Show is a huge, aviation-themed event, organized by the Finnish Aviation Museum. The Show will be held on Friday Night, June 9th 2017. Various aircraft types representing the past, present and future of Finnish Aviation will take part in the Show. The Show will take place in the air, land and sea.
The Kaivopuisto Air Show is organized by the Finnish Aviation Museum. The Finnish Aviation Museum is a national specialized museum of aviation, and one of six aviation-themed museums in Finland.
Kaivopuisto has a long tradition as a venue of popular Air Shows. Many Air Shows and other aviation-themed public events were held in the area, especially during the early years of Finnish Independence, to promote the Art of Flying for the public. The last large-scale Air Show of several participants was held in 1955, but many individual aerobatic groups, both from Finland and abroad, have performed in the area since.
The Air Shows of the early 1950’s featured frontline fighters of the Finnish Air Force – Messerschmitts and Vampires – fearless wing walkers and other performers.

The Auster 80th Anniversary Fly-In
Held at AAC Middle Wallop in Hampshire over the weekend of 7-8th April 2018. It had been hoped to have had nearly 80 of the type visit over the two days but weather up to the date and over the weekend hampered numbers somewhat. As it was also the 80th Anniversary of the airfield itself, the Army Historic Flight and a few ex AAC Helicopters joined us too.
