A Morning Walk

英王立園芸協会　ウィズリーガーデンを歩いてみる　RHS GARDEN WISLEY, SURREY, ENGLAND　【英国ぶら歩き】

ウィズリーは英国の王立園芸協会が所有する４つのガーデンでも最古のものです。もともとは世界各国から集めた植物や果物が英国の気候や土壌で育つかどうかを試験する場所として小規模で始まりましたが時代と共に拡張され、今では東京ドーム21個分の敷地面積を誇る大ガーデンとなりました。

入口を入って左手すぐにある100ｍ少々のまっすぐに伸びた「ミックスボーダー」では世界中から集められた花々を楽しみながら歩くことができます。

入場料は大人一人15ポンド程度（2018年）と決して安くありませんが植物に囲まれて歩く数時間はとても上質で豊かです。敷地内には立派なガーデンセンターやショップ、カフェ等もあります。でもお弁当持参で来ている方も多いようで、あちらこちらでピクニックをしています。負担でなければお弁当を持っていかれることをお勧めしたいです。敷地内はとても整備されているので、よほど大雨が降って下が緩くなっていない限り赤ちゃん用のバギーや車いすの方でもほとんど問題なく散策できます。

ロンドン中心部からでも車で1時間くらいととても近くにあるのですが、残念ながら交通公共機関だとかなり苦労します。

【鉄道】
鉄道だと最寄駅はWest Byfleet (4 miles) か Woking (7 miles)だそうです。ここからはタクシーです。ただし.West Byflee駅では出待ちのタクシーはいないそうなのでウーバーかミニキャブを利用します。
【バス】
Kingston駅からGuildford行きの715番のバスがWisleyを経由します。月曜から土曜は1時間に1本。日祝日は1時間半に1本だそうです。
【車】
ロンドンからA3をポーツマスに向かって走り、M25を超えたら最初のジャンクションで降りたらラウンドアバウトをぐるり180度まわってA3のロンドン方面に合流するように走ります。合流する寸前でRHSウィズリーの看板があるのでそれを左折すればそこが駐車場入り口につながります。

I love my job: Lucie, team leader at RHS Garden Wisley

Before she became a gardener Lucie Tait trained as a costume designer and worked on a number of high profile TV shows including Foyle's War, at the English National Opera and designing wedding dresses. She is now looks after 20 acres herbaceous planting at RHS flagship garden Wisley and has a team of six working under her.
