Battling the storm: The story of the rescue of the Hindlea by Moelfre Lifeboat
On 27 October 1959, an incredible rescue was undertaken by RNLI Moelfre Lifeboat in Anglesey. Braving hurricane-force winds, a makeshift crew of volunteers, including one shore helper who had never been out on a lifeboat before, successfully rescued those onboard the ship Hindlea before it was smashed on the rocks.
For their heroic service, legendary Coxswain Richard ‘Dic’ Evans was awarded the first of his two RNLI Gold Medals, a Silver Medal to Mechanic Evan Owens and Bronze Medals to Donald Francis, Hugh Owen and Hugh Jones, on his first shout.

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, lifeboat crews around the UK and Ireland are ready to launch to help those in need. Whether you're stuck on a sinking ship, cut off by a rapidly rising tide, or in the water and close to drowning, RNLI crew members will drop everything to come to your rescue. 95% of RNLI lifeboat crews and station staff are volunteers.
But it’s not just lifeboats. RNLI lifeguards patrol 248 beaches across the UK and Channel Islands, keeping people safe, providing safety advice and rescuing those in trouble. Education volunteers visit schools and swimming clubs to help teach the next generation how to enjoy the water safely. And volunteer fundraisers and shop workers give up their time to generate vital funds. The RNLI is also working to help communities around the world that are most at risk of drowning.
If you spot someone in trouble in the water, call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.

Moelfre Lifeboat launching 15th May 2016
While visiting the Lifeboat Station at Moelfre, Anglesey and learning of the past bravery of it's crew and the historical figure of Coxswain Richard Evans who was awarded two Gold Medals for outstanding bravery, we were fortunate enough to witness the Lifeboat being launched. Fortunately, the shout was for a yacht with a fouled propellor off the coast of Angelsey, which was towed to safety by this crew before it drifted onto any rocks.
North and South beaches at Moelfre Inc RNLI Lifeboat Station at Moelfre on Anglesey
Video of the two beaches at Moelfre on the Isle of Anglesey. The Anglesey Coastal Path runs between these two beaches and in the middle you have the Moelfre Lifeboat Station.
After the new Lifeboat station on the way towards the village, you will pass an old small stone building with a slipway in front of it, this is the original lifeboat station.
Moelfre is a beautiful coastal village on Anglesey which is steeped in Maritime history.
A section of the Anglesey Coastal Path travels through Moelfre, the coastal path heading north passes by two famous shipwrecks, the Royal Charter and the HIndlea. The Royal Charter sank in a ferocious storm in 1859, often referred to as the Royal Charter storm.

Moelfre is a village, community and electoral ward on the north east coast of Isle of Anglesey in Wales, and on the Anglesey Coastal Path. It has a population of 1,064 as of the 2011 UK census. The meaning of the Welsh language word Moelfre translated in English is 'bald or barren hill', which describes the land behind the village, as seen from the sea. It is the same name as that of the Malvern Hills in Worcestershire and Herefordshire. The village today has 502 households and 5% unemployment. The Royal Mail postcode begins LL72.
The village of Moelfre is 5 minutes from the A5025. The nearest mainline railway stations are in Bangor and Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. These can be reached in under half an hour on the bus services which run through the village.
It was the site of the wreck in 1859 of the steam clipper The Royal Charter near the end of its voyage from Australia to Liverpool. On July 30th, 1862, the screw sloop Enrica, soon to be commissioned as the Confederate States of America warship CSS Alabama sheltered in Moelfre Bay while evading both British customs authorities and the USS Tuscarora, which had been sent to capture or sink her. There were no street lights in the village until well after the Second World War. Moelfre RNLI Lifeboat Station has a distinguished history, including the Hindlea rescue in 1959, when all the crew were rescued. There has been a lifeboat in Moelfre since 1854.
This area is by the large sandy beach Traeth Lligwy and the ancient stone homestead of Din Lligwy. Nearby Ynys Moelfre is a haven for birds, and seals and porpoises may also be seen. In the village there is a bakery, restaurants and a fish and chip shop, and the RNLI Gwylfan Moelfre Seawatch Centre has a small museum, shop and book store. The RNLI Lifeboat Station is open to the public.
Actress Jennifer Ellison was rescued by the RNLI in August 2013. off Moelfre.

Walks in Sussex: Exploring Shoreham's Lifeboat Station
I am out on Shoreham Beach exploring the lifeboat station and its Tamar class lifeboat, a state of the art self-righting boat.
The RNLI has been operating for more than 150 years in Shoreham. With the exception of a five-year period from 1924 to 1929, there has been an all-weather boat operational at Shoreham ever since. But the lifeboat station on Kingston Beach was built in 1933 to house an eight-tonne lifeboat and the Tyne-class lifeboat which arrived on station in 1990 weighed 28-tonnes causing the slipway at the boathouse to sink and collapse.

Lifeboat crew rescue woman stranded at sea on car
A crew of Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) volunteers performed a dramatic rescue of a woman stranded at sea on the roof of her car on beach in Cumbria in northern England.
The woman had been caught off guard by the incoming tide, and when the rescuers reached her she was kneeling on the roof of the car, which had been completely submerged in water on the beach near the village of Beckfoot.
The woman was treated for mild hypothermia on board the lifeboat and was later given the all-clear by paramedics.

St.Davids Lifeboat, South Wales returns and is hauled up the ramp.
I was fortunate to be there with video camera to hand, as the RNLI Lifeboat based at St.Davids in Pembrokeshire, South Wales arrived back to harbour from a training trip out at sea. The boat demonstrates its remarkable manoeuvering ability as it turns right round within its own length at the bottom of the launch ramp. The boat is then hoisted up the ramp, ready for any emergency call out. The radio mast is lowered as the boat ascends the ramp.
The lifeboat station is in the harbour of the tiny settlement of St.Justinian, a short distance from the beautiful, tiny city of St.Davids. The large island to be seen in the background is Ramsey Island, almost entirely a RSPB bird sanctuary. Videoed on 9th May, 2017.

The Tamar class is the result of several years of research and development by the RNLI to produce the next generation of slipway-launched lifeboat. It is virtually unsinkable and if it capsizes in the stormy seas around the British Isles, it will right itself within a few seconds. The lifeboat includes the computerised Systems and Information Management System (SIMS) that enables crew to control many of the lifeboat's functions remotely from the safety of their seats. Other features include advanced ergonomics that reduce the impact on the crew as the lifeboat crashes through waves, and a powered Y-class boat stored behind a transom door to allow immediate deployment. The Y-boat is accessed by lifting a section of the rear deck, then launched and recovered on to a ramp provided by the lowered transom door.
The kit contains all the required parts to build the model:
Two glassfibre mouldings: the hull and the deck
Prop-shafts, propellers, brass rudders; a bow-thruster tube
Cnc-cut and printed styrene for the construction of the cabin with detailed interior
A set of fittings and stanchions manufactured from high grade cast alloy
Three large frets of etched brass components including detailed window frames, instrumentation, interior detail etc.
Pre-formed mast arches from brass tube
Vac-formed styrene radar, bow fender, liferaft boxes, liferings, filler bays and hose reel
A vac-formed styrene kit for the Y-class boat with Lettering and Numbers
Self-adhesive Lifeboats lettering and RNLI flags
Over 70 construction drawings and main plans
The Y-boat compartment under the rear deck is an optional fitment with a choice of building the deck door as a one-piece removable unit or with folding sections. The transom door can be represented by a score in the GRP or drawn in with a permanent marker pen. The more experienced model maker will no doubt wish to build a working transom door however no details are given in the kit. We have ensured that the steering gear is below the Y-boat deck level should the modeller wish to house the Y-boat below decks.
Not supplied in the kit: The hull & cabin roof numbers and lettering for any Tamar in the fleet (available from Maritime Models, maritime-models.co.uk). Paints, adhesives and tools will be required to complete.

Man rescued by RNLI crew was five seconds away from drowning - Daily Mail
The Tower RNLI crew spotted the man struggling in the water of the River Thames in the early hours of Thursday morning and dashed to his rescue. They launched and saved the life of the 36-year-old man, who had been pulled downstream by the fast-moving tide towards Blackfriars bridge. After pulling him from the river to safety just after 5am, lifeboat crews classed the rescue as a 'life saved', saying he was just 'five seconds away from drowning'.
