Palace Hotel (Broken Hill) Murals painted by Gordon Waye
Gordon Waye was a renowned Aboriginal Mural Artist, born in South Australia who became part of The Stolen Generations in 1950 aged 5 years. Gordon grew up in Colebrook Home, Eden Hills, South Australia and spent his early years in Colebrook Home and later in a Salvation Army Boys' Home in Mt Barker. He was put through Art School by the Salvation Army who saw his talent. At a very early age when he would create artworks in the sandpit at Colebrook Home.
Gordon has painted numerous murals throughout South Australia and New South Wales but sadly a number have disappeared as places have been demolished or redeveloped. Thankfully his artwork at the Palace Hotel in Broken Hill still remains and the movie Priscilla, Queen of the Desert makes that likely to continue as tourists visit the iconic hotel to see the murals and visit the hotel made famous when the movie was released.
Gordon died in 2009, aged 65 years and is buried in Port Augusta, South Australia Gordon passed away January 17th 2009, aged 65 years, and is buried in Pt Augusta, South Australia. I have used the song Took The Children Away written and sung by Archie Roach who also became one of the Stolen Generations at a young age as I feel it the most appropriate song for Gordon's work
