Fairburn Ings in Summer
For our second birdwatching trip on Sunday 31st July 2016 we visited Fairburn Ings, a wetland nature reserve in Castleford, West Yorkshire. I have never seen so many herons before - they were everywhere!
My particular favourite bird of the day was the kestrel sat on the fence post. Usually we see kestrels diving and hovering about so it was interesting to see one sat stationary for a while.
The whining you can occasionally hear in the background is our dog Diesel. He likes to be on the move and gets a bit restless if we stay in one place too long. He's a good lad really!

Fairburn Ings in Winter
On the chilly winter morning of Sunday 29th January 2017 we paid our second visit to Fairburn Ings, armed with our trusty camcorder. It was a fresh, sunny day in spite of the cold, and the birds were singing as though spring was just around the corner.
We came across some new specimens (Teal, Pintail, Goosander) as well as some old familiar favourites (Heron, Little Egret, Shelduck). Unfortunately we forgot to pack a notebook in order to write the full list down!
I hope you find some enjoyment in our videos. Please don't forget to share, like and subscribe as there will always be more to come!

Yorkshire Steam 2015 Part Three - A Jubilee & Deltic on the same day! - Saturday 3rd October 2015
#Galatea #Alycidon #Yorkshire
Saturday 3rd October was a spare day in Yorkshire for us as we are flying away with Rebecca's parents on holiday on Sunday and checking the schedules I noticed three tours were scheduled, two steam and one Deltic hauled so a morning chase was planned! So we dutifully set an early morning alarm to be at South Elmsall station at 8:10am ready for the start of the steam leg of the WCRC tour from Cleethorpes to Carlisle via Doncaster, Normanton and Skipton then over the Settle and Carlisle. Black 5 no.45231 'The Sherwood Forester' had moved to Doncaster the day before to take over the tour there and we had seen her at the station as we arrived on the Friday and could see the smoke as we went through town on the way over in the morning. Real Time Trains had noted a departure however there were no further updates and as time went by I suspected it had run a different way and eventually after an hour of waiting we had confirmation it was already in Leeds. So it was onto next phase of the chase, breakfast at Wetherspoons at Xscape followed by Fairburn and the view from the A1246 road bridge looking over Fairburn Ings RSPB Nature Reserve ready for the WCRC tour 'The Lune Rivers Trust' running Carnforth-Skipton-Castleford-York and return with Jubilee no.45699 'Galatea' in charge which is seen running below us. Finally for the morning it was over to Woodlesford for Deltic no.D9009 'Alycidon' hauling a UK Railtours tour 'The Magnificent Settle and Carlisle' London Kings Cross-Doncaster-Woodlesford-Settle-Carlisle-Hexham-York-Doncaster-London Kings Cross. 'Alycidon' took over the tour from/to Doncaster and is seen working through the station.
For the evening it was a quick trip out to Doncaster station to see 'Alycidon' arrive in at platform 1 and leave the stock behind in the station ready for a Class 90 to take the tour back to London.

Bills Into Hills – Ecotalk supports RSPB in momentous land purchase
Bills Into Hills - Ecotalk Partnership with RSPB
Hear from Simon Pickering at Ecotricity and Jan Elsworth at RSPB about RSPB's recent land purchase at Fairburn Ings, where Ecotalk customers bill money has contributed to a purchase of part of RSPB's Fairburn Ings reserve, near Castleford, securing land for some of the UK’s rarest wildlife.
The Coal Tips, once the largest colliery spoil heap in Europe covering an area of 105ha, is today home to a fabulous array of rare habitats and wildlife including bitterns, otters, cuckoos, roe deer, brown hares and an abundance of butterflies and bees.
Ecotalk by Ecotricity
The world’s first green energy company, Ecotricity was founded by former traveller Dale Vince in 1995. The company fights on the three frontiers of energy, transport and food – our biggest sources of climate change emissions in Britain.
Ecotricity not only supplies 100% green, animal-free electricity and frack-free green gas, they use their customers’ bills to build new sources of green energy in Britain. So Ecotricity customers don’t just get green energy in their home or workplace, they get a green outcome too.
Ecotalk is Ecotricity’s new mobile phone service – we use the money we make from customer bills to buy land to give back to nature. To learn more about Ecotalk, visit ecotalk.co.uk/
