Fen Drayton Lakes and River Great Ouse Walk, Cambridgeshire Walks In England, UK
Fen Drayton Lakes and River Great Ouse Walk, Cambridgeshire Walks In England, UK
Fen Drayton Lakes and River Great Ouse Walk was about 6.5 miles in distance. The terrain of the route was a combination of field, lakeside and riverside paths; some tracks; plus some short road sections. The walking was easy on level ground. Route finding was easy with obvious paths, good waymarking and good landmarks. Some of the paths can be were a little muddy or waterlogged after rain or in winter. There were no stiles to negotiate.

Lakes and river walk - Part 7
Fen Drayton RSPB reserve that also encompasses parts of the Great Ouse and the Cambridge to St Ives guided busway.
It's part vlog and part general interest. This part of Cambridgeshire is just on the edge of the Cambridgeshire Fens. On the Swavesey side of the A14 the landscape is quite flat but on the Boxworth & Elsworth side the landscape is distinctly hilly. I guess this variation is what makes the UK's landscape so fascinating to explore. Hope you enjoy watching (& listening to my inane ramblings) feel free to rate, comment and subscribe if you want.
Swavesey our beautiful village
Swavesey is such a beautiful village, set in the Cambridgeshire countryside next to the RSPB reserve at Fen Drayton. Today while testing some new camera filters I took the drone out for a flight and the resultant video was so good I thought i would post it.

Fen Drayton Branch Trip
All aboard 31135 as she hauls a class 312 unit down the branch line to Fen Drayton!
Filmed on September 14th 1991.
The Cambridgeshire Busway in Field and Fen
A video of parts of the northern section of the Cambridgeshire Busway from Longstanton to Drayton Lakes showing the varied country including flooding around the busway at Drayton Lakes, November 2012. Accompanying music played on mountain dulcimer by Nigel Pennick.
Tawny or Short-eared Owls?
Managed to film some owls this afternoon but ashamed to admit I'm really not sure if these are Tawny or Short-eared Owls. My old bird field-guide is a bit rubbish since all the illustrations are from watercolours. Ok - they sort of resemble some British wildlife but photos would have been much better. Time to get a new book.
Anyway, these owls were sweeping over one particular field near FD reserve/Guided Busway which the farmer had left fallow after allowing cattle to graze on it back in the summer months. Since then it's now scrubby grass which is perfect owl territory. I observed two pairs of these owls plus what I think is a Buzzard that briefly mobbed one of them before flying away.
Also featured in the video are Lapwings, a pheasant and the glorious A14 (Obviously I'm being a bit sarcastic about the A14...)
Let me know what these birds are as my bird spotting skills are a bit rusty.
Please comment, rate, subscribe or communicate through the usual channels.
Thanks for watching.
Green Woodpecker looking out for predators
Few months ago we spotted a Green Woodpecker resting on the road and refusing to fly even when approached in the car. Since these are very secretive birds I first assumed it was injured but then heard the sound of a Buzzard calling out as it was gliding overhead. In fact on that day there were at least three pairs of Buzzards and a pair of Marsh Harriers hunting for food. The woodpecker finally flew up into the tree but continued to look upwards. First time I've been able to film a Woodpecker. Maybe I'll get lucky again and get some longer footage.
