Puffins at Fowelsheugh Bird Reserve in Scotland
Fowlsheugh is a coastal nature reserve in Kincardineshire, northeast Scotland, known for its seventy metre high cliff formations and habitat supporting prolific seabird nesting colonies. Designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in the United Kingdom, the property is owned by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. Fowlsheugh can be accessed by a public clifftop trail, or by boats which usually emanate from the nearby harbour at the town of Stonehaven. Tens of thousands of pelagic birds return to the site every spring to breed, after wintering at sea or in more southern climates, principal species being Puffins, Razorbills, Kittiwakes, Fulmars and Guillemots.
Due to global warming, the planktonic species previously present that prefer cold water are not available in the quantity required to support the historically large sandeel population. Added to the problem has been overfishing of the Scottish sandeel, further reducing the numbers of this dietary staple for Puffins and other local seabirds

The Essence of Place at RSPB Scotland Loch Lomond
Susannah Ramsay has been our artist in residence at RSPB Scotland Loch Lomond this year, as part of her PhD research for the University of Stirling, and Glasgow School of Art. She’s produced a film poem about the reserve called the Essence of Place. It’s her final piece of work, for her second year, and presents the landscape and wildlife of Loch Lomond through the changing seasons. This is a sneak preview, but the work itself can be seen as part of a special event at the reserve, on Saturday, October 21, when visitors can enjoy a unique, candlelit walk through the woods, followed by an open-air viewing of the film. You can find more info, and book here:
RSPB release six kites in Aberdeenshire

SIX rare red kites were released into the North-east skies today. The birds needed some reassurance when the doors of their Aberdeenshire pens were first opened up by their carers. But one-by-one the birds soon soared off into the wilderness.

Fowlsheugh Seabird Colony • Crawton
