Great Spotted Woodpeckers RSPB The Lodge Sandy July 2011Whenever you visit The Lodge Bird Reserve at Sandy, RSPB's headquarters you stand a great chance of seeing Green Woodpeckers or Great Spotted Woodpeckers, I have been lucky to accumulate a fair amount of footage of them on the different feeders both down at Meadow Hide and up at the Gate House, but this one I find a fun bit of footage. It isn't the clearest, lots of people nattering away in the hide but it's the birds themselves that make this. Both Dad and one of the Juveniles together on a lazy warm sunny day in July.... it just feels right to have this bit of footage captured up on the channel :)

Red Legged Partridge at RSPB The Lodge SandySunday was a horrid wet day up at the RSPB The Lodge Reserve in Sandy, when we got there at 7:30 in the morning it was just starting to rain... and the ground was still quite dry, but when we left a few hours later it was waterlogged everywhere.... It meant that the Hide was quiet, in fact we didn't have anyone pop in for over 3 and a half hours. It did though allow us to catch this early bird wondering around the front of the Hide, a Red Legged Partridge which was lovely to see :)
I have seen Red Legged Partridges out and about but to be able to see this one up closer along with it's dramatic entrance was good fun :)

Pheasants at the Meadow Hide RSPB The Lodge Reserve SandyWhenever you pop up to the Meadow Hide at RSPB Sandy, you are likely to come across this pair of pheasants, always fun to watch they do have ways of providing entertainment.
As you will see they have a unique way of getting seed out of the feeders if there isn't any spilled seed left on the ground.

I zoomed in quickly and managed to capture a bit of movement from a Blue Tit that was busy building a nest in the box :)

Common Darter Dragonfly RSPB The Lodge Garden August 2011We popped up to Sandy on the way back from Deadman's hill, and the dragonflies were around, there were some brown hawkers on Sandy Ridge, and a couple of Emperor Dragonflies on the pond at the back of the lodge, Mike spotted this one having a bit of a sun bathe... so I grabbed some footage before he took off...
I believe it's a common darter :)

Today I am in Sandy in Bedfordshire at the RSPB Headquarters in search of The Lodge. I am with Simon and Sharon Brown. Crossbills at RSPB The lodge reserve, Sandy, Bedfordshire March 2012When we arrived at the RSPB the lodge reserve in Sandy we were told by a couple of people passing by that Crossbills were showing quite well down at the Meadow hide, apparently they were visiting the pond furthest away and occasionally the feeders. Usually when we have gone along before they have been quickly appearing and only those with the powerful lenses were able to get a picture, but this time as you can see the birds popped to the pond in front of the hide.
They were there for only a few seconds but we managed to get some Crossbill footage, and what lovely birds they are, sorry about the noise and the door slam that shook everything, an over enthusiastic young boy crashed through the hide door :)
