RSPB: Canvey West Marsh (3rd April, 2017)
Took a trip a while back to a new(ish) nature reserve on Canvey Island. Not a great deal seems to have settles there just yet, but it looks promising. Great to see the early uptakers - especially the Little Egrets who seem to be breeding very well.

Locating Canvey's V2 Bomb Crater by Drone
Filmed January 2018, the BTP boys set out to find the forgotten site of a V2 rocket bomb crash which struck Canvey Island, Essex on the 30th of December 1944. It launched from German-occupied Holland and landed on Canvey marshes in two parts after breaking up in the air. The crash sites were first identified by local hands-on archaeologist Gary Foulger in 1994. The engine and turbopump of the bomb were found around six football fields away from the crater, suggesting the warhead which exploded and formed the crater had come away from the main bomb body. The crater's explosion blew the soil up from the centre first with the marshland below likely absorbing much of the blast, creating the central dimple visible today. Fragments of metal were found in the adjacent seawall. Gary's excavated remnants of the bomb are now displayed in the Dutch Cottage museum, but the site has received little attention since. The land is now part of RSPB West Canvey Marshes.

St Margaret's Church Bowers Gifford Bowers Marsh RSPB Essex England In 4K
Church of St Margaret of Antioch, Bowers Gifford There has probably been a church on the grounds since Saxon times and the original would have been made of wood.
A stone church was built by Sir John Giffard in the early fourteenth century and traces of this building still remain in the South wall (circa 1320) and West doorway. The church was a gift of the Lords of the manor, the Giffards, who eventually gave their name to the small village of Bowers Gifford. Sir John fought in the battle Crecy and there is an incomplete brass of him in full armour in the Sanctuary.
The church is built mainly of Kentish ragstone with a tower and wooden spire which was added in Tudor times. In the bell tower, which is reached by twenty five steeply winding steps, three bells are housed, all of which are original fourteenth century. The bells are amongst the oldest in the County and are still rung regularly. There is also a fifteenth century Piscina (free standing basin for washing sacred vessels) and a sixteenth century wooden Font cover. The glorious East window made by (Lavers, Barraud, Westlake) won a Gold Medal at the Paris Exhibition of 1870 and was installed at the church in 1871.
