£250 vs £250,000 Watch | Watchfinder & Co.
Watchfinder & Co. presents:
What is a watch? It’s a timekeeping device, primarily. Perhaps this statement is obvious to you, perhaps you think it’s something that doesn’t need clarifying—but yet when a watch can cost £250 or a quarter of a million, the obvious no longer seems quite so obvious. How can two watches that both quite simply tell the time have such a disparity in their prices?

9. Egypt’s Most Influential Pharaoh
Last year, in 2017, National Geographic reported that archaeologists from Egypt and Germany had discovered a huge eight-metre statue submerged in ground water in Cairo. The statue at first was believed to depict Pharaoh Ramses II, who ruled Egypt over 3,000 years ago and was one of the country’s most powerful leaders.
8. Elite Tombs in Luxor
The discovery of two ancient tombs in the southern city of Luxor surprised the world and brought new buzz to Egypt in 2017. Located in the the Draa Abul Naga necropolis, this area is famous for its temples and burial grounds. It is close to the Valley of the Kings where many of ancient Egypt's pharaohs were buried.
7. A Nubian King
In 2008, the remains of a mysterious 2,600-year-old statue were discovered in a temple at Dangeil, along the Nile River in Sudan.
However, archeologists found only parts of the statue, which meant they could not identify who it was until years later. The temple where the remains were found are believed to have once been dedicated to the Egyptian Amun.
6. The Ankhesenpepi Pyramid
Archaeologists have discovered the first evidence of a long-lost satellite pyramid for the ancient Egyptian Queen Ankhesenpepi II. She was considered the most important Egyptian queen of the 6th Dynasty around 2,350 BC. She and her sister Ankhesenpepi I were both married to Pharaoh Pepi I. While the names might seem like a huge coincidence, it is most likely that they both took on the same name when they married.
5. Remains of a Musician
In Timna, Israel, archaeologists discovered the mysterious remains of a pregnant woman from 3,200 years ago. This biblical-era site supposedly never had any female visitors and during the time of her the place was controlled by Egypt. This discovery last year challenged the historical understanding of experts.
4. The Statue of Ptah
In 2014, archaeologists discovered a pit full of ancient goodies! Among them, a statue of the Egyptian Ptah, alongside a beautiful carved cat, a sphinx, and a Baboon.
Ptah was the of craftsmen and sculptors and was worshipped in a temple at Karnak.
3. Tutankhamen’s Camping Bed
When famous archaeologist Howard Carter discovered King Tut’s tomb in 1922, he also discovered some furniture in his treasury. While this might not sound that exciting compared to everything that was found, it definitely deserves its own mention.
2. A Hidden Chamber
After years of analysis and exploration, researchers believed they had uncovered every secret hidden inside the pyramid of Giza, however in 2017 a new chamber was revealed! This 4500-year-old monument and wonder of the world has much more to share. Researchers used muon detectors, the by-product of cosmic rays to reveal the unidentified chamber.
1. The Two Brothers
In 1907, the findings of two mystery mummies left researchers perplexed for decades, but now, thanks to DNA sequencing, scientist have finally solved the mystery!! The pair’s burial site was discovered in, a village 250 miles south of Cairo. They were found by Egyptian workmen directed

Skeleton exhibition reveals London's ongoing burial problems

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Jelena Bekvalac, Research Osteologist at the Museum of London
We found all of these skeletons - we actually have 17, 000 at the moment at the Museum of London, but there were lots more and a lot of them and therefore been reburied. And we have that because of the urban nature of London so the development over the years is over the last 2000 years and then predominately in the last thirty years or so there's been building within the city limits of London has then revealed to us different burial grounds or areas that people have been buried in that we may no longer have known about or had records and that's how we now have this amazing collection of skeletons.
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Jelena Bekvalac, Research Osteologist at the Museum of London (video shows skeleton)
This is a female skeleton and she was found at the site of the Royal Mint where they built the building to make the coins and she's got a lovely green skull and green teeth from the copper. So when they made the coins, they threw away the copper waste and that's what turned her green. She's from the medieval period and the rest of her skeleton there is you can see is normal bone colour.

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Jelena Bekvalac, Research Osteologist at the Museum of London (video shows skeleton)
This is the skeleton of a child aged about eleven years old and as you can see from the skull, there's an awful lot of destruction but this destruction is from a disease and also along one side here and down onto the leg bones. This child unfortunately suffered from congenital syphilis and so that meant that the mother had venereal syphilis and it was passed from mother to child.

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Jelena Bekvalac, Research Osteologist at the Museum of London
We know that in that particular time period which we call post medieval that it was of low socio economic status and so we can then see different diseases which would have affected them and we see an increase in infectious diseases like tuberculosis and syphilis and also deficiency diseases of their diets so particularly rickets and that would usually indicate to us that they came from a poorer background and not such a good environment to live in.

The legislation that came in to protect the disturbance of remains in the 1850's was for a specific reason and it created the problem we've got now of graveyards and cemeteries being full and cemeteries being unsustainable therefore we have to move forward to re-using graves if we're to continue to provide burial provision in the cemeteries of the outer areas of London.

I loved doing this sketch, though unfortunately the background music last only for the first few minutes of the video - I had some pretty serious computer issues that, to cut a long story short, meant I couldn't complete the film. I thought I may as well salvage something from my efforts and upload it anyway.
For what it's worth, the sketch is of a Swiss village called Luins, in the Canton of Vaud, near Geneva. It's a beautiful village with lovely old buildings nestled among the vineyards. All materials are listed in the subtitles that appear throughout the film.

SUMMARY
=======
The Khan Shaykhun chemical attack took place on 4 April 2017 on the town of Khan Shaykhun in the Idlib Governorate of Syria. The town was reported to have been struck by an airstrike by government forces followed by massive civilian chemical poisoning. The release of a toxic gas, which included sarin, or a similar substance, killed at least 89 people and injured more than 541, according to the opposition Idlib Health Directorate. The attack was the deadliest use of chemical weapons in the Syrian civil war since the Ghouta chemical attack in 2013.The OPCW-UN Joint Investigative Mechanism, indicated the responsibility of the Syrian regime for the attack. The OPCW-UN JIM described marker chemicals that linked the sarin used to the Syrian government: “The samples from Khan Shaykhun contain the three types of marker chemicals described above: PF6 [HFP], isopropyl phosphates and isopropyl phosphorofluoridates. Their presence is a strong indicator that the sarin disseminated in Khan Shaykhun was produced from DF from the Syrian Arab Republic stockpile.” The governments of the United States, United Kingdom, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, France, and Israel, as well as Human Rights Watch attributed the attack to the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
The Syrian government said the attack was a fabrication. The Russian government claimed that the incident was staged. On 7 April, the United States launched 59 cruise missiles at Shayrat Air Base, which U.S. intelligence claimed was the source of the attack.
METRO PICTURES - Bad Conscience, Organized by John Miller
Cara Benedetto, Caleb Considine, Jane Dickson, Dan Graham, Nic Guagnini, Lyle
Ashton Harris, Takuji Kogo & Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries, Leigh Ledare,
Frank Lutz, Marilyn Minter, Wangechi Mutu, Greg Parma Smith, Walter
Robinson, Aura Rosenberg, Matthew Watson
Metro Pictures presents Bad Conscience, an exhibition organized by artist and
writer John Miller that features a multigenerational group of artists with whom
Miller has collaborated in the past or maintains regular dialogue. The paintings,
photographs and moving images included in the exhibition elicit a disquieting
effect that Miller attributes to a troubled process of representation. Works in
Bad Conscience range from highly nuanced images of the banal, like in
Marilyn Minter's paintings of paper curls and spilled coffee on a linoleum floor,
to more explicit works about vice and depravity, such as Jane Dickson's painting
of a strip club in 1981 Times Square.
Where Dickson's work relates to sexuality from a sociological perspective, Leigh
Ledare's photographs derive from personal psychology. In Clementine Ledare
asked children to draw over a lascivious image of his naked mother lying on a
bed and in another he invited women from an online ad, which is exhibited
along with the image, to photograph him, turning himself into a sexualized
object. Aura Rosenberg's Little Hans refers to a case study of Sigmund Freud's
and connects to Dickson's and Ledare's works as it ascribes guilt to sexuality.
Little Hans was a five-year-old boy phobic of horses and obsessed with
masturbation. In this work Rosenberg uses a drawing of a giraffe the boy's father
made. Freud explains in his essay that once the father finished the drawing the
boy insisted he add the animal's penis, which is suggested by a crude line
beneath its midsection.
The realist paintings of Caleb Considine, Greg Parma Smith and Matt Watson,
former students of Miller, all share a sense of degradation and evident self-
consciousness in technique. Considine exhibits No-Shank, a painting of a hand
holding a flexible pen, an object given to prisoners so they cannot stab guards
and other inmates. Parma Smith's meticulous paintings of a Swiss Army Knife
and colored pencils manipulate the generic and iconic significance of the image
for a decidedly outré effect while Matthew Watson's hyperrealist portraits of his
former professors Nic Guagnini and Kara Walker, which were made under the
condition they trade one of their own works, raises questions about obligation
and responsibility between the commissioner and commissioned.
Cara Benedetto's animated PowerPoint presentation Teaser introduces a man
and a woman and tracks their courtship from a classified ad to a romantic
weekend. Using generic snapshots and a theatrical soundtrack, Teaser is a kind
of movie trailer that obliquely chronicles the couple's brief relationship. The
melodramatic music, enigmatic narrative and unusual diction of the captions
make Benedetto's animation strikingly unnerving.
Takuji Kogo & Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries exhibit two Flash animations
comprising only of captions in English and Japanese and melancholic MIDI
soundtracks. Statement 0029: To My Good and Loyal Subjects is the Japanese
Emperor Hirohito's address of surrender following the atomic bombings on
Hiroshima and Nagasaki and in Statement 0063: After Recent Surgery On My
Scalp we hear Michael Jackson's statement following accusations that he was a
repeat child molester.
John Miller's forthcoming book Educational Complex examines Mike Kelley's
eponymous work and will be published as part of Afterall's One Work series in
2015. Two anthologies of Miller's essays have been published by JRP|Ringier: The
Ruin of Exchange and The Price Club.

Grenoble
Grenoble (/ɡrəˈnoʊbəl/;French pronunciation: [ɡʁə.nɔbl]; Franco-Provençal: Grenoblo) is a city in southeastern France, at the foot of the French Alps where the river Drac joins the Isère. Located in the Rhône-Alpes region, Grenoble is the capital of the department of Isère. The proximity of the mountains, as well as its size, has led to the city being known in France as the Capital of the Alps.
Grenoble's history goes back more than 2,000 years, at a time when it was a small Gallic village. While it gained in stature by becoming the capital of the Dauphiné in the 11th century, Grenoble remained for most of its history a modest parliamentary and garrison city on the borders of the kingdom of France.

He travelled extensively across Europe, especially in Italy, where he lived for seven years in the cities of Venice, Ravenna and Pisa. During his stay in Italy he frequently visited his friend and fellow poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Later in life Byron joined the Greek War of Independence fighting the Ottoman Empire, for which Greeks revere him as a national hero. He died in 1824 at the age of 36 from a fever contracted in Missolonghi.
Often described as the most flamboyant and notorious of the major Romantics, Byron was both celebrated and castigated in his life for his aristocratic excesses, which included huge debts, numerous love affairs with both men and women, as well as rumours of a scandalous liaison with his half-sister. One of his lovers, Lady Caroline Lamb, summed him up in the famous phrase mad, bad, and dangerous to know. His only legitimate child, Ada Lovelace, is regarded as the first computer programmer based on her notes for Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine. Byron's illegitimate children include Allegra Byron, who died in childhood, and possibly Elizabeth Medora Leigh.
Public Notice 3: From Vivekananda to Kallat
Join Dr. Madhuvanti Ghose, the first Alsdorf associate curator of Indian, Southeast Asian, Himalayan, and Islamic art at the Art Institute of Chicago, as she unpacks the process of working with contemporary Indian artist Jitish Kallat on his project Public Notice 3.
In 2010, the Art Institute of Chicago opened a site-specific installation connecting two key historical moments—Swami Vivekananda's landmark speech delivered at the first World Parliament of Religions, held in Chicago on September 11, 1893, and the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon 108 years later. The resulting work, Public Notice 3, created a trenchant commentary on questions of religion in the 20th and 21st centuries.
With Public Notice 3, Kallat converted Vivekananda's text to LED displays in the colors of the Department of Homeland Security's alert system, on each of the 118 risers of the historic Woman's Board Grand Staircase of the Art Institute of Chicago, adjacent to the site of Vivekananda's original address.
Launched on September 11, 2010 and installed for one year, Public Notice 3 explored the possibility of revisiting the historical speech as a site of contemplation, symbolically refracting it with threat codes devised by a government in response to a terror infected era of religious factionalism and fanaticism.
