Medina of Rabat Morocco the old Town of Rabat

The Medina quarter is the old town of Rabat and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012. The quiet atmosphere of the medina contrasts with the lively souks of the tourist towns. Avenue Hassan II divides the New Town from the Medina and serves as a link between two completely opposite worlds. In the medina, there is a distinctly Mediterranean atmosphere with whitewashed walls and blue shutters. It is accessed through the two gates of Bab El Alou and Bab El Had to the east, along the 12th-century Almohad city walls built by Sultan Yacoub el Mansour. The Alhambra city wall is 5,263 meters long and stretches along the west and south coasts of Rabat. The wall and the gates were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the west, the medina is surrounded by the walls of the Kasbah Oudaias. This medina was created by the Moriscos (Andalusians, who were expelled from Spain in the 18th century by Philip III) and is rarely well preserved due to the countless fortification walls. It has a traditional and authentic atmosphere, and you can visit the traditional souks, the Kasbah of the Oudaias, the former Jewish Mellah district, the Makki Mosque, etc.
The Medina is a center for trade and crafts, it holds many Moroccan craft shops and also serves as a residential area for residents from less prosperous backgrounds. It is a historical landmark of Rabat.

Sayaf Hossini Plays & Sings In Rabat, Morocco!
Av. Mohammed V, Rabat, Morocco, May 2017
Sayaf Hossini is a self-taught guitarist & singer. He told me he travels around the country to play and sing for many of his fans!
In an extraordinarily quite holy day, I met Sayaf singing in this avenue for an appreciative small audience.
Ordinarily the avenue is one of the busiest in Rabat, with hundreds of thousands pederstrians and, almost, as many cars and motorists.
It is more than two miiles long, and I have never seen it so quite ever. Filmed during a holy day.
Left part of The House Of Parliament kan be gleened in the background with the Central Facade shown ca. min 8:50.
Both the central railway station, the National Bank, The Central Post Office and many financial & political institutions, as well as hotels & department stores are situated in the Avenue and nearby..

Inside the Medina of Rabat Morocco
My biggest culture shock traveling to Morocco was spending time in the medinas, which are the old, medieval streets filled with souks (North African markets). We spent many hours each day wandering through the stalls, looking at the wares and literally getting lost in the explosions of color, sound, smells, texture and energy. The souks consist of tiny little shops, sometimes as small as just a counter that sell fresh produce, meat, clothing, toiletries, cleaning supplies, bread, gyros, olives, touristy trinkets, rugs, fabric, lamps, ceramics and more! Stepping into a Moroccan medina is like taking a time capsule into the Middle Ages where you’re lost in winding streets fighting for road space with people, carts, donkeys and now mopeds. Canvas tarps, laundry, intricate lamps, and construction scaffolding crisscross overhead as we weaved our way through the stalls. The alleys are ridiculously narrow, and I could easily imagine Aladdin leaping across the rooftops escaping the Palace guards.

EXPLORING MOROCCO | CHELLA ANCIENT RUINS - Most Popular Tourist Attraction in Rabat,Morocco
Coming in at number 1 on our list of our top things to see in Morocco is the Chellah Ruins which is located in Rabat. This complex has been settled over and over again through out the centuries. Civilation had fallen, the place had been renamed, conquered, renamed and conquered again. This site is on our top because we are fond of stambling around taking pictures. If you are more of the night life set, this place might not be your piece of cake. But it is a site we absolutely adore.
Rabat morocco souika (old city)
Rabat was founded in the 12th century by the Almohad ruler Abd al-Mu'min as a military town. The city steadily grew but went into an extended period of decline following the collapse of the Almohads. In the 17th century Rabat became a haven for Barbary pirates. The French established a protectorate over Morocco in 1912 and made Rabat its administrative center. Morocco achieved independence in 1955 and Rabat became its capital.
Rabat, Temara, and Salé form a conurbation of over 1.8 million people. Silt-related problems have diminished Rabat's role as a port; however, Rabat, and Salé still maintain important textile, food processing and construction industries. In addition, tourism and the presence of all foreign embassies in Morocco serve to make Rabat one of the most important cities in the country. The Moroccan capital was ranked at second place by CNN in its Top Travel Destinations of 2013.[7] It is one of four Imperial cities of Morocco, and the medina of Rabat is listed as a World Heritage Site. Rabat is accessible by train through the ONCF system and by plane through the nearby Rabat–Salé Airport.

Travel Video #2 || Morocco - Rabat
We had the most amazing time travelling round Morocco back in April! We went to Casablanca, Rabat, Fes, The Blue City and Tangier, so we will be uploading a bit of a series for you, with a video for each place we visited ☺
We found watching other people’s YouTube videos about Morocco super helpful when planning our trip, so we hope that ours can inspire you to visit Morocco! We flew into Casablanca and explored the area for just one day, but this was enough to see all the sights. Looking back, we probably wouldn’t have bothered going out of our way to visit Casablanca, but as we flew into the Casablanca airport, we thought we’d take the time to look around anyway and we had a fab time.
Thank you for watching our first ever travel vlog, do keep an eye out for the next ones and let us know what you think in the comments, we’d love to do this more often! If you’d like to get in contact with us, then please follow us and message us through our socials below:
