RABATI CASTLE AKHALTSIKHE - WHAT IS IT LIKE? IS IT WORTH VISITING? GEORGIA
What is the Rabati Castle Akhaltsikhe like? Is it worth visiting?
I paid a visit to the Rabati Castle, a nicely maintained and very attractive castle that boasts stunning views of Akhaltsikhe. So much so that I went twice, once in the morning and then again for sunset. Enjoy!

Rabati Castle (Georgian: რაბათის ციხე), is a medieval castle complex in Akhaltsikhe, Georgia. Built in the 13th century, initially was called the Lomisa castle until it was conquered by Ottomans.
According to The Georgian Chronicles the city was established in the 9th century by Guaram Mampal, son of the King of Tao. From the 13th to the end of 14th centuries it was the capital city of Samtskhe-Saatabago, ruled by the Georgian princely (mtavari) family and a ruling dynasty of the Principality of Samtskhe, the House of Jaqeli.
In 1393 the city was attacked by the armies of Tamerlane. Despite the Turko-Mongol invasions fortress withstood and continued to thrive. After the Treaty of Constantinople in 1590, the whole territory of Samtskhe-Saatabago went under the rule of Ottoman Empire. Turks Mostly used to build defensive edifices. In 1752 first mosque was built in Rabati. In the first half of the 8th century Prince Vakhushti of Kartli writes By the end of the 18th century Metropolitan John writes that despite the fact that a large part of the population has been Islamized, there's still functioning Orthodox church. After the Treaty of Georgievsk between the Kingdom of Kartli and Russian Empire was signed the question of the fate of Akhaltsikhe arose. The first attempt to take the fortress in 1810 fell. Russians took the city after 18 years in 1828. After the Treaty of Adrianople in 1829, the Ottomans yielded the part of Akhaltiske Region.

Rabati Castle - Akhaltsikhe, Georgia
How to visit Rabati castle in Akhaltsikhe, Georgia.
Dating back to the 9th century and with a very colourful history, this castle stands out as one of the greatest historical buildings in Georgia. It has been tastefully renovated and improved recently so it is possible to access the walls, towers and internal buildings.
The views of the surrounding area are spectacular.
It is free to enter and walk around the bottom section of the castle and for only 6 Lari - $ US 2.11 you can gain access to the upper section with its impressive mosque, museum and citadel.
As Mandy was suffering from stomach issues picked up in Borjomi, she sat out the tour and left me to explore the castle in full.
If you have time in Georgia and are planning to visit the ancient cave city of Vardzia, then Akhaltsikhe is a great small town to base yourself. There are transport links to Borjomi and Tbilisi. The castle has rich history of various eras and most of the old structures in there are renovated. We hired a service of a professional and experienced guide which I strongly recommend as it is quite educational and informative to know about the synagogue, church, mosque and madrasas and plenty of other structures located in the premise.
We went to the top of the fortress tower after ascending through a series of steps made of stones and finally a spiral staircase made of wooden planks with iron railings that further require 3 or 4 levels of climbing that provides the amazing 360 degree view of the Akhaltsikhe town.
There is a historical museum too in the castle that is a must visit while you are there at an extra cost of GEL 2/- each, that showcases various intriguing artefacts.

Akhaltsikhe Georgia
The capital and biggest town of Samtskhe-Javakheti, Akhaltsikhe means ‘New Castle’ in Georgian. The Rabati castle dominating the town from the north side of the Potskhovi River hasn't been new since the 12th century but it was lavishly restored a few years ago, helping to turn a town that was previously a sad case of post-Soviet decline into a reasonably attractive stop and jumping-off point for Vardzia.

Magnificent Night View on the Top of 'RABATI CASTLE' in Akhaltsikhe,Georgia. ???????????????????????????? #rabaticastle???????? #A_Jewel_In_The_Crown
The President of Georgia described the restored Rabati Castle as a “crown of restoration in Georgia”. Built in the 13th century, Rabati castledeveloped under the influence of different cultures over subsequent centuries and this is reflected in its architecture. Within the 7 hectares castle complex there is a Church, a Mosque, a Minaret and a Synagogue.
In the 13th-16th centuries the castle and its town of Akhaltsikhe had been the residence of the Jakhely princes. During the following two centuries it was part of the Ottoman Empire and in 19th-20th centuries it became part of the Russian Empire.
In the Soviet period the closure of the border with Turkey isolated the town and resulted in the decline of its importance. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the changed geopolitical situation has given a new stimulus to the development of the town.
The restoration of the castle was undertaken over 15 months and its completion marked by a special concert in 2012 by the world famous French singer 'Charles Aznavour', whose father was born in Akhaltsikhe.
???????? Georgia Road Trip Part 2- Rabati Castle in Akhaltsikhe (Ahıska)
After spending the night in Atskuri, we headed back to main town of Akhaltsikhe to explore and find something to eat. We directly went to the Rabati Castle before the tourist flocks flooded in. After the tour of the castle, we found a very small local bread makers selling lavash style of breads. With much difficulty in communication, we were able to buy a few. Along with some cheese and Georgian fruit soda, we had a great breakfast right at the edge of the castle.
Photos and details of the whole trip will be available here (currently under construction):

Rabati Castle in Akhaltsikhe
A wander around Akhaltsikhe's rabati (old town), with its multicultural architecture, is well worthwhile. This district is on a hill on the north side of the Potskhovi, just west of the bridge. Rare examples of darbazebi (traditional Georgian houses) cluster around the castle, which was built in the 12th century and houses a mosque from 1752 and the ruins of a medrese (Islamic school). The rabati also has a synagogue, an Armenian church and a Catholic church.

Rabati Fortress, Akhaltsikhe
Built in the 13th century, Rabati castle developed under the influence of different cultures over subsequent centuries and this is reflected in its architecture. Within the 7 hectares castle complex there is a Church, a Mosque, a Minaret and a Synagogue.
Rabati Castle is a medieval structure in Akhaltsikhe, Georgia, which dates back to the 13th century. Originally, the fortress was called the Lomisa Castle until it was conquered by the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans ruled the land for centuries until Russia took it due to the Treaty of Adrianople in 1829.
A renovated Rabati Castle was opened in Akhaltsikhe in August 2012. Restoration and reconstruction works on Rabati began in May 2011 and covered a space of seven hectares. Old, nearly destroyed buildings were restored by architects and engineers, using archive materials and images. A mosque, a minaret, a synagogue, a Christian church, the Jakelis’ Palace, a museum and a citadel are the restored antique buildings, which can be seen at the renovation site.
