THE PRIORY: UNRAVELLING THE NEVILLE LINEAGE
QUEST 23: RABY CASLTLE
On our latest quest we travelled all the way to the north of England, Teesdale, County Durham and over the border to Scotland.
On previous quests, for those of you following and joining the dots, we have hinted to the relevance of the Neville family and here Alek explains in more detail on the bloodline and his connection to it. The bloodline travelled from the Celtic Lands to Raby Castle, before the castle was sold to the Barnard family, which Alek aptly explains.
We were not able to film inside the castle but did manage some good photographs which will be appearing on our webpage soon. It was a drizzly yet warm day when we visited the castle; the splendour of it is still for all to see with many tales of knights, battles and family entanglements coming down through time to today. The castle grounds and gardens are beautiful with many walks and a vast deer park.
Please feel free to contact us if you are curious to find out much more about our quests; on an England; on a history you thought you knew....

Visiting Raby Castle, The Deer Park and Gardens. (part 1)
Raby Castle is not only one of the finest medieval castles in Britain, it is infamous for being the place where the ‘Rising of the North’ was masterminded. Here, one night, an astonishing 700 knights met in the baronial hall to plot a way to oust the current queen.
The Nevill family who built the castle in the 14th century were right at the centre of the plot to overthrow the protestant Queen Elizabeth l and to place on the throne instead Mary Queen of Scots, a Catholic.
The attempt, which took place in 1569, failed and the Nevills lost everything, including their magnificent castle. By 1626 the estate and castle had been bought by the Vanes, Earls of Darlington and Dukes of Cleveland, and it remains their family home today, nearly 400 years on.
Castle building
Castles evolved a great deal over the 500 years or so of the Medieval period, but their main purpose was almost always to provide defence against attack and as a residence. Early styles had simple stone keeps before mounded earthworks. These evolved into the concentric castles that provided good protection on all sides.
In the later stages of castle building, a much more ornate style - Gothic was introduced. By the end of the Middle Ages castles could be remarkably luxurious.
The Barons Hall is where it is reputed that 700 knights gathered to plot a rebellion against Elizabeth I, a splendid Victorian octagonal drawing room that has re-emerged as one of the most striking interiors from the 19th century and in contrast the mediaeval kitchen which was used until 1954.
The deer park
Raby Castle’s historic interior has certainly seen some bold changes. In the 1700s the main hall was enlarged so that carriages could drive right into it. The 80-hectare deer park that surrounds it is little changed, with some of the present 200 red deer and smaller fallow deer descended from herds who roamed here many hundreds of years ago.
Red deer are native to Britain, as are roe deer, but fallow deer were introduced by the Normans. Sika, Muntjac and Chinese water deer only arrived in the last 100 years, mostly as escapees from deer parks.
I hope you enjoy the walk as much as i did, it was such a beautiful day :) Hopefully you will also enjoy seeing the gardens in part 2.

Darlington is a large market town in County Durham, in North East England, and part of the Tees Valley. Darlington lies on the River Skerne, a tributary of the River Tees.
Darlington owes much of its development to the influence of local Quaker families in the Georgian and Victorian era, and who provided much of the finance and vision in creating the Stockton and Darlington Railway, the world's first steam locomotive powered, permanent passenger railway. The town of Darlington is often colloquially referred to as 'Darlo'.
Darlington is located in south Durham close to the River Tees which acts as the border between Durham and Yorkshire. Both the River Tees and River Skerne pass through the town, the River Skerne later joining the River Tees which then flows through Teesside and into the North Sea. Darlington railway station lies on the East Coast Main Line. There are also local services from the historic North Road railway station and associated Darlington Railway Centre and Museum. Neighbouring towns include Newton Aycliffe, Stockton and Bishop Auckland.
There are several suburbs of Darlington. In the north are Harrowgate Hill, Harrowgate Village, Coatham Mundeville and Beaumont Hill and to the north-east are Whinfield and Haughton Le Skerne. To the east is the suburb of Eastbourne and Red Hall with Firthmoor and Skerne Park to the south. Situated in the west end are Hummersknott, Mowden and Blackwell. Finally, to the north-west are Branksome, Cockerton, Faverdale, The Denes, West Park, High Grange and Pierremont.

Auckland Castle
Historic Auckland Castle, home of the Prince Bishops of Durham for almost 900 years. Located in a beautiful rural setting on the outskirts of Bishop Auckland with the medieval parkland still surrounding it. The weather was cloudy and overcast as is common here in the UK, but was good enough to capture footage with the Phantom 3.

Auckland Castle or Bishop's Castle in County Durham
Auckland Castle, also known as Auckland Palace and locally as the Bishop's Castle or Bishop's Palace, is located in Bishop Auckland, its neighbouring town in County Durham, England.
Owned by the Church of England for the prince-bishopric of Durham[2] for more than 800 years, Auckland Castle was originally established as a hunting lodge.[3] The principal seat of the Bishops of Durham from 1832, it was transferred in July 2012 to the Auckland Castle Trust, a charitable foundation to restore both the castle and grounds and also establish permanent exhibitions on the history of Christianity in Britain and the North East.[4]
