RACCOON MOUNTAIN CAVERNS CHATTANOOGA TN
Kindle Book Amazon, Greater Than a Tourist – Chattanooga Tennessee USA: 50 Travel Tips from a Local:
Raccoon Mountain Caverns outside of Chattanooga TN is a must see. During the late 1920’s, local farmers would come by the exposed limestone rocks at the bottom of Raccoon Mountain known as Mount Aetna. They would sit on hot afternoons as they enjoyed the cool air which would blow from the cracks in the limestone rocks. In late 1929, they invited Leo Lambert, the famous caver who discovered Ruby Falls the year before, to explore the area for a cave. After crawling through a small opening he found this beautiful cave. He opened it as a tourist attraction and spent the next several years working on trails around the Crystal Palace Room. Named the cave “Tennessee Caverns” and it opened to the public on June 28, 1931. The original tour now known as the Lambert Tour circled the Crystal Palace Room which was believed to be the largest room in the cave until Some twenty years after its opening, the Smith Brothers managing the cave discovered a small hole just off the Crystal Palace Room. It is said that it was so tight that they had to exhale so they could squeeze through the tiny opening. About twenty feet later, they found the passage opening into a larger room and continued their discoveries. Eventually they were able to enlarge the tour to include these newly discovered areas. Today, this tour is known as The Crystal Palace Tour. To date, 5 1/2 miles of passageways have been found and mapped over, with new discoveries still being made. Over the years, the name of the cave was changed from Tennessee Caverns to Crystal City Caves to Crystal Caverns and eventually to its current name, Raccoon Mountain Caverns in the late 1970’s. Today, they are home to not only a spectacular cave, but a beautiful campground, featuring full service RV sites, water and electric sites, primitive tent sites, and cabins.
GEOLOGY Raccoon Mountain Caverns is located in a band of limestone from the Monteagle Formation, which formed during the Mississippian Period (approximately 320-360 million years ago), on the bottom of an ancient sea. In this sea, fragments and shells of various marine animals sank to the bottom and became compacted over time to form limestone rock. We have fossils of crinoids, coral, bryozoans, and echinoderms throughout our cave. Although fossils in the limestone tell us the age of the rock they are not much help in determining the age of the cave. Most caves including ours are less than ten million years old. By the end of the Permian Period about 225 million years ago, tremendous mountain building forces resulting from the collision of the continents forced the seas to retreat and pushed and folded layers of older rocks high above the level of the sea. This produced the anticlines (rocks folded into an arch) and synclines (rocks folded into a “u” shape) which are now the Appalachian Mountains. Raccoon Mountain caverns is at the edge of the Sequatchie Valley which is one of the largest and most spectacular anticlinal valleys in the world. Limestone caves are formed when acids attack and dissolve the calcite contained within limestone. This acid is usually carbonic acid (also known as soda water or carbonated water) which is formed when carbon dioxide combines with water. Most carbon dioxide comes from decaying leaves and vegetation in the soil. Scientists believe that most caves form below the water table by slowly moving water. After a rain, the rainwater mixes with the carbon dioxide in the soil and dissolves the limestone underneath.
Two factors control the formation of cave passageways: vertical and horizontal fractures in the limestone, and the water table. A cave is formed by water moving slowly in the small fractures below the water table. The rate of flow below the fractures changes as some limestone is easier to dissolve than others due to variations in composition. (This is evident at Headache Rock which is viewed along the Crystal Palace Tour.) Some channels grow larger as they take in more water and, as a result, they grow faster. #raccoonmountaintn #raccoonmountaincaverns #raccoonmountaincampground

RV Vacations - Our Trip to Raccoon Mountain Caverns & Campground
Music:
After a recent visit to Alabama, one of the first RV vacations we took, we made a quick trip up to Chattanooga, TN. We had heard a lot of great things about Ruby Falls, Rock City & Lookout Mountain, so we decided to go. We reserved 2-days at Raccoon Mountain Caverns & Campground so that we could spend a full-day visiting Ruby Falls, Rock City & Lookout Mountain.
We hadn't realized until we checked in to the RV park that there was actually a cavern on-site. This worked out great for us and gave us something to do that first afternoon at the campground. After we settled in to our site, we walked over to the cavern and took the Crystal Palace Walking Tour. The tour lasted just under an hour and our tour guide was great. There were only 5 of us on the tour, which made the tour that much better!
We learned that in 1929 Leo Lambert, who had discovered Ruby Falls, was invited to explore the area to see if he could find a cave. During his exploration, he discovered the area that is now known as the Crystal Palace Room. It was opened to the public for tours in 1931.
20 years later, other areas were discovered, and as of today over 5 ½ miles of paths have been discovered.
For those of you in better physical shape, there is another option for exploring the cavern. The Wild Cave Expedition Tour offers 5 different tours ranging from 2 hours up to 4 ½ hours. You will be crawling through tiny openings and you will get dirty. Safety gear is also provided on these wild tours.
The RV Park & Campground includes Full Hook-up sites, water & electric sites, primitive sites and furnished cabins.
The campground is a bit pricy if you're on a tight budget, but we definitely felt that paying just a bit more for a site was well worth it, we were so close to the attractions we were visiting.
If you're planning future RV vacations to the Chattanooga area, we definitely recommend a visit to Raccoon Mountain Caverns and Campground.

TVA RACCOON MOUNTAIN HYDROELECTRIC PLANT | TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY
Transforming the South: Federal Development in the Tennessee Valley, 1915-1960 (Making the Modern South):
“As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.”
The Raccoon Mountain project is TVA’s largest hydroelectric facility and is a little unique. Water is pumped to the reservoir on top of the mountain during periods of low demand and then used to generate electricity when additional power is needed. The pumped-storage plant is located in southeast Tennessee on a site that overlooks the Tennessee River downstream of Chattanooga.
The plant works like a large storage battery: during periods of low demand, water is pumped from Nickajack Reservoir at the base of the mountain to the reservoir built at the top. It takes 28 hours to fill the upper reservoir. When demand is high, water is released from a tunnel that is drilled through the center of the mountain; the falling water drives the generators in the underground the power plant.
For more information about TVA dams, visit tva.gov.
The Tennessee Valley Authority is a corporate agency of the United States that provides electricity for business customers and local power distributors serving more than 9 million people in parts of seven southeastern states.
The area around Raccoon Mountain is a state-designated Wildlife Observation Area. The mountaintop is home to whitetail deer, woodchucks, gray foxes and, of course, raccoons. The most compelling wildlife attraction of the area is a large wintering population of bald eagles, which can be sighted from the overlook as they hunt in the waters at the base of Raccoon Mountain.
Raccoon Mountain has over 28 miles of trails with about 6 miles being considered easy and the rest being moderate to difficult. Even though all trails are open for foot traffic, they are most often used by mountain bikers. You will occasionally see a trail runner. The trails were constructed and are maintained by TVA's partner, Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association (SORBA).
There are fantastic views from Raccoon Mountain and depending on which side you are on will determine what you see – it could be downtown Chattanooga, the Tennessee River gorge or Lookout Mountain.
The Raccoon Mountain Visitor Center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily from April through October, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. November through March except for major holidays and in times of severe weather. Staffed by TVA retirees, the visitor center features maps, videos and displays explaining Raccoon Mountain, TVA's history and its activities today.
How to Get There
From Chattanooga: Take I-24 towards Nashville to exit 175 (Browns Ferry Road). Turn right on Browns Ferry Road; then left on Elder Mountain Road. Go about 1.8 miles and turn left on TVA Access Road; continue about 1.5 miles to the visitor center.
Fees
Visitor centers, trails, boat ramps, and canoe access points operated by TVA are provided to the public with no fee

Chattanooga floods , Tennessee floods, a wild history
Chattanooga floods , Tennessee floods
Contemporary extension of the Hunter Museum of American Art
As the birthplace of the tow truck, Chattanooga is the home of the International Towing and Recovery Hall of Fame and Museum.[106] Another transportation icon, the passenger train, can be found at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, called TVRM by locals, which is the largest operating historic railroad in the South. Chattanooga is home to the Hunter Museum of American Art. Other notable museums include the Chattanooga History Center, the National Medal of Honor Museum, the Houston Museum, the Chattanooga African American Museum, and the Creative Discovery Museum.[107][108][109][110][111]
Arts and literature
Chattanooga has a wide range of performing arts in different venues. Chattanooga's historic Tivoli Theatre, dating from 1921 and one of the first public air-conditioned buildings in the United States, is home to the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera (CSO), which became the first merged symphony and opera company in the United States in 1985. The CSO performs under the baton of Kayoko Dan.[112] The Chattanooga Theatre Centre offers 15 productions each year in three separate theater programs: the Mainstage, the Circle Theater, and the Youth Theater.[113][114] Another popular performance venue is Memorial Auditorium.
Chattanooga hosts several writing conferences, including the Conference on Southern Literature and the Festival of Writers, both sponsored by the Arts & Education Council of Chattanooga.[115][116][117]
Attractions
Chattanooga touts many attractions, including the Tennessee Aquarium, caverns, and new waterfront attractions along and across the Tennessee River. In the downtown area is the Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel, housed in the renovated Terminal Station. Also downtown are the Creative Discovery Museum, a hands-on children's museum dedicated to science, art, and music; an IMAX 3D Theatre, and the newly expanded Hunter Museum of American Art. The Tennessee Riverwalk, an approximately 13-mile-long (21 km) trail running alongside the river, is another attraction for both tourists and residents alike.
Across the river from downtown is the North Shore district, roughly bounded by the Olgiati Bridge to the west and Veterans Bridge to the east. The newly renovated area draws locals and tourists to locally owned independent boutique stores and restaurants, plus attractions along the Chattanooga Riverpark system, including Coolidge Park and Renaissance Park.[118][119]
The Chattanooga Zoo at Warner Park is located a short distance from the downtown area.
Parks and natural scenic areas provide other attractions. The red-and-black painted See Rock City barns along highways in the Southeast are remnants of a now-classic Americana tourism campaign to attract visitors to the Rock City tourist attraction in nearby Lookout Mountain, Georgia. The mountain is also the site of Ruby Falls and Craven's House.[120] The Lookout Mountain Incline Railway is a steep funicular railway that rises from the St. Elmo Historic District to the top of the mountain, where passengers can visit the National Park Service's Point Park and the Battles for Chattanooga Museum.[121] Formerly known as Confederama, the museum includes a diorama that details the Battle of Chattanooga. From the military park, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Moccasin Bend and the Chattanooga skyline from the mountain's famous point or from vantage points along the well-marked trail system.[122]
The Heritage park is a park that lies in East Brainerd. Heritage park has a bocce ball court, a playground complete with swings, and a walking pavement. The park also features an off-leash dog park which is operated by the Friends of East Brainerd, the City of Chattanooga Parks and Recreation Department, McKamey Animal Center and the Goodwill Assistance Dog Academy.
Near Chattanooga, the Raccoon Mountain Reservoir, Raccoon Mountain Caverns, and Reflection Riding Arboretum and Botanical Garden boast a number of outdoor and family fun opportunities. Other arboretums include Bonny Oaks Arboretum, Cherokee Arboretum at Audubon Acres, and Cherokee Trail Arboretum. The Ocoee River, host to a number of events at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, features rafting, kayaking, camping, and hiking. Just outside Chattanooga is the Lake Winnepesaukah amusement park. The Cumberland Trail begins in Signal Mountain, just outside Chattanooga.
TVA Raccoon Mountain: Generating Power Hundreds of Feet beneath Your Feet
A huge construction projectis happening in our backyard, but you can't see it.
The massive construction project is hundreds of feet underground and when it's finished, you'll have extra power to keep warm this winter.
Many people know about the man-made lake on top of Raccoon Mountain west of Chattanooga. It's the Pumped Storage Plant underground that's having work done.
How does it work? It's really simple. Millions of gallons of water are taken out of the Tennessee River every night, through a pipe that brings it 400 feet into the base of Raccoon Mountain. From there, it then goes into a pump that sends it 400 more feet, then up almost 1,100 feet to a man-made lake on top of the mountain.
During the day, that same water is released through the same pipe back down the mountain to the same pumps that sent it skyward, only this time they are serving as generators with turbines inside, that the water turns to generate electricity.
That same water is then released back into the Tennessee River.
Ever since 1978, Raccoon Mountain has been one of the little-known ways that T-V-A generates power. It's still a mystery to some people, says plant manager Ken Cornett. It's an unknown and it's really an engineering marvel when you see how it operates.
Every five to seven years, TVA says it has to shut down the four generators at the Raccoon Mountain Pumped Storage Plant for maintenance. We're looking for cracked concrete, excessive wear that we can take the opportunity to repair or correct, says Raccoon Mountain Senior Operator Heath Rogers.
During the shutdown period, usually one of the four big water cylinders, called spherical valves are completely taken out, and the seals on them replaced. The spherical valve works like a water faucet in the kitchen. The seals being replaced are like the rubber gaskets in the faucet. It's critical for TVA to be able to continue running the other 3 units in the event that a maintenance issue arises with any one of them, Rogers says.
At one point, TVA says it had problems with rotors in the power generators that spin to make electricity during the day. Over the past three years, we've done a lot of work to replace the rotors, we've rebuilt equipment on the generators, says Cornett, we've put new transformers in the mountain and the cables are the last piece of the puzzle.
Those cables carrying electricity generated from beloware massive. Each one weighs 15 pounds per foot and they range anywhere from 2,200 feet to 2,600 feet, Cornett says, so you're looking at approximately 40,000 pounds per cable.
Each cable is pulled up the visitors center elevator shaft 1,080 feet high, to be tied into the TVA power grid. While work is going on down below, work on other parts of the facility is also going on.. almost 1,100 feet higher, workers are doing maintenance on the lake.
We're told that no major problems were discovered during this down time for Raccoon Mountain.
Right now, the Raccoon Mountain Pumped Storage facility is on target to resume generating power on November 21st.

Lookout Mountain Incline Railway in Tennessee
According to Wikipedia... The Lookout Mountain Incline Railway is an inclined plane railway located along the side of Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in the United States. Passengers are transported from St. Elmo's Station at the base, to Point Park at the mountain summit, which overlooks the city and the Tennessee River. The railway is approximately one mile (1.6 km) in length (single track except for a short two-track stretch at the midway point, allowing operation of two cars at one time), and has a maximum grade of 72.7%. It is billed as the world's steepest passenger railway.
The Incline Railway opened on November 16, 1895, and was the second of two inclines constructed on Lookout Mountain; the first was the Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain Railway, which operated from 1886 to 1898. The railway is now operated by the Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority, the area's public transit agency.

Chattanooga is the fourth-largest city in the U.S. state of Tennessee, with a population of 167,674 as of the 2010 census, and an estimated population of 171,279 in 2012.[7] The city, which has a downtown elevation of approximately 680 feet (210 m), lies at the transition between the ridge-and-valley portion of the Appalachian Mountains and the Cumberland Plateau. The city is therefore surrounded by various mountains and ridges. The official nickname for Chattanooga is the Scenic City, being reinforced by the city's growing national reputation as a haven for numerous outdoor activities. Several unofficial nicknames include River City, Chatt, Nooga, Chattown, and Gig City, demonstrating Chattanooga's claims that it has the fastest internet service in the Western Hemisphere.[8][9]
Chattanooga is internationally known for the 1941 song, the world's first gold record, Chattanooga Choo Choo, by Glenn Miller and his orchestra.
Chattanooga is home to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) and Chattanooga State Community College.
