An amazing hike in Berkshire County in Western Massachusetts is Race Brook Falls located in Sheffield. For us this was a perfect fall hike just before Thanksgiving. It was moderately difficult as we avoided the marked trails in favor of hiking stream side. There is a lot more to see hiking this way. This is one of those hike tat is just as hard or harder going down as up.

Backpacking Race Brook Falls

My daughter came to visit from California and she wanted to hike the Appalachian Trail (AT). Although it would still be cold, we made plans to backpack for three days and two nights in the first week in April. We would stay two nights in the Race Brook Falls Campsite, located just off the AT between Mount Race and Mount Everett in Sheffield, MA

Day 1: We would start our hike t the Race Brook Falls Trail head, in Sheffield, MA. We set off expecting to stay overnight in Sages Ravine Campsite. A late start combined with thoroughly exploring four of the five Race Brook Falls led to overnight at Race Brook Falls Campsite instead. Race Brook Falls were simply beautiful and we hiked an extra two miles with our full pack exploring them. We made camp, had dinner and enjoyed the warm of the fire before retiring for the night. Overnight temps dropped to 29 degrees Fahrenheit.

Total distance hiked for day 1 was 3.8 miles with an elevation gain of 1,424 ft.

Day 2: We had breakfast in camp and used our small day packs to hike a half mile to the AT where we headed south toward Sages Ravine. The trail was mostly clear but there was snow and ice the trail particularly on the north side of Race Mountain. On top or Race Mountain we met up with a hiker who told us he had come up through Sages Ravine and the trail was very icy. Since We didn’t have traction devices with us we decided not to go all the way to Sages Ravine. As we continued south, we enjoyed great views of the Sheffield valley, Twin Lakes and Bear Mountain. Our lunch stop was at the southern end of the Race Mountain ridge. Where we watched our feathered friends float above and below us as the rode the wind in search of prey.

We hiked north back to where the Race Brook Falls Trail joined the AT. We could have headed back to camp, but Mount Everett was calling us for a visit. It would be a steep climb to the top, but we were rewarded with great views to the west of the Taconic Mountains and the tri-state area. Upon return to camp we ate dinner and enjoyed the campfire for a bit before retiring for the evening. Overnight temps again dropped to 29 degrees Fahrenheit.

Total distance hiked on day 2 was 5.6 miles with an elevation gain of 1,627 ft.

Day 3: We woke up early and had some cold breakfast. The hike down the steep Race Brook Falls Trail was challenging, but it wasn’t long before we reached the truck and were headed home.

Total distance hiked on day 3 was 1.9 miles with an elevation gain of 46 ft.
