Rio Grande Flow Levels and Future Drought Conditions
April 13, 2018 - You might be surprised to see how low the Rio Grande is through Albuquerque right now. The river has already dried for more than ten miles south of Socorro, and it’s running low in northern New Mexico as it runs through the Taos Gorge and alongside towns like Pilar.
But scientists aren’t necessarily surprised. Many have been researching how climate change will affect both surface and ground water supplies in the southwestern United States. In a new paper from University of New Mexico graduate Shaleene Chavarria and UNM’s Earth and Planetary Sciences Professor David Gutzler, the two show how warming is affecting snowpack and streamflows.
New Mexico in Focus has been covering record-low snowpack this year on Our Land, our monthly environmental series on environmental issues. And this week we look at what’s happening now that snowmelt is not refilling the river—and what new research tells us about where we are headed.

Southwest style from Michael Kors
SHOTLIST
APTN
New York, 14 September 2005
1. Various backstage
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Orlando Pita, Hair Stylist:
It's a little wind-swept, it's not perfectly done, there's girls that have been in the desert, it's hot, she quickly pins up her hair and it's kind of that natural way to do your hair up.
3. SOUNDBITE (English) Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York:
Well I love Michael because he dresses for women, you know, and I feel so good in his clothes. I love him, I mean especially this Fall is such a good look for me, very thin waists and just going out, you know, it's really good.
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael Kors, Designer:
I think that I am a very casual guy, I mean I'm really dressed up, for me, at the show but I'm a flip flop kind of boy so I'm pretty laid back. I think I am pretty optimistic and I love simplicity and this show is very glamorous but in a very low key way, it's very Michael Kors and it's really how I like to spend my summer, you know, in a sort of cosy, comfortable way .
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael Kors, Designer:
There's so much that I love, I mean there's an incredible, it looks like a camouflaged raincoat, that we are just throwing on with a pair of linen pants and a tank and it's lined in Mink. To me it's like the coolest thing in the world because it looks like an old army coat but it is lined in Mink and you know, our customers if they live in LA, they ware boots in the summer and flip flops in the winter and at night in the canyons doesn't a girl need a little Mink? So maybe that might be it, but I really love this collection.

SOUTHWEST STYLE FROM KORS
Michael Kors stirred things up at New York Fashion Week, adding some spice to his Southwest-themed spring collection, which included gauchos, camouflage and an O'Keeffe jacket.
Adding to Kors' kudos was Michael Douglas and his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, who wore a vintage beaded top and carried a black Kors handbag, seated in the front row, along with Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York.
The emerging seasonal trends, such as tiered skirts, metallics, vests, washed fabrics and higher waists, were certainly represented on the runway, but there was more of an effortless chic at Kors - maybe it was the models' strategically windblown hair.
Other noteworthy looks were an olive jersey dress with a suede collar dotted with grommets and a long ecru-coloured cashmere cardigan over an embroidered cotton batiste slip dress. And one would believe that any of his tanned, blonde, long-legged models would throw on the camouflage-print miniskirt and a chunky loose-weave turtleneck sweater on a Sunday afternoon, looking relaxed yet pulled together.
Fashion Week will run until Friday, September 16.

Skiing at Sandia Peak in Albuquerque
Sarah and I's first trip skiing, this is the second day after a first day of lessons. I bit it due to deeper powder, and Sarah ate it due to a little bit of ice. Great first trip of skiing as a family.
