EXPLORING BEACON HILL FORT HARWICH ESSEX
BEFORE WATCHING THIS PLEASE BE AWARE THAT WE DID NOT MANAGE TO GET INTO THE FORT. I WAS CONSIDERING DELETING THIS FOOTAGE, BUT WAS PERSUADED BY SEVERAL PEOPLE TO RELEASE IT.
I was joined by Jake for this failed attempt to enter Beacon Hill Fort in Harwich Essex on the coast. It has recently been bought from the council by two men who plan to restore and renovate the huge 5 acre site which contains close to 25 different buildings, ranging from observation towers, gun pits and emplacements, bunkers, pillboxes, underground tunnels and barracks.
They hope to turn it into a tourist attraction and open it to the public and bring an increased amount of tourism and money to the town of Harwich. This won't be ready until around 2022, but work has already begun on clearing and tidying the site up. They could do a great job, or they could turn it into an awful sanitised exhibition complete with zip wire, interactive centre and outdoor sports zone, gift shop and cafe!
Here is a link to the online newspaper article regarding the purchase of the site and their plans for it's future:
I would love to see it before this happens, but to be honest, I would probably pay to go in and walk around! At this present moment in time it is near on impossible to find entry into the site as it is behind an impenetrable metal spiked fence with cctv and guard dogs.
Originally built in the 19th century, it saw use in World War One, and was re-adapted in World War II, retaining the same basic plan.
A new emplacement was built to the south and fitted with twin 6 pounder (2.7 kg) guns, used for fast moving targets such as torpedo boats. Search lights were added to the 1860 battery on the front, and a pill box built on the extreme south west corner of the fort on Dovercourt Bay. The fort contains six main gun emplacements, battery observation post, two pill boxes, shelters, accommodation for officers, guard hut, store, workshops, fire engine shed, magazines, electricians store and shop, engine room and electric light platforms.
The works continue along the coast northwards, comprising a massive bank into which pill boxes and a two storey hexagonal radar tower have been constructed, all with commanding views of the Orwell estuary opposite Landguard fort.
Many of the 20th century buildings survive and retain important military information on the architecture of gun installations, ammunition storage, communications, observation and radar posts.
Instead, I have included some links below showing you a more detailed account of the interior of the site.

June 24, 1994 Mesoscale Convective System (Part 1)
Note : Part one is relatively boring and is mainly the build up as the storm approaches.
This was one of the largest and most active thunder storms seen in the UK during the 90's, as witnessed by a young me in Great Baddow, Essex. This is an edited version of the full video, but longer than the previous upload.
This storm was particularly notable for causing a record-breaking epidemic of asthma in Southern and Central England, leading to a severe strain on emergency services and a shortage of available drugs and personnel. Quite a lot has been written about this and can be found via Googles.

MARTELLO TOWER. Ft. Tom Outdoors.
The Martello Towers were small defensive forts built between 1804 & 1812 to protect the South and East coast of Britain from Invasion by Napoleonic France in the 19th century when tensions were high. These towers could withstand Cannon fire with their extremely thick walls and due to their height had Artillery mounts on their roofs.
During the Second World-war, many towers such as this one were incorporated in the anti-invasion defences against invasion by Nazi-Germany, similar to that of Pill-boxes.
This Tower based on the East coast had a Vickers machine gun Pillbox based on top, providing potential fire sweeping the beaches in an invasion that never came.
We Explore this Abandoned Martello Tower today with TOM OUTDOORS. With us teaming up with Ladders and Rope to explore this thing and it's History.
This video has taken a while to edit being busy with School and such. Tom uploaded a video of this place with us much closer to the time of visit.

Exploring RAF Rackheath WWII Air Base Remains. Norfolk, U.K.
The airfield opened in 1943. Designated Station 145, it was used by the USA 8th Air Force 467th Bomb Group, the ‘Rackheath Aggies’, flying B-24 Liberators. Its duties included attacking enemy infrastructure and countering the 1944 German Ardennes offensive. By the end of the war the group had completed 212 missions, dropping over 13,000 tons of bombs, and was credited with the best overall bombing accuracy in the 8th Air Force.
By 1945 the Airbase had been closed and the majority of its related structures left abandoned, many of these buildings can be discovered amoungst the overgrowth around the area of Rackheath.

HM Fort Roughs
HM Fort Roughs was one of several World War II installations that were designed by Guy Maunsell and known collectively as His Majesty's Forts or as Maunsell Sea Forts; its purpose was to guard the port of Harwich, Essex, and more broadly, the Thames estuary. This 4500 ton artificial naval installation is similar in some respects to fixed offshore oil platforms. It is situated on Rough Sands, a sandbar located approximately six miles from the coast of Suffolk and eight miles from the coast of Essex. Today it is the location of the self-proclaimed and unrecognised state, the Principality of Sealand.
