Kaunas Court gave a 5 year detention at penitentiary for former KGB officer Stanislovas Drelingas charged with murder of the Lithuanian anti-Soviet resistance commander Adolfas Ramanauskas Vanagas.

Stanislovas Drelingas, a former officer of Soviet repressive structures, was accused of participating in a secret operation in October, 1956 to detain one of the commanders of the Lithuanian anti-Soviet resistance movement and his wife Birutė Mažeikaitė-Vanda.

Following his detention, Ramanauskas was kept in a KGB prison in Vilnius and tortured for a year. He was sentenced to death by the Supreme Court of the Soviet Republic of Lithuania on 24-25 September 1957 and executed on 29 November in Vilnius.

A 84-year old convicted Drelingas did not arrive to listen a verdict as his advocate claimed he is sick. Drelingas did not recognize being guilty.

However, Kaunas court ruled that there are enough evidence to support Drelingas participation in a special operation, and since he was not a simple KGB officer, he must have known a real objective of operation as well.

Because of Drelingas age, court has decided to give him a minimum penalty - five year detention at penitentiary. It is possible to appeal this judgement.

Around 50,000 Lithuanians, the so-called forest brothers, took part in the anti-Soviet resistance movement in post-war Lithuania.

LRT EBU Lithuania commemorates 75 years of occupation and deportation

Lithuania marked day of Soviet occupation and deportations while a group of youth prepared for a mission to Siberia in order to repair graves of deportees.

The Soviet Union occupied Lithuania on June 15, in 1940 when the Red Army invaded the country. A year after on June 14 in 1941 Soviets started mass deportations of Lithuanian residents to Siberia who were called enemies of the people.

Based on the data of the Genocide and Resistance Research Center of Lithuania (LGGRTC) more than 280,000 people were deported from Lithuania in 1940–1953.

Lithuanians attending the commemorative events today observed a minute of silence. Deportees and their children shared their stories.

Lithuanian Parliament Seimas held a solemn commemoration and handed over a symbolic flag to the youth that every year travels to Siberia in order to repair graves of deportees and visit those who did not came back to Lithuania.

There were 12 youth expeditions so far that have rearranged and cleaned over 100 Lithuanian cemeteries. The Mission Siberia 2015 will start in the middle of July.

Lithuania is a member of the European Union, the Council of Europe, eurozone, Schengen Agreement, NATO and OECD. It is also a member of the Nordic Investment Bank, and part of Nordic-Baltic cooperation of Northern European countries. The United Nations Human Development Index lists Lithuania as a very high human development country.

Vilnius

Vilnius (Lithuanian pronunciation: [ˈvʲɪlʲnʲʊs] ( ); see also other names) is the capital of Lithuania, and its largest city, with a population of 539,939 (806,308 together with Vilnius County) as of 2014. Vilnius is located in the southeast part of Lithuania and is the second biggest city of the Baltic states.
Vilnius is the seat of the Vilnius city municipality and of the Vilnius district municipality. It is also the capital of Vilnius County. The first known written record of Vilnius as the Lithuanian capital is known from Gediminas' letters in 1323.
