Kids with Guns: UK's Army Cadet Force (Full Length)
In a new episode of Rule Britannia, VICE joins the UK's Army Cadet Force and asks what the youth club can give British kids who may not have a lot else.
The Army Cadet Force has over 46,000 cadets from the ages of 12 to 18, training in 1,700 detachments all over the country. The super low-cost club evenings and training camps equip teenagers with discipline and skills in everything from orienteering and military knowledge to weaponry, first aid, and sports.
Smartly uniformed and proudly representing Queen and Country, the young cadets are taught to embody British values. The theory that cadet activities could keep youth on the right track has seen huge government funding allocated to expand the cadets by next year.

They Were The Few...Tim Kent with The Petworth Town Band 24 March 2012.wmv
This new song They Were The Few is about The Battle of Britain. It was conceived and written by Barry Turner and Tim Kent. The Musical arrangement for Brass / Wind Band is by Richard Baker. This is its first world public performance with a band backing the vocals. Tim Kent sings the song with The Petworth Town Band during a concert at Billingshurst Village Hall on Saturday 24th March 2012. The audience of around 120 were very appreciative to hear this new song about such an important event for Britain in World War Two. As this new song is scored for both Brass and Wind Bands we would like it to be played by many bands and singers throughout this land. We also wish that the RAF Band will play it too and hope it will be quickly accepted as a National Standard. Thank you to The Petworth Town Band for all their hard work in getting this song launched! Barry, Richard and I hope you like this song and we dedicate it to all those brave men who took part in The Battle of Britain way back in 1940. This song was originally recorded by Barry and Tim (aka Harveys Boys) way back in 2004 on a CD entitled Harveys Best HATCD046.
The Sloane Club
Number 52 Lower Sloane Street started life as part of a handsome late Victorian development on and old 18th Century site in Chelsea known as Hans Town. The buildings, with their red-brick gables and fine detailing, were in the style dubbed ‘Pont Street Dutch’ and were enviably near the many fashionable milliners, mercers and glovemakers lining Sloane Square.
The Service Women’s Club was founded for serving and former lady officers of the Armed Forces in World War II, before becoming The Helena Club for ladies, established in the early 1960s by a lady-in-waiting to Princess Marie Louise. Gentlemen were admitted during the following decade and by 1976 it became The Sloane Club as we know it.

Those Magnificent Men - The War Photography of Capt. William Chambers RFC (1897-1918)
Born in 1897 William Chambers was an electrical engineer by profession. He joined the Lincolnshire Regiment early in the war. He applied to join the Royal Flying Corp, and as a young officer learnt to fly at the Royal Aero Club, obtaining his pilot’s license exactly a hundred years ago in October 1916. He then served as a photographic reconnaissance officer with 49 Squadron in Kent.
This exhibition reveals him to have been a remarkably gifted and brave photographer. His work is a remarkable testament to the precarious nature of early flight, and the brave men on both sides who took warfare into the air.
His collection of some 80 large format negatives taken on service, and an album of photographs, passed through the family to his nephew, New Longton resident Richard Chambers. A keen photographer himself, Mr Chambers realised there immense historical significance and passed them to fellow Leyland Photographic Society member David Lewis. A recognised master of developing images from early negatives, David spent over 200 hours producing the sepia toned images.
The exhibition graphically shows the risk intrinsic to early flight: landing strips were usually rough fields, the aircraft were string bound wooden struts and canvas, and crashes were very frequent. Around 8000 men were killed in training – more than in actual combat.
On the 15th May 1918, now a captain in the RAF, William Chambers took off on a routine reconnaissance over France with his American observer Lt. R.J.Burky. They were shot down by a German fighter, killing both men. Captain Chambers has no known grave, and is listed on the Arras Memorial. His pictures were carefully treasured, and formed a very successful exhibition at South Ribble Museum & Exhibition Centre, Church Road, Leyland in Autumn 2016. The Centre was overwhelmed with Internet interest around the world. Visitors now have a second opportunity to see Capt Chambers remarkable collection.
The pictures, taken by fighter pilot and air photographer Captain William Chambers, reveal the hazards of daily life for the men in the Royal Flying Corps, and are a remarkable testament to the brave men who carried warfare into the air. The 80 sepia-toned images lay undeveloped for almost 100 years following Capt Chambers’ death during a routine reconnaissance mission over France in May 1918. He was aged just 21.The negatives were sent back to his family among his personal effects, and remained in the attic until they were inherited by his nephew Richard Chambers, of Lostock Hall, in the 1980s.
A keen photographer himself, but without the means to develop the pictures, Mr Chambers realised their value and turned to David Lewis of Leyland Photographic Society - an expert in printing early negatives - for help. Mr Lewis, an award-winning amateur photographer and leading light of Leyland Photographic Society for the last half century, spent more than 200 hours painstakingly developing the pictures in his home darkroom.
“I found the whole process very emotional,” said Mr Lewis, 80, of Bretherton Close, Leyland.
“There were around 8,000 pilots killed in training and life expectancy could be a matter of just a few days. These pictures show the importance of the Royal Flying Corps, which later became the Royal Air Force (RAF).
“During the Battle of the Somme the pilots would fly over the battle lines and take pictures of the German trenches. Then they would write a note, put it in a metal tin, and drop it down to the artillery to tell them if they were firing in the right place. It’s amazing to think of.”
The remarkable images have excited historians from around the country and it is hoped that this event is only the start of the exhibition’s travels.
“The exhibition graphically shows the risk intrinsic to early flight,” said Dr David Hunt, curator of South Ribble Museum and Exhibition Centre.
“First World War aeronautical experts have told us that because the pictures were taken on service and often after accidents - rather than by the manufacturers - they are quite rare.”
‘’David Lewis has once again shown his incredible skill with the wet process and we are all very proud that he has chosen our tiny museum as the first place to exhibit this remarkable collection’’.
Exhibition runs from 9th April to 4th May - Official opening 11.00am Sat 13th April 2019
