Raft Cove Provincial Park, BC
Raft Cove Provincial Park is on the far Northwestern coast of Vancouver Island south of Cape Scott. A rugged 2 kilometer trail leads to the beach which is very muddy in places and often involves traversing fallen trees above wetland and marsh. The beach is sandy and rocky and primitive wilderness camping is to be expected. The area is subject to high winds and wet Pacific weather systems. It is best to go well prepared for adverse weather. My Side Adventure To San Josef Bay, BC, Canada
Wayne On The Road EP037
To celebrate my 5 month mark on the road I took a side excursion with only the truck up to Cape Scott Provincial Park on the Northwest corner of Vancouver Island, specifically to explore San Josef Bay. I time lapsed the drive up from outside of Campbell River, hiked into the bay and had a wonderful afternoon in this amazing place. What a beautiful spot this is!
This is part one of the whole trip with more coming in the next video.

San Josef Bay, Vancouver Island
Darlene and I took a trip up to the north end of Vancouver Island in August 2018.
We spent a few days exploring the rugged north island bush, finishing with a great hike out to San Josef Bay.
I always love it up here, it's home....less than 90 kilometers from where I was born.

Cape Scott Vancouver Island- Best Backpacking Trip of the Year - Part 1
Last summer Clay and headed to northern Vancouver Island to hike the Cape Scott Trail. Starting with a night at San Joseph Bay, we hiked up Mt St. Patrick, then made the 16 km hike Nissen Bight.
The Cape Scott area was once shared territory of the Tlatlasikwala, Nakumgilisala and Yutlinuk First Nations. The Yutlinuk died out in the early 1800s and the Tlatlasikwala and Nakumgilisala joined in the 1850s, then joined again with other First Nations to become the Nahwitti.
The first European settlers to the area were Danish. They arrived in 1896 but had mostly abandoned their homesteads by 1909. Another wave of Europeans and Americans arrived in 1913, but mostly dissipated by 1918 thanks to conscription for WW1. By this time, a rough corduroy road had been built throughout the area. The trail follows these roads and the old logs still cover the trail in many places. Telegraph wire, building remains, old farm equipment, fences, and dykes can be found throughout the park.
Cape Scott itself was used as a radar station in WWII and is now home to a lighthouse. ...I'm getting ahead of myself though. In this video, we only make it to Nissen Bight where we meet a pile (literally a pile) of land fleas.
That is where this video ends.

San Josef Bay
Shrouded in fog and a cloying, unshakeable sense of a stark and uncaring environment, Cape Scott remains one of the more inhospitable areas on the British Columbian coast. Ruins from the small settlement attempted by Danish settlers can be found, deep within the park. Like anyone who has tried to eke out an existence in this harsh land, all return to civilization. Beautiful area.
Musical credit goes to Chris Stapleton, the song is called Death Row.
