Devprayag Bathing Ghat and Raghunath Temple

After visiting Gangotri and Uttarkashi we visited Devaprayag on our return trip. A prayag is a confluence of two rivers and Devaprayag is one of the five important prayags (confluences) on Himalays. Devprayag is about 70 kms from Rishikesh and located about 800 meters above sea level. It is the confluence of river Alakananda and Bhagirathi whih forms river Ganga thereafter.

We stayed in Kedar Badri Samiti rest house which was on the banks of the river. We were able to see the river, the bathing ghat, the mountains, Raghunath temple and Devprayag Township from our room. We stayed in Devaprayag for two days. It was interesting to mark the color differences of the two rivers. Bhagirathi was looking greenish while Alakananda was looking gray. However the current of Alakananda was much stronger than Bhagirathi. As it was rainy season the river was full of water.

My mom (85 years) took a holy bath in the sangam. After taking bath we climbed up more than 200 steps to visit Raghunath temple on the hill. Though climbing hundreds of steps to Raghunath temple was difficult for my mom we could make it possible and had the darshan of Lord Raghunath. The mountain views, bathing ghat and hanging bridges on the river were all looking very attractive.

Raghunathji Temple (also called Tirukantamenum Kadi Nagar) in Devprayag, a pilgrimage town in Tehri Garhwal district in Himalayas in the North Indian state of Uttarakhand, is dedicated to Vishnu. It is located 73 km from Rishikesh on the Rishikesh - Badrinath highway. Constructed in the Deula style, the temple is glorified in the Divya Prabandha, the early medieval Tamil canon of the Azhwar saints from the 6th–9th centuries AD. It is one of the 108 Divyadesam dedicated to Vishnu, who is worshipped as Raghunathji and his consort Lakshmi as Sita.

Deoprayag is a beautiful showcase of traditions, myths and mysticism. This is the place where the holy rivers Bhagirathi and Alaknanda meet, making it a unique pilgrimage like the Prayag of Allahabad.From here onward two rivers merge into one and take the name 'Ganga'
Deoprayag though situated, at an altitude of 618 m, is endowed with abundant natural beauty. According to a belief, Lord Ram and his father King Dasharath did penance here. The main temple of the town is the 'Raghunath Temple', dedicated to Lord Rama.

The bathing ghat at Deoprayag is built with multiple levels to accommodate different water levels during the monsoon. It is also the winter home of the priests of Badrinath.Deoprayag is a pilgrimage centre of great significance. In Treta-yuga, Lord Ram and Lakshman performed a yajna here to atone for killing Ravan, who was a Brahmin. The ancient Raghunath Temple here with a 15-foot tall statue of Sri Ram (Sri Raghunath) is one of the 108 most important temples in India. In front of the temple is a statue of Garuda. Behind the temple and slightly up a hill is Vamana's cave and nearby is Lord Ram's stone throne.

Traditionally, it is considered to be the place where sage Devasharma led his ascetic life, giving birth its present name, Devprayag. It is one of the five sacred confluences in the hills and is an important place of pilgrimage for devout Hindus.
Devprayag is the place where river Alaknanda & Bhagirathi confluence, but according to mythology, there is another river that belongs to this confluence named Saraswati which originates from Mana Village in Badrinath and in Devprayag, the river comes from the feet of Shri Raghunath Ji in Raghunath Temple. Also according to mythology, the footprints of Lord Rama are purported to exist at Ram Kunda.

Devprayag is surrounded by 3 Godly peaks, named Giddhanchal Parvat, Dashrathanchal Parvat, and Narsinghancal Parvat. Giddhanchal Parvat is on top of Raghunnath Ji temple. Narsinghanchal Parvat is in front of Giddhanchal Parvat and Dashrathanchal Parvat is on top right side of Sangam. Lord Shiva is worshiped here in the form of Linga, named Tondeshwar Mahadev and Dhaneshwar Mahadev. Tondeshwar Mahadev is Just in front of Sangam. It is very crowded on the day of Mahashivratri. Many devotees arrives here to donate Gangajal on Linga. Dhaneshwar Mahadev is in route on old Badrinath Way, starts from Bah Bajar (A market in Devprayag). With this way devotees can reach at Just another temple of Maa Durga in Pundal Village. In this temple, Maa Durga is worshiped in Maa Bhuvneshwari form. The temple of Maa Bhuvneshwari is situated at Pundal village which is at footstep of approximately 500m-700m from Dhaneshwar Temple. Mishras live here in Pundal village.

Devprayag is divided into three parts. One is Bah Bazzar(Pouri Side part), second one is Beech Bajar (laying down to the Highway No.58)and the third is Shanti Bazar, main bus stand of Devprayag.

The term Devprayag stands for 'Holy Confluence' in the Sanskrit language. This is the confluence of two holy rivers Alaknanda and Bhagirathi. From where the point of these two rivers ends, Holly Ganges emerges from. Devprayag is a small town situated in Tehri Garhwal district in the state of Uttarakhand. Apart from that some of its area comes under Pauri Garhwal District. It is also a Nagar Panchayat and a division of Panch Prayag. Devprayag is the last prayag of River Alaknanda. Devprayag is located on the Rishikesh-Badrinath highway. The Hindus pay immense respect to the town as it is the place where the holy River Ganga takes it shape. The name of the region was given after Dev Sharma who led his ascetic life. It is also conceived by the people that Dev Sharma saw a quick look of God at the site. It is also believed that Lord Rama and king Dushratha performed self-mortification here. There is an old shrine of Raghunath Ji located at the confluence using massive stones. According to the belief of the people the temple was built more than ten thousands years in the past.

In the year of 1803 a devastating earthquake destroyed the shape of the town but later on the area brought to its real form by a constructional touch. The meetings of the rivers have Barahma Kund on the Bhagirathi River and Vashisht Kund on Alaknanda River. There is a area popularly known as Baitalshila which is believe that a bath in it can free patients from the disease of leprosy.

Devprayag is around 2,265 ft high above the sea level. Religiously, the site is very sacred and of immense significance among the Hindu followers. Tourist, saints, pundits and munies visit the temple throughout the year from across the country. Devprayag is also hugely blessed with natural beauty. Apart from visiting Devprayag, tourists can also take a walk to the sacred place of Danda Naggaraja temple and the Chandrabadni temple.

A thousand years ago, when Adiguru Shankaracharya came to the area in Badrikashram in the 8th century, many South Indian Brahmins from different areas with different castes came over here with Aadiguru. These were Tetriya Krishna Yajur Brahmin. Inspired by the wisdom of Brahmins, Maharaja of Garhwal assigned them to worship Lord Ram in Raghunath Temple in Devprayag. When these Brahmins arrived at Badrinath, they were worshiped by the pilgrims. Since then, Brahmins are known as Panda in Dham and everywhere. Pandas worship devotees of the same area of each region they offers. Every Panda plays a significant role in any devotee life while he arrives Badrinath for Puja or Darshan. While they arrive Badrinath, Pandas look after them very carefully. Pandas organize everything for their Yatri like food, accommodation, puja's tickets, and everything which is really needful to the yatri. Pandas have a thousands years of literature of their devotee(Yatri). In this literature, every information is mentioned about devotee's last 3 or 4 generations. Every Panda having various types of books related to his Yatri's information, like Bahi, Daskhati and all others. Every Yatri is identified with the help of these books. The peoples of Devprayag (Pandas) spend their 6 months of a year at Badrinath and rest of 2-3 months in Devprayag. They spend this in their own regions. It is quite hard for a Panda and his family as He spends very less time with the family. Many peoples say that Pandagiri is a very normal and less prestigious occupation. But as it belongs to their God Almighty and this is their patrimonial occupation, it automatically becomes more prestigious rather than the other occupations.+ the other hand, Bal Mithai is a brown chocolate-like fudge, made with roasted khoya, coated with white sugar balls.

Traditionally, it is considered to be the place where sage Devasharma led his ascetic life, giving birth its present name, Devprayag. It is one of the five sacred confluences in the hills and is an important place of pilgrimage for devout Hindus.Devaprayāga means Godly Confluence in Sanskrit. As per Vedic scriptures, Devaprayaga is the sacred event of merging two heavenly rivers, Alakananda and Bhagirathi, to form the holy Ganges.On a terrace in the upper part of the village is the temple of Raghunathji, built of huge stones, pyramidal in form and capped by a white cupola.

Devprayag is the home of the late Acharya, Pt. Chakradhar Joshi (a scholar in Astronomy and Astrology) who established Nakshatra Vedh Shala (an observatory) in the year 1946. This is located on a mountain called Dashrathanchal at Devprayag. The observatory is well equipped with two telescopes and many books to support research in astronomy. It also contains about 3000 manuscripts from 1677 AD onwards collected from various parts of the country. Apart from the latest equipment, it also has the ancient equipment like Surya Ghati, Dhruv Ghati which showcase the pride of Bharatiya progress in the field of astronomy. Shri Dr. Prabhakar Joshi and Acharya Shri Bhaskar Joshi (Popularly known as Guruji) are currently in charge and caretakers of the observatory.

The Alaknanda rises at the confluence and feet of the Satopanth and Bhagirath Kharakglaciers in Uttarakhand near the border with Tibet. The headwaters of the Bhagirathi are formed at Gaumukh, at the foot of the Gangotri glacier and Khatling glaciers in the Garhwal Himalaya. These two sacred rivers join to form the Ganges (Ganga) in Devprayag.

Devprayag is 70 km from Rishikesh. Devprayag has an average elevation of 830 metres (2,723 feet).
