Raichur (formerly Raichore) is a city municipality in the district of Raichur in the Indian state of Karnataka. Raichur, located between Krishna and Tungabhadra rivers, is the headquarters of Raichur district. It is located 409 km from the state capital, Bangalore.
Raichur has a rich history, having been a part of various empires, such as the Bahmanis sultan's Vijayanagara, Adil Shahi dynasty of bijapur and nizam of hyderabad. The city is famous for its imposing Raichur Fort Here, stone inscriptions have been found in Persian, Urdu, and Arabic which belonged to the bastion of the fort, referring to its construction in 1294. Among the ruins of the immense fort are many irrigation tanks and old temples. The fort was built by Kakatiya king Rudra in 1284 CE which passed on to the Vijayanagar kingdom after the decline of the Kakatiyas. Thereafter the fort was under dispute for nearly two centuries. It was captured by the Bahmanis in 1323 CE. Saluva Narasimha Raya expressed a wish in his testament that the city of Raichur be recaptured. This had been in the mind of Krishnadevaraya since his coronation in 1509. In the year 1520 Krishnadevaraya sent Saeed Maraikar, a Muslim in his service, to Goa with a large sum of money to buy horses. Maraikar instead went to Adil Khan with the money and offered his services. Krishnadevaraya made a demand that Maraikar be returned along with the money which was duly refused. During the period of peace Krishnadevaraya made extensive preparations for a grand attack on Raichur doab. After the court decided that Raichur should be attacked the king invited all commanders (Nayakas) in his service to take part in the battle.
Raichur is very rich from the epigraphical point of view. It has already yielded hundreds of inscriptions, ranging from the Mauryan period up to the end of the Muslim period. The inscriptions are in a variety of languages such as Sanskrit, Prakrit, Kannada, Telugu, Arabic, and Persian and belonging to almost all the dynasties that ruled over the Dekkan. The most important places from this point of view are Maski, Koppal, Kuknur, Hatti Gold Mines, Mudgal, Lingsugur and Raichur

The hill fort of Raichur, which was of great importance in the past, is surrounded on three sides by a double row of massive but low circuit walls. The inner wall, which is constructed of huge blocks of well-dressed and nicely fitted stones without the aid of any cementing material. according to a long Kannada inscription dated A.D. 1294 on a slab in the western inner wall. The outer wall, which is built of comparatively rough stone masonry, is, on the other hand, the work of the Muslims. The outer fortifications contain five gateways : the Mecca Darwaza on the west, the Naurangi Darwaza on the north, the Kati Darwaza on the east, the Khandak Darwaza on the south and the Doddi Darwaza on the south-east. The inner wall has two gateways : the Sailani Darwaza on the west and the Sikandari Darwaza on the east.

The Naurangi Darwaza (Navarang Darwaza) was so designated because of the lavishly painted and sculptured decorations which once adorned the gateway. The material used for its construction, from its mythological and artistic peculiarities, appears to have belonged originally to Hindu structures. The first gate of this entrance, facing the south, is flanked by a bastion on either end, one of them being square and the other circular. On a square stone slab in the former bastion, is a well carved figure of a Naga king, seated cross-legged in meditation on a fish, with a crown of five serpent-hoods on his head. Here, on other slabs, are carved various scenes from the Hindu epics Mahabharata and Ramayana.

रायचूर हे एक मोठं शहर आहे, शहराच्या मध्यवर्ती ठिकाणी बस स्टॅन्ड च्या समोर व कबरस्थानच्या पुढे उभा ठाकला आहे हा रायचूरचा गिरिदुर्ग,
रायचूर परिसर अनेक राजवटीने राज्य केलेला आहे, काकटिया कामा, मुसुनरी कामा,राष्ट्रकूट , विजयनगर साम्रज्य, बहामनी , निझाम व या सर्व राजवटींचं चढ उताराचा रायचूर किल्ला साक्षीदार होता.
रायचूर किल्ला बदामी चालुक्य पासून अस्तित्वात आहे, चालुक्य कल्याणी राजवटी मध्ये किल्ला पुंनावनिर्माण केलं. गेलं.
पश्चिमेकडील भिंतीवर असणाऱ्या शिलालेखानुसार हा किल्ला शक १२१६ मध्ये काकटियाच्या राणी रुद्रमा देवी यांच्या अधिकाराने व राजा गोरे रंगा रद्दीवरु सूचनेने, सैनिक प्रमुख राजा विठ्ठलायाने बांधला.
पुढे शक १२९४ मध्ये वारंगलच्या काकटियानी किल्ला मजबूत केला.
कबरस्थान जवळ गाडी लावून दगडावर असलेल्या कोरीव पायर्यांनी गड चढाई सुरुवात केली.
पश्चिमेकडून 1 मस्जिद आहे, पुढे अभेद्य तटबंदी दिसते, वर अवाढव्य दगड आपल्याला दिसून येतात याच दगडमडे आहे किल्ल्याचा पश्चिमेकडील दरवाजा.
मोठे दगडांचा वापर पुरेपूर करून ते तसेच ठेऊन दोन दगडांच्या मधल्या जागेतून रस्ता आहे. इथे वर एक बुरुज आहे.
तटबंधी वरून चालत आपण पुढे जातो तरी या मोठ्या दगडावरून नजर काही हटत नाही. डावीकडे हे दगड तर उजवीकडे गडाखाली मोठं प्रेक्षणीय आम तलाव .
चालत आपण गडाच्या पूर्वेकडील बुरुजाकडे पोहोचतो. येथून पुन्हा मोठ्या दगडाच्या वाटेने आपण गडमाथ्यावर पोहोचतो. वरूनच नैसर्गिक दगडी थोडं बांधीव दरवाजा मधून 15 मिनिट गडावर पोहोचायला लागतात.
गडमाथ्यावर इमारतींचे व बुरुजाचे अवशेष दिसून येतात, गडमाथा आटोपशीर आहे. माथ्यावर एक इमारतीचा बाजूला जरोखा आहे, हवा छान लागते. इथे एक मोठी तोफ दिसून येते.
किल्ल्याला एकूण 4 दरवाजे असून त्यांची नावे, नवरंग दरवाजा, काटी दरवाजा व मेक्का दरवाजा, खंदक दरवाजा असे आहेत. १ मज्जीद व २ दर्गाह आहेत, खंदक दरवाजाच्या मागे टाकीवाले बाबा दर्गाह आहे.
किल्ला व परिसर स्वच्छ आहे. तसेच शहरांमध्येही काही वाडे व दरवाजे अवशेषरुपी पाहण्यास मिळतात.
किल्ल्यावरून पूर्ण रायचूर शहर दिसते, पश्चिमेकडे रायचूर बस स्टॅन्ड तर पूर्व उत्तरेकडे रायचूर ताव म्हणजेच आम तालाब प्रेक्षणीय आहे.

Raichur is a town in the Indian state of Karnataka. One can see local buses and auto-rickshaw in Raichur. The local transport is active at night in Raichur.
The District of Raichur was a part of the Hyderabad State till the re-organisation of State on 1st November 1956. The recorded history of the district is traced to as far back as the third century B.C. The fact that three minor rock edicts of Ashoka are found in this district one at Maski in the Lingasugur taluk and the other two near Koppal, prove that this area was included in the dominions of the great Mauryan king Ashoka (273 - 236 B.C.). At that time, this region was under the governance of the Viceroy or Mahamatra of Ashoka. Early in the Christian era, the district appears to have been a part of the kingdom of the Satavahanas. The Vakatakas, who reigned during the 3rd and 4th centuries A.D., seems to have held sway over Raichur for some time, after which it appears to have been included in the Kadamba dominions. The next dynasty of importance, which ruled over this region, was that of the Chalukyas of Badami.
