History and culture
The town was named for the 19th-century Chief Winnemucca of the local Northern Paiute tribe, who traditionally lived in this area. He and his band had a camp near here. Winnemucca, loosely translated, means one moccasin. The chief's daughter, Sarah Winnemucca, was an advocate for education and fair treatment of the Paiute and Shoshone tribes in the area. Their family all learned to speak English, and Sarah worked as an interpreter, scout and messenger for the United States Army during the Bannock War of 1878. In 1883 Sarah Winnemucca published the first autobiography written by a Native American woman,[3] based on hundreds of lectures she'd given in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic. It has been described as one of the most enduring ethno-historical books written by an American Indian.
On September 16, 1868, the Central Pacific Railroad reached Winnemucca, and was officially opened on October 1 of that year. It was on the First Transcontinental Railroad. It was part of the transcontinental line.
Basque immigrants worked as sheep-herders starting in the mid-19th century. In honor of this heritage, Winnemucca hosts an annual Basque Festival.
On September 19, 1900, Butch Cassidy's gang robbed the First National Bank of Winnemucca of $32,640.
Winnemucca's brothel district, while smaller now than in the 1980s, is known as The Line or The Ring Circle, based on the layout of the street where the brothels are located.[citation needed] Sex workers in the town must register their vehicles with the local police.
According to a billboard along State Route 140 (the Winnemucca to the Sea Highway), Winnemucca styles itself The City of Paved Streets.
Winnemucca is home to the Buckaroo Hall of Fame and Heritage Museum. It is also the headquarters of the Flawedcast Network.
Chinatown
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Winnemucca had a vibrant Chinatown. The Chinese originally came to the area as workers on the transcontinental Central Pacific Railroad, which reached Winnemucca in 1868. Some remained or returned to settle. During the 1890s, around 400 Chinese formed a community in the town. Among their prominent buildings was the Joss House on Baud Street, a place of worship and celebration. In 1911 the community was visited by Sun Yat-Sen, later to become Chinese president. He was on a fund-raising tour of the United States to help the Xinhai Revolution.[6] The Joss House, the last structure associated with Chinatown, was demolished on March 8, 1955, by order of the Winnemucca City Council.

Learn about JAG Nevada:
JAG Nevada Story
Governor Brian Sandoval, in his 2013 State of the State address, pledged to bring JAG to Nevada after learning about the impact of the model on youth of promise in other states where JAG student graduation rates exceeded state and national graduation rates. As a champion for education who has led Nevada in becoming the fastest improving school system in the nation, Governor Sandoval proposed funding for JAG as a key strategy to reduce the dropout rate and increase employment rate for youth in Nevada.
At that time, the state was in the throes of deep economic recession, and JAG was one of the few new enhancements the Governor proposed over the next biennium as an investment for Nevada’s youth of promise.
In the fall of 2013, the JAG nonprofit was established under the leadership of Dale Erquiaga and Frank Woodbeck, two of Governor Sandoval’s cabinet members. In February 2014, Dr. René Cantú Jr. was appointed Executive Director to launch JAG Nevada statewide. From his hire as the first employee of JAG in 2014, the nonprofit today employs over 70 dedicated educators and support staff who are helping change the lives of youth through the implementation of the JAG model across Nevada. In October, 2014, Governor Sandoval appointed the 26 inaugural members of the JAG board of directors and conducted the inaugural meeting. Drawing from some of the brightest minds in the state, the Governor appointed a majority of members from the private sector as well as representatives from K-12.
Since inception, JAG has helped change the lives of almost 10,000 students in Nevada. This growth was accomplished with state government and private enterprise joining together to create a diverse funding base for a program that yields 94% plus graduation rates and cuts youth unemployment in half among youth participants. Strada Education Network, AT&T, and MGM Resorts International have joined in funding this expanded effort across Nevada
Management Team
Led by Executive Director Cantú, the management team is responsible for carrying out the business of the organization, ensuring that the strategic direction set forth by the board of directors is followed, and confirming that the fiscal and programmatic elements of the program are carried out efficiently and effectively. Dr. Cantú is assisted by the Director of Finance and Operations, Debbie Tarantino, whose main role is to ensure that the organization operates in a fiscally efficient manner that complies with generally accepted accounting principles. Dr. Cantú and Ms. Tarantino have assembled a dynamic, results-driven team, whose performance is best demonstrated by the stellar outcomes of the organization.
Oversight of the program in a geographically vast state like Nevada necessitated that two offices be established to conduct the business of the nonprofit. The office where the executive director resides is located on the Charleston campus of College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas. A satellite office located in Reno houses JAG’s Director of Business Development, JAG Coordinator and Education to Employment (E2E) Facilitator who provide service and support to the programs in Western and rural Nevada..
The state of Nevada has been organized into 3 distinct regions for the purpose of meeting the local needs of the communities JAG Nevada serves. Region 1 includes western Nevada communities including Reno, Sparks, Carson City, Hawthorne and Fernley. Region 2 encompasses the largest geographic region and includes West Wendover, White Pine, McDermitt and Panaca. Region 3 is comprised entirely of schools in the Clark County School District and includes the communities of Henderson, Moapa Valley, Mesquite and Las Vegas.
School Advisory Committee
Each school principal assigns an advisory committee, which will assist the JAG Specialist in the recruitment of students who meet program criteria. Prior to hiring the JAG Specialist, the principal and members of the advisory committee work in concert with the JAG Nevada management team to recruit, interview and select the JAG Specialist. By interviewing and hiring the JAG Specialist jointly, the school administration develops a sense of ownership over the JAG Nevada program in their community.

NDOT Launches Sponsor-A-Highway!
NDOT SPONSOR-A-HIGHWAY PROGRAM LAUNCHES
Carson City, Nev. – Drivers will see enhanced roadside debris removal and sponsorship signs on more than twenty miles of Reno-area highway with the start of the Nevada Department of Transportation’s revamped sponsor-a-highway litter removal program. The program joins existing NDOT litter removal to help keep roadways clean at a cost savings to taxpayers.
One-mile highway segments have been sponsored on twenty miles of Reno/Sparks and Carson City freeways, including Interstate 80 through the Verdi/Mogul and Sparks/Lockwood areas. Roadside signs are being installed noting the sponsorship, and sponsored freeway segments will begin being cleaned on a regularly-scheduled basis.
Through the program, sponsoring businesses receive a roadside sign seen by as many as 72,000 drivers daily to recognize their sponsorship and community involvement. Meanwhile, the sponsorship money funds frequent litter removal by experienced and safety-trained, attired and equipped contract workers to help ensure roadway safety. The Reno-area program resurrects a previous service that was discontinued during major I-80, I-580 and U.S. 395 construction projects which made sponsored trash removal infeasible.
The service complements ongoing NDOT maintenance efforts to keep area highways clean. In a recent one-year period, NDOT maintenance crews removed 1,510 cubic yards of debris and spent 4,120 man hours removing trash and debris on Interstate 80 in Reno.
“Our crews are dedicated to the safety of Nevada roads,” NDOT District Engineer Thor Dyson explained. “In Reno, we have a patrol vehicle traveling the interstates throughout the day to remove any roadside debris, from couches to smaller items, which could become a traffic hazard. We’ll continue these important safety patrols, along with freeway street sweeping, but this sponsor-a-highway service will ultimately free up staff time for other important road maintenance tasks.”
By reducing litter removal by NDOT maintenance crews, NDOT currently saves an estimated $500,000 each year through sponsored litter removal of approximately 200 segments of state road in the Las Vegas area.
The Reno-area program complements the local efforts of Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful's Adopt-A-Spot program. Businesses or groups interested in adopting Reno or Sparks areas not along an NDOT road are encouraged to contact Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful at (775) 851-5185.
Interested businesses can still sign up to sponsor litter removal on available highway segments by contacting (800) 200-0003.
Drivers are reminded to always drive cautiously in areas of road work or litter removal, and are encouraged to secure items inside or in the back of their vehicles to reduce potential roadside trash and debris.
