Today we are rushing to the Dunedin Railway Station because today we are taking the train on the Taieri Gorge Railway with Dunedin Railways!
The day starts at Dunedin’s most-photographed building, the Dunedin Railway Station, and we jump on board the vintage Taieri Gorge Train in Dunedin. It’s one of three train journeys in Dunedin.
Like the name suggest, the Taieri Gorge Railway takes us along the Taieri River with lots of tunnels and viaducts along the way. Not to mention the views of this scenic train journey in New Zealand. If you’re wanting to take the train in New Zealand then the Dunedin Railways is worth considering.
Taking the train in Dunedin on the Taieri Gorge Railway brings up all the way through rural landscape to Pukerangi which is our turnaround point where we get to enjoy the train journey all over again. The activity is full day activity in Dunedin and also a great thing to do on a rainy day in Dunedin.
So what you think of the Taieri Gorge Railway? Would you add it to your Dunedin travel itinerary? LUK in the comments.

Today we’re taking the TranzAlpine Train in New Zealand! It’s considered one of the world’s most scenic train trips. Watch this video to see what it’s like to take a return journey with the KiwiRail TranzAlpine Train between Christchurch and Greymouth. It’s one of the great ways to travel across the South Island.
Admittedly, there is not much in the way of train travel in New Zealand, but with what New Zealand trains they do have, they are pretty amazing. The New Zealand TranzAlpine goes from Christchurch to Greymouth where the train goes through Arthur’s Pass National Park in the Southern Alps. The Arthur’s Pass train station is one of the stops before travelling through the Otira Tunnel, which is 8.5km long.
So what do you think of this South Island train journey? Would you add the Christchurch Greymouth Train / Greymouth Christchurch train to your South Island travel itinerary? Would you use this way to travel the South Island? LUK in the comments.

Trip of a Lifetime - Taieri Gorge Railway (HD)
New Zealand is centered in the Pacific Ocean and is 2 islands separated by a very large river called the Cook Strait. These islands are known as the North Island and the South Island. In the South Island we go look at New Zealand’s 4th biggest city, Dunedin. This city is famous for its city heritage. Today we look at one of the main tourist attractions in the city. Today we ride behind Dunedin Railway’s Taieri Gorge Railway excursion train which runs from Dunedin through the Taieri Gorge to Pukerangi centered near Central Otago. The line travels through some spectacular scenery and passes through many narrow tunnels, climbs steep grades and crosses over high constructed viaducts. Dunedin Railways own and operate 6 DJ class diesel locomotives built in Japan from the late 1960’s and operate a variety of passenger carriages dating from the old wooden cars in the 1920’s, to the more modern and recently refurbished carriages built as far back as the 1930’s. These carriages used to be used on daily express trains. This is a basic guideline of the trip including highlights of the excursion, on board features and a look at the impressive Dunedin Railway Station built in 1906. This railway is one of the world’s great train trips. Take a look at Dunedin Railway’s website at for more information on their scenic train trips and bookings. Hope you enjoy this video and make sure when you’re next in Dunedin you get a chance to go for a ride on the Taieri Gorge Railway!

Driver’s Eye View - Dunedin Railways - The Seasider - Dunedin to Waitati
Dunedin is one of the “must visit” places on New Zealand’s South Island. There is the highly scenic “Otago Peninsula” with penguins, albatross, New Zealand fur seals and much more to see, as well as two world class train rides starting from Dunedin’s magnificent station on most days.
In this video we enjoy awesome vistas across pristine sandy beaches normally reserved for the driver/engineer as our train makes its way along a narrow ledge cut into cliffs high above the turquoise sea and white sandy beaches far below.
I owe a massive thank you to Dunedin Railways for allowing me to place a camera in the driver’s cab for both the outward and return legs between Dunedin and Waitati.
I’ve just read about the tours offered by Dunedin Railways, they take New Zealand rail based holidays seriously, not just the stunning Taieri Gorge line, but the whole of the South Island. Please click on this link to see how Dunedin Railways can show you the scenery only rail passengers get to see -
Don’t tell my wife, but now I’ve seen the holidays on offer, I’m already planning a return trip to South Island.

Taieri Gorge Railway - Scenic Rail Tour, Dunedin to Pukerangi Station. Redux
Taieri Gorge Railway - Scenic Rail Tour, Dunedin to Pukerangi Station.
The Taieri Gorge Railway is a world famous train journey into the spectacular Central Otago Hinterland, Duration is 4 hrs return and a Distance of 116 km.
Operated by Dunedin Railways, it is one of the world’s great train trips and one of Dunedin’s top attractions as well as New Zealand's longest tourist railway - an experience not to be missed.
Combine a touch of history with a touch of magic and the result is some of New Zealand’s best scenic railway journeys. The Taieri Gorge Railway travels through the spectacular Taieri River Gorge, offering amazing views and gives a fascinating insight into the building of the railway line and life of those hardy pioneers.
Departing from Dunedin’s beautiful railway station the Taieri Gorge Railway begins its scenic journey into some of New Zealand’s most ever-changing, spectacular and iconic scenery. The train travels through the Southern parts of Dunedin city until it arrives at Wingatui junction where it turns off onto the Taieri branch. From here the train sneaks across the Taieri Plains and climbs into the Taieri Gorge, a narrow and deep gorge carved out over aeons by the ancient Taieri River.
The train negotiates the gorge with ease as it travels through ten tunnels and over countless bridges and viaducts.
The natural wonders combined with the challenge of man made engineering will leave you amazed, but somehow the railway blends into the natural environment perfectly. It is a wonderful example of the sheer determination of early railway pioneers.
The train will stop or slow down at various scenic points along the way for photos where you can disembark and stretch your legs and enjoy the best of the beauty, peace and quiet that nature has to offer. Stand on the open air platforms while the train moves or enjoy a quiet drink and food from the on board cafe, while the train manager tells the story of the nature and history of the area in an entertaining and informative live commentary.
The Taieri Gorge is located on the Taieri River, in the South Island of New Zealand. It is a deep canyon carved by the Taieri River on the middle stage of its journey from Central Otago to the Pacific Ocean, between the high plateau of the Maniototo and the coastal Taieri Plains. The gorge is over 40 kilometres (25 mi) long and stretches from near Pukerangi to southeast of Outram. A walking track leads from Outram into the southern end of the gorge. For the upper 25 kilometres (16 mi) of the gorge, upstream from the Wingatui Viaduct, the Taieri Gorge Railway runs alongside (and considerably above) the river.

Taieri Gorge Railway Dunedin New Zealand
Dunedin, New Zealand
We took the train ride when our cruise ship (Voyager of the Seas) docked in Dunedin. The train we took went all the way to Middlemarch, which felt like the middle of nowhere.
It was a very good trip. I certainly hadn't seen anything like this gorge before. My kids loved it.
