Uluwehi Falls (aka Secret Falls) - Kayak & Hike, Kapa'a, HI - (March 2019)
One of the few planned activities we had on our Kauai trip was a kayak and hike tour to Secret Falls. The obvious thing to note on this adventure is that there is nothing secret about these falls anymore and is a well-known tourist destination with many companies offering guided tours at a very reasonable price.
We lucked out big time as the weather was great and had been dry for a few days so the ~1.5-mile trail to the falls was very easy with looks of spectacular scenery. The falls themselves are beautiful but be warned that the water at the base of the falls is MUCH colder than you would expect (and this coming from a Pacific Northwest perspective).
The guide company we used was Kauai Kayak Adventures. Thomas was our guide and was very insightful on the local history of the area and the ecology of Hawaii. We would definitely recommend them to any of our followers who find themselves in Kauai. Link to there website can be found below.

Kapaa Kauai Hawaii
Kapa’a sits along Kauai’s eastern Royal Coconut Coast where pineapple and sugar plantations were once abundant.
The community lies in the shadow of Nounou Mountain, also known as Sleeping Giant. Catch it at the right angle and mountain looks like a man lying on his back. It’s home to three of the east side’s many hiking trails, with views that stretch over Kalepa Ridge, Kapa’a Town, and Wailua Bay. Ho’opi’i Falls is also popular with residents, where jungle waterfalls lead to a natural pool with a rope swing, and you can also visit the fern grotto and Secret Falls on a kayak down Wailua River. Surfing, sunbathing and family cookouts are a constant at Kealia Beach and Lydgate Beach Park, both of which are lifeguarded.
Kapa’a Beach Park is one of five parks in the area and is home to soccer games and community events like the Coconut Festival and part of the town’s monthly First Saturdays in Old Kapa’a Town. That’s when the town’s many shops, eateries and food trucks open their doors for a street party with local artisans and musicians.
Home to the famous Coco Palms hotel, frequented by stars like Elvis Presley, the east side was also the home of Kauai’s high chiefs and archeological sites tell their story down the Wailua River ending at a Hauola pu’uhonua (or place of refuge) at the river mouth in Lydgate Park.

Lava blocked our way! | #32 Travel Guide, Hawaii
The Hawaiian Islands are volcanic in origin and as Big Island has the most volcanoes of them all we made it our mission to find glowing lava. Check out our video to see if we succeeded and what other great things we found on the biggest of the Hawaiian Islands.
Search for Tropical gardens:
The southern tip of the island is full of lush rainforest. Some of it so pristine, that you fear to destroy its equilibrium if you simply touch it. In harsh contrast to this you can find the lava fields right next to it. About a year ago was the last outbreak of one of the five volcanoes and this one destroyed more than 700 buildings and structures and forced more than 2’000 people to relocate. One of the streets is still blocked by solidified lava.
Search for Waterfalls:
There are many waterfalls worth visiting on the biggest of the Hawaiian islands. Two of them are the Rainbow falls and the Akaka falls. We visited the Rainbow falls first and after waiting long enough, there was enough sun, to make the rainbow appear. The Akaka falls don’t have a rainbow but are, with their 132m of free fall more than twice as high as the Niagara falls.
Search for Whales:
The south-west part of the island offers the best whale watching possibilities. We just arrived at one of those spots, when we saw a relatively large group of people with telescope lenses. We immediately installed ourselves and managed to see a humpback whale jump. We witnessed three big jumps and got it all on camera. All this happened quite far away from us, we needed all the zoom we had, but it was still a unique experience.
Search for Petroglyphs:
Petroglyphs are stone carvings created by the ancient Hawaiians. Their exact meaning is not known but they show events like birth and other major events and most of the carvings are placed towards the volcano. Possibly they were meant to calm down the mountain. Close to the petroglyphs is a black and white beach. It is colored that way because the black volcano stones mix with white remains of the corals.
Search for Dolphins:
There is a place at the west coast that rents out kayaks. And with one of those we paddled back and forth in a small bay on the search for dolphins. After some rounds we needed a break and therefore continued to the Captain Cook monument where we went snorkeling. It is probably the best snorkeling spot on the island as the corrals look super healthy and there are many colorful fishes including needle fishes.
Only a short drive further was 2-step, the second-best snorkeling spot on the island and even before we had arrived at the water we were told to hurry as there were dolphins swimming with the snorkelers. We made ourselves ready as fast as we could and swam quite a distance to reach the point we were told. In the beginning nothing happened, but after a while they showed up. First, we saw them deep down, but then they came up and swam next to us. It was absolutely magical. And as they are called spinner dolphins, one of them was jumping out of the water and doing his pirouettes.
Search for Lava:
Even though there was no more glowing lava to see in the Volcano NP, it was still a super interesting trip to do. We learned a lot about the five big volcanoes on Big Island and the recent eruption. After the introduction and inspection of some steam coming off the ground, we followed the street all the way down to the ocean. But first we took another stop at one of the craters and searched for Pele’s tears. Those tears are black and shiny and can be found on the ground when looking closely.
Search for snow on the highest mountain in the world:
No, we are not talking about Mt. Everest, we are talking about Mauna Kea. Measured from the ground of the ocean this mountain is more than 10’000 meters high. We started in Hilo on zero meters and drove all the way up to the top of the mountain. We started in the tropical warmth of the coast, then passed the rainy and foggy area in the middle, then warm again and then freezing cold on the summit.
But driving up there was probably the best thing we had done in a long time. The view was simply mind blowing and all the telescopes up there looked fantastic during sunset. And btw. a car with AWD is absolutely sufficient to drive the little piece of unpaved road on the way to the top.
We hope we could inspire you to travel the Big Island. If you like the video give us a thumb up and subscribe to our channel so you won’t miss our next episode. Because on this one we will search for whales on Maui. And explore our other channels:

Amazing NaPali Coast View from Awa'awapuhi Kauai Hiking Adventures
A truly spectacular view (on a windy day), featuring the NaPali Coast of Kauai filmed from the entrance to Awa'awapuhi Valley. Kalalau Beach is seen clearly as well as waterfalls and ancient rock wall terraces. To access this point one must first Kayak the NaPali Coast, than jump off the reef to swim and land on a rock beach, finally we hike along Kauai's rugged NaPali Coastline following Mountain Goat Trail to Reach the Gateway to Awa'awapuhi. This is a trip that I took solo in the summer of 2007... What an amazing journey!!!

Island Of Kauai, Hawaii (HD)
Kauai, The Garden Island, is aptly named so with lush tropical growth everywhere you look. Coffee beans, bananas, plantains, palm dates, papayas, and coconuts, are just some of the fruits you will pass by on a leisurely drive from one end of the island to another.
This beautiful spot on Earth has definitely earned it's position in the top 3 spots I have seen. If you ever get the chance to go, do not hesitate! You will not regret it.

Island Comfort Sponsors First Boogie Board Classic
We had the privilege to be title sponsors of the first annual Garden Island Boogie Board Classic on Kauai. Such an amazing event here on the beautiful Hawaiian Island where people come together to enjoy fellowship, the ocean breeze and the waves. This event is special to us because we had a chance to invest on a vision that supports local communities, specifically the younger generation on Kauai.
