Rainbow Warrior, Cavallii Islands, Bay of Islands, New Zealand
The Rainbow Warrior was Greenpeace’s flagship. On its way to protest France’s nuclear testing on the Mururoa Atoll when it was sunk by French saboteurs on July 10, 1985, in Auckland Harbour.
After the bombing Greenpeace gifted the Warrior to the sea and she now lies as an artificial reef in the Cavallii Islands, a refuge for the marine life she was sunk trying to protect. At a max depth of 26m the Warrior is now home to a huge variety of aquatic life and is a world renowned dive site.
The Warrior is an one of the world’s premier wreck dives, and truly is the ‘Jewel of the North’. “When man has destroyed the world through his greed, the Warriors of the Rainbow will arise to save it again”. (

Rainbow Warrior Dive Trip
The Rainbow Warrior rests off the coast of the Bay of Islands in the North Island of New Zealand. On the 10th of July 1985 the Greenpeace ship was rigged with explosives by the French foreign intelligence services as a retaliation for protests by Greenpeace against French nuclear testing. Tragically photographer Fernando Pereira drowned on the sinking ship. We visited her on the 16th of February 2019 and she's full of life and serving as a wee artificial reef. This Kiwi icon is definitely worth a visit.

Our visit to New Zealand in 2010
After a short visit to Australia we flew to Auckland New Zealand the plan was to visit some friends and explore North Island. First port of call was Marsden Wharf where Rainbow Warrior was sunk allegedly by the French Secret Service. We also visited the Sky Tower and too the boat cruise.
We then headed out to our friend’s ’little place’ called the Ngunguru Peninsula. Then it was north to The Bay of Islands and a ride out to sea to watch the Dolphins and cruse the water that Jacque Cousteau’s Calypso introduced me (and many others) to as a boy on B/W TV. Then on to 90 Mile beach for a photo session with my lovely wife, before coming home.
