We have visited Rainham Marshes in December 2014 for Aerial Filming. Thanks to Terry Robinson (Office Manager) and Nicole Khan (Warden).
Rainham Marshes is an RSPB nature reserve to the east of London, adjacent to the Thames Estuary in Purfleet, Thurrock and the London Borough of Havering. In 2000, the area of land was bought from the Ministry of Defence, who used it as a test firing range. With no activity for several years, the nature reserve was officially opened to the public in 2006. It has maintained much of its Medieval landscape, and is the largest area of wetland on the upper parts of the Thames Estuary.
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) is a charitable organisation registered in England and Wales and in Scotland. It was founded as the Plumage League in 1889 by Emily Williamson. It works to promote conservation and protection of birds and the wider environment through public awareness campaigns, petitions and through the operation of nature reserves throughout the United Kingdom.
The RSPB has over 1300 employees, 18 000 volunteers and more than 1 million members (including 195,000 youth members), making it the largest wildlife conservation charity in Europe. The RSPB has many local groups and maintains 200 nature reserves.

Rainham Marshes opens wildlife centre
This Easter (Saturday 11th April 2009) the RSPB-protected Rainham Marshes nature reserve in East London is opening the doors on a new half a million pound education facility, just as up to 80 species of birds are expected to arrive in Britain.
The project has seen three old four-tonne shipping containers converted into state-of the-art discovery centres complete with observation platforms in front of a newly constructed area of wetland with a dedicated kingfisher sandbank. It has been timed to coincide with the peak in the migration season when Swallows, Housemartins, Cuckoos and Wheateaters, among others, are expected to arrive to nest in the area.
Forming part of the regeneration of East London ahead of London 2012, the development of Rainham Marshes has been designed to open up the nature reserve for children and families. It is part of an ambition to improve outside spaces along a 70km stretch from the Isle of Dogs to Southend-on-Sea and takes the Thames Gateway area one step closer to becoming the UKs first eco-region .
Funded by the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation (LTGDC) and other partners, the £500,000 improvements to the nature reserve includes the construction of an underwater marshland aquarium and newly built boardwalks from which children can go pond-dipping to explore what lies beneath the murky water.
The project is expected to see 5,000 school children and 60,000 visitors using the discovery centre every year.

The reserve is home to a diverse range of bird species, wetland plants and insects. It also has one of the most dense water vole populations in the country. In December 2005, the site was visited by a sociable lapwing; over 1,700 people visited the reserve to see this bird. Late in the bird's stay, four penduline tits were also found at the site. Entrance to the site is free to residents of Thurrock and the London Borough of Havering. The site is home to an environmentally friendly visitor centre which features solar panels, rainwater harvesting, natural light and ventilation and a ground heat exchange system. This visitor centre, completed in 2006 at a cost £2 million, was designed by van Heyningen and Haward Architects The building won six awards for its BREEAM sustainable design, including a Green Apple Award, Regeneration and Renewal Award and a Royal Institute of British Architects National Award. The site is part (77% according to a BBC article) of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) called Inner Thames Marshes, and the part which is in the London Borough of Havering has been designated by the council as a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation called Wennington, Aveley and Rainham Marshes. The area west of a drain running south from Brookway is a Local Nature Reserve (LNR), as well as being part of the SSSI. South of the A13 road the LNR is part of the RSPB reserve, while the northern part is managed by Havering Council.

Kingfisher at Rainham Marshes RSPB, May 2013
To everyone's great pleasure, it appears that Kingfishers have chosen to nest in the man-made bank in front of RSPB Rainham Marshes' Marshland Discovery Zone hide.
The Kingfisher is Schedule 1 bird, so the site has, quite rightly, taken steps to avoid disturbance - while offering visitors every chance to see the birds. These include camouflage netting over the window, restricted opening hours for the hide, and continuous supervision in the hide to ensure that noise is kept down, and that the camouflage netting is not moved.
Here's just a short video of the male bird perched not far from the nest hole. Out-of-shot, the female emerges from the hole. As she flies past him, he calls to her. After a few seconds, he leaves his perch to enter the nest.
Sorry there's no sound, but this was shot through the thick glass of a window!

Birdwatching by Numbers - RSPB Rainham Marsh
A first visit to the RSPB Rainham Marsh Reserve, now one of the RSPB's flagship sites. Excellently laid out with Shop, Cafe, Toilets etc. A surprise discovery was the collection of artwork halfway round the reserve. 100 years ago this site was an army shooting range, and evidence of it can still be seen. A very interesting place!
