Raizan Sennyoji Daihioin Temple - Autumn Colors
Last year we went to Raizan Sennyoji Daihioin Temple for some filming fun with friends. It's only about 30-40min away from Fukuoka city and it's a fantastic place to experience a Japanese temple. In the fall it's especially special as all the local trees are vibrant with an array of colors.
Filming wise you don't need permission but due be aware a tripod is not allowed and you cannot film inside the praying area due to privacy.

We took a 3 hour train to get to Hakata to meet up with a college friend who lives there. Laura-Mae ended up staying in Japan after her years in the JET program and lives in Itoshima. Come with us as we wander through beaches, mountain shrines, and the most green scenery in the Japanese countryside. It was so beautiful!

Love Song of the Japanese Cranes, Part 1: Raizan Sennyoji Temple
This excerpt from Love Song of the Japanese Cranes by Glenna Burmer was inspired by visits to Kyushu's Raizan Sennyoji Daihioin Temple. The music was composed by Glenna for the Symphonic Stories concert (BurmerMusic.com), featuring the Silk Strings Koto Ensemble, and the Northwest Sinfonia conducted by David Sabee. Photos were taken by Glenna and her son Mark during two visits to the temple, once on New Year's Day for the ceremony, and once in the summer. Founded by an Indian Buddhist monk, Raizan Sennyoji Daihioin was the main prayer temple against the mongol invasions of the Kamakura period, and is famous for its many Buddhist statues, including the hundreds of stone carvings representing each of the human emotions.

Long distance roadrunners decide to do some mountain trailing. First by public transport (the departure time of the first morning bus slows us down) to Mt Raizan.

雷山千如寺大悲王院 Main Hall Sennyo-ji's big maple trees Sennyo-ji is a Shingon temple in Itoshima
雷山千如寺大悲王院
Sennyo-ji (千如寺) is a Shingon temple in Itoshima, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. Its honorary sangō prefix is Sennyo-ji Daihiō-in (千如寺大悲王院). It is also referred to as Raizan Kannon (雷山観音).
According to the legend, Sennyo-ji was founded in the Nara period by Seiga, who came from India as a priest during the period.[1]
Due to its position in the north overlooking the Sea of Genkai, it has been expected from the shogunate as a prayer temple of the foremost line against the Mongol invasions of Japan during the Kamakura period. In its heyday has been said to be lined up to 300 priest living quarters around the temple. Sennyo-ji is a general term of this temple, and it is also referred to as the priest's lodge that was located next to the middle sanctuary, the present day site of Ikazuchi-jinja. The wooden Avalokiteśvara statue is the subject of mountainous faith that has been enshrined in the main hall.
Afterwards the priest living quarters were ruined during the long war between Muromachi and Sengoku periods, there only remains the priest's lodge. In 1573, however, the main hall was founded by Kuroda Tsugutaka, the 6th feudal lord of Kuroda clan. Big maple trees, which has been designated as a natural monument of Fukuoka prefecture, has been said to be planted by him.
Mount Rai has two sanctuaries, one at the middle of the mountain and one at its peak. The middle sanctuary was founded in honor of Emperor Suinin whom he is conventionally considered to have reigned from 29 BC to AD 70. Both sanctuaries have been governed by the temple until the Edo period. However, the priest's lodge in the middle sanctuary was abolished by the separation of Shinto from Buddhism, introduced after the Meiji Restoration. Cultural properties, such as Buddha statues including the main Buddha and the ancient documents, were moved to the main hall.
The temple is also known for being a great place for cherry blossom viewing in the spring, and many people visit in the autumn to see the fall foliage.[

This temple was divided into daihiouin and sennyoji, and in 725 the sennyoji was opened by saint Kiyaga in response to the Emperor Shomu. Main is a huge mokuzou Sente Kannon Ritsuzou
When listening to the story, watching the Buddha statue, the mind calms down.This place is quietly quietly nestled in the mountains and makes you feel the old historical history.
