Raj Bhavan The Governor's House, Kolkata
Raj Bhavan is the official residence of the Governor of West Bengal, located in the state' capital city Kolkata. Built in 1803, it was known as the Government House in the pre-independence days.
Later after the transfer of power from the East India Company to the British Crown in 1858 it became the official residence of the Viceroy of India, shifting here from the Belvedere Estate. With the shifting of capital to Delhi in 1911 it became the official residence of Lieutenant Governor of Bengal. Since independence in 1947 it serves as the official residence of the Governor of West Bengal and came to be known as the Raj Bhavan, a name it shares with the official residences of other states' governors.

Dalhousie Square | BBD Bag - Heritage of Kolkata City
Dalhousie Square is one of the busiest localities of the Kolkata metropolis. Needless to say, it’s one of the significant places located at the heart of the city as well. There is an ancient square-shaped pond called ‘Lal Dighi’ and it’s quite popular among the Kolkatans. It is around this pond in the various directions most of the important building structures and landmarks of the city rest. To mention a few are the Writers’ Building (Mahakaran), G.P.O., Telephone Bhavan, Currency Building, India Post, Royal Insurance Building and Stephen House. Besides, the region is well-knitted with several private and government offices as well. The Reserve Bank of India (main branch) and the Hongkong Shanghai Bank deserve a mention here as well.
Even though the region is popular as the Dalhousie Square but today it’s even more popular by the name of BBD Bag. Actually, B. B. D. Bag is an acronym used for the names three great sons of Bengal, - Benoy, Badal and Dinesh Bag. Today, there is a railway station, bus terminus and a tram depot after the name (BBD Bag) in the area.
Visitors who come to Kolkata always make sure to visit the region firstly, because the neighborhood is well connected by the local railways, waterways, and roadways and secondly because it unfolds the nostalgia of the bygone era. The holy churches, ancient, and historical buildings carry the architectural appeal of the past decades. Besides, the Hooghly river bank, the Millennium Park, Raj Bhavan invite everyone to visit the place time and again.
The region is located at a walking distance away from the Dharmatala, Esplanade section of the city. However, the area is accessible by the local railways, buses, trams, and jetty services as well.

Kolkata is third-largest city and a daily festival of human existence, simultaneously noble and squalid, cultured and desperate, decidedly futuristic while splendid in decay. By its old spelling, Calcutta readily conjures images of human suffering to most Westerners – although that's not a complete picture of this 330-year-old metropolis. Locally, Kolkata is regarded as India’s intellectual, artistic and cultural capital. Although poverty is certainly apparent, the self-made middle class drives the city's core machinery, a nascent hipster culture thrives among its millennial residents and its dapper Bengali gentry frequent grand colonial-era clubs.
