Neelakurinji Blooms At Eravikulam National Park-Munnar 2018
A trip to Eravikulam national park near Munnar to see Neelakurinji flower which blooms every 12 years only. We also get to see lots of Nilgiri Tahr, Which is an endangered species and protected animal in the park. We visited there on 23/09/2018
Eravikulam national park is approx 8 Kms from Munnar town and private vehicles are allowed till the entrance of the park only. There are buses operated by the park to travel inside the park. We have to park our vehicles at the parking area and get the tickets from the ticket counter at the entrance. Ticket prices are ₹120, it includes the bus fare also. From the drop off point we can walk along the trail and enjoy the view of Neelakurinji and Nilgiri Tahr.

Munnar is a town in the Western Ghats mountain range in India's Kerala State A hill station and former resort for the British Raj elite.it is surrounded by rolling hills dotted with tea plantations established in the late 19th century. Geography The main body of the park consists of a high rolling hill plateau with a base elevation of about 2,000 m. The terrain consists of high altitude grasslands interspersed with sholas. Anamudi, 2,695 meters, the highest peak in India south of the Himalayas is inside this park. Many perennial streams criss-cross the park. They merge to form tributaries of the Periyar river in the west and of the Cauvery River in the east. See. Lakkom Water falls is in this region.
Twenty six species of mammals have been recorded in the park including the largest surviving population of Nilgiri tahr,[3] estimated at about 750 individuals. The other ungulates are lion-tailed macaques, gaur, Indian muntjac and sambar deer. Golden jackal, jungle cat, wild dog, dhole, leopard and tiger are the main predators. Some little-known animals such as Nilgiri langur, stripe-necked mongoose, Indian porcupine, Nilgiri marten, small clawed otter, ruddy mongoose, and dusky palm squirrel are also found.[4] Elephants make seasonal visits.
132 species of birds have been recorded which include endemics like black-and-orange flycatcher, Nilgiri pipit, Nilgiri wood pigeon, white bellied shortwing, Nilgiri flycatcher and Kerala laughingthrush.
Endemic butterflies confined to the shola-grass land ecosystem like the red disk bushbrown and Palni fourring are among the 101 species in the park.
19 species of amphibians have been recorded in the park.
Three major types of plant communities are found in the Park – grasslands, shrublands and forests. The terrain above 2000m is covered primarily by grasslands. However, there are numerous small patches of forests in hollows and gullies in these areas. The deeper valleys are extensively forested. Shrublands predominate along the bases of the cliffs and interspersed in rocky slab areas. The antibacterial Eupatorium glandulosum is found here.As this is monate forest vegetation many small mosses, lichen are also found here
Prior to 1971, the area was managed as a game preserve by the Kanan Devan Hills Produce Company. The government of Kerala resumed control in 1971 (Kannan Devan Hill Produce (Resumption of lands) Act, 1971), and declared the Eravikulam-Rajamala Wildlife Sanctuary in 1975 to protect the habitat of the endangered Nilgiri tahr. It became a National Park in 1978.

You should reach at least before 830 AM for an enjoyable journey to the park. Tickets are issued till 4:30 PM.

Eravikulam National Park is the first of its kind located in Munnar, Kerala. It is Kerala’s first national park. This park is famous for its collection of tahr. Nilgiri tahr is a goat like species that is endangered. One can easily spot tahr in this park. Some rare animals and endangered species of butterflies can be spotted here. The park is also famous for great view of tea plantation, rolling hills and neelakurunji. Neelakurunji is a blue colored kurunjiflower, which blooms once in 12 years. During the summer season, the valleys will be covered with blue carpet made of Neelakurunji. The park is also famous for Anamudipeak, which is the highest peak in South India.
