राजगड किल्ल्यावर छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराज यांच्या मराठी राज्याची पहिली राजधानी होती. मावळभागामध्ये राज्यविस्तार साध्य करण्यासाठी राजगड आणि तोरणा हे दोन्ही किल्ले मोक्याच्या ठिकाणी होते. तोरणा किल्ल्याचा बालेकिल्ला आकाराने लहान असल्यामुळे राजकीय केंद्र म्हणून हा किल्ला सोयीचा नव्हता. त्यामानाने राजगड दुर्गम असून त्याचा बालेकिल्ला बराच मोठा आहे. शिवाय राजगडाकडे कोणत्याही बाजूने येताना एखादी टेकडी किंवा नदी ओलांडावीच लागते. एवढी सुरक्षितता होती,म्हणून आपले राजकीय केंद्र म्हणून शिवाजी महाराजांनी राजगडाची निवड केली.

Rajgad (Ruling Fort) is a hill fort situated in the Pune district of Maharashtra, India. Formerly known as Murumdev, the fort was the capital of the Maratha Empire under the rule of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for almost 26 years, after which the capital was moved to the Raigad Fort. Treasures discovered from an adjacent fort Torna were used to completely build and fortify the Rajgad Fort.
The Rajgad Fort is located around 60 km (37 mi) to the south-west of Pune and about 15 km (9.3 mi) west of Nasrapur in the Sahyadris range. The fort lies 1,376 m (4,514 ft) above the sea level. The diameter of the base of the fort was about 40 km (25 mi) which made it difficult to lay siege on it, which added to its strategic value. The fort's ruins consist of palaces, water cisterns, and caves. This fort was built on a hill called Murumbadevi Dongar (Mountain of the Goddess Murumba). Rajgad boasts of the highest number of days stayed by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on any fort.

Rajgad is a fort located near Katraj. The height of Rajgad from sea level is 4250 feet and offers spectacular views of Sahyadri Mountains. One can see Sinhagad and Torna fort from Rajgad.
The best season to visit Rajgad is during the monsoons and the winter season. Trekking feels fantastic during the monsoons but trekkers should take precautions as the route gets very slippery.
Winter season is ideal for camping on the fort.

The fort has witnessed lots of historic events, including the birth of Shivaji's son Rajaram, the death of Shivaji's Queen Saibai, the return of Shivaji from Agra, the burial of Afzal Khan's head in the Mahadarwaja walls of Balle Killa, the strict words of Sonopant Dabir to Shivaji, and the Khandoji Khopade event.
This fort was also one of the 17 forts that Shivaji kept when he signed the Treaty of Purandar (1665) with the Rajput king Jai Singh in 1665 who was leading the Mughal forces. 23 other forts were handed over to the Mughals under this treaty.
Routes
One can climb the fort from numerous route from villages at the base of Rajgad,
1)starting from Gunjavne (Gunjavne Darwaja or Chor Darwaja both on Padmavati Machee, and a tough route to Chor Darwaja near Nedhe on Suvela Machi). Pali Darwaja is historically the main and easier route.
2) The route for Pali Darwaja is from Wajeghar-Pali.
3) From Chirmudi village (Chor Darwaja on Padmavati Machee), the route meets corresponding route from Gunjavne)
4) From village Bhutunde (Alu Darwaja on Sanjeevani Machee via Dhanghar Vada)
5) From Male (Chor Darwaja on Kaleshwari Buruj, Suvela Machee).
6) From route coming from Budhla Machee of Torna comes through a connecting ridge to Alu Darwaja on Sanjeevani Machi.
