The formation of Central Zoo Authority in 1992 totally changed the scenario of the Indian zoos. They were transformed into scientific wildlife conservation centre. With a view of developing a zoo which will fulfil the objectives of naturalistic animal housing, conservation breeding, wildlife conservation education and research, a new site with a land area of 130 acres at Katraj was selected. The development work initiated in 1996. The new zoo inaugurated on 14th March 1999 and renamed as Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park and Wildlife Research centre. Initially, the infrastructure development in the form of naturalistic enclosures for the ungulates, primates, sloth bear, Royal Bengal tiger, Asian elephant etc. was established. The old reptile park established in 1986 was also merged with the zoo.
At present, the zoo is a home to around 66 species of wildlife fauna including mammals, birds and reptiles which represents the Western Ghat and Deccan plateau. The animals are being displayed in a spacious naturalistic enclosure in a thematic manner. Enclosure exhibits are developed simulating the animals naturalistic habitat where environment enrichment is focussed on considering animals behavioural need. Animal upkeep and health care have been taken care of establishing veterinary hospital equipped with advanced diagnostic tools and treatment facilities. The Preventive disease management protocol is being strictly followed to keep animals away from health ailments.
Today this zoo is being recognised as one of the model zoos in the country and visited by around eighteen lacks visitors annually. The basic amenities like resting sheds, toilets, drinking water fountains, information signages, wheelchairs for the disables persons are made available for the visitor’s ease. The battery operated car facility is available to ferry the visitors around the premises. To promote the wildlife conservation education towards the visitors and students at large different educational activities are also conducted on a regular basis where audiences are sensitised on various aspects of wildlife.
The zoo aims at its future expansion and the master plan for the next twenty years development is worked out wherein it is planned to develop new enclosures, upgrade visitors amenities, improve the existing infrastructure and procure new animals. In the existing animal collection the new species like Asiatic lion, jungle cat, leopard cat, rusty spotted cat, giant squirrel, mouse deer, fox, wild dog, hyena, lion-tailed macaque etc. will be incorporated and exhibits for the species will be established. The existing reptile section will be shifted to a new location where the animal exhibits will be made more attractive with the availability of modern glass barriers in the facility. The walkthrough aquatic bird aviary will be another attraction to come up as per the development plan. To propagate the wildlife conservation education in a scientific manner a nature interpretation centre is being developed and the facility will be with interactive displays and audiovisual aids. The ex situ breeding of the endangered wildlife species would be the another planned activity of future plan. The Malabar giant squirrel will be the species taken up for the planned ex situ conservation breeding. The visitor circulation has been planned to improve by developing service road for the animal facilities and constructing a bridge over the water body to minimise visitor’s walk.
To make a development plan comprehensive Zoo management is keen to add charismatic animal species like Zebra, Giraffe and the antelope species of African Savanna in the existing collection. The amendment proposal is likely to get the nod from the sanctioning authorities.
Pune Municipal Corporation is committed to making Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park a world-class zoo thereby focussing on the speedy execution of development plan, updating the animal facilities, infusing the newer technologies in animal health care and conservation breeding and concentrating the research pertaining to different aspects of wildlife.

Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park Pune | Katraj Zoo Pune | Snake Park Katraj Pune Maharashtra |
Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park / Katraj Snake Park / Katraj Zoo commonly known as the Rajiv Gandhi Zoo or Katraj Zoo, is located in Katraj, Pune district, Maharashtra State, India. It is managed by the Pune Municipal Corporation. The 130-acre (53 ha) zoo is divided into three parts: an animal orphanage, a snake park, and a zoo, and includes the 42-acre (17 ha) Katraj Lake.In 1953 the Pune Municipal Corporation created Peshwe Park on about 7 acres (2.8 ha) where Madhavrao Peshwe had established a private menagerie in 1770. Located in the heart of the city at the base of Parvati Hill, this zoo exhibited animals in traditional cages.
In 1986, Mr. Neelam Kumar Khaire (the first director of the park), with assistance from the Pune Municipal Corporation, created the Katraj Snake Park on land that was to become the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park.
In 1997, in order to create a more modern zoo in accordance with the guidelines of the Central Zoo Authority of India, the municipality selected a site in Katraj and started developing a new zoo. The zoo opened in 1999 as the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park & Wildlife Research Centre, and initially included only the reptile park, sambars, spotted deer, and monkeys. Although it took until 2005, all of the animals from Peshwe Park were eventually moved to the new site, and Peshwe Park was closed.
The park also incorporates a rescue centre for injured and orphaned animals. It has run an animal adoption scheme since October 2010
The zoo has collections of reptiles, mammals, and birds. Among mammals, the zoo has a white tiger and a male Bengal tiger named Tanaji. Other mammals at the zoo include leopard, sloth bears, sambhars, barking deer, blackbucks, monkeys, and elephants. Reptiles include Indian rock python, cobra, snakes, vipers, Indian crocodiles and Indian star tortoise and birds such as peafowl also feature.
The snake park has a large collection of snakes, reptiles, birds and turtles. There are over 22 species of snakes with 10 species of reptiles comprising more than 150 individuals. This includes a 13-foot-long king cobra. Information about the snakes is provided in Braille, as well as more conventional formats, and the park includes a library. The snake park has organized many snake festivals and snake awareness programs to clarify doubts and destroy fears about snakes. During Nag Panchami, the park arranges programs to discourage ill-treatment of snakes.

Rajiv Gandhi Zoo aka Katraj Zoo lake and Bird Sanctuary. Pune. India
Katraj is suburb of Pune in the Indian state of Maharashtra, and within the jurisdiction of Pune Municipal Corporation. Katraj is famous for its Peshwa-era (18th century) lake that supplied water to the city during that period. The village lies at the foot of the Katraj Ghat or mountain pass on the main National Highway 4 connecting Pune with places south of the city, such as Kolhapur and Bangalore. In recent decades area surrounding the lake and the village of Katraj became part the City of Pune. The former rural area is now surrounded by residential complexes. The lakeside hosts the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park. Bharti Vidyapeeth, a deemed university, has its main campus here. A large Jain temple was built here in late 20th century.
There are actually two lakes in Katraj: one attached to the Zoo and the other is this one, also called as Peshwa's Katraj Lake (as per Google Maps). This lake was beautified by the Pune Municipal Corporation and their efforts are praiseworthy.
The lake, though small, has an island, with a statue of Maratha warrior king, Shivaji and a large national flag on it and can be reached by boat (was closed when I visited). A path along the periphery is a good place for walkers and is also used by residents of surrounding areas to commute. Parking facilities are somewhat limited and one need not spend much time here.
