Rakiura - Stewart Island, New Zealand
Just twenty minutes by plane from Invercargill, or an hour by ferry from Bluff, Stewart Island / Rakiura is a place where you can experience lush rainforest, clear, clean water and abundant marine and bird life.
In 2002 the very qualities that make this a great place to treasure, were recognized in the formation of the Rakiura National Park, comprising 85% of the island's 1,570 sq. kilometers. The description of the island by naturalist Leonard Cockayne in 1909 as an actual piece of the primeval world is still relevant today.
Oban is the only settlement on the island and has a population of around 400 people. Despite having few shops in the township, nearly all items visitors require van be purchased from the town's general store. There are no bank or ATM facilities here.
Whether you come to enjoy the land and seascapes, view the wildlife, walk, boat, fish, dive, kayak, hunt or just relax, Stewart Island / Rakiura will be an experience that will draw you back here again and again.

New Zealand, 31th week: Stewart Island
After few days driving south I arrived to the southest point of the South Island of NZ, Bluff, from where I took a ferry to Stewart Island. In the 3rd island of NZ I did one of the greats walks of the country during 3 days and I had the opportunity to see wild kiwis as well as other wild animals.

A great white shark off Pukeokaoka Island, Rakiura
Fishing up plenty of blue cod (rawaru) off Pukeokaoka Island when all the albatross suddenly flew away from the boat; these are big birds & can quite easily swallow a 1kg fish given the chance. And then this big shark appears circling round us for 5 or 6 minutes before disappearing. Estimate length approx 3 half to 4 metres
Thanks to the Rawhiti for taking us out everything was delicious

Hennessy Hammocking Doughboy Rakiura
A video from the Back of Doughboy Hunting Block showing how quick it is to set up a Hennessy Hammock to get shelter from the sandflies.
You can sit in them like a swing so possible to use as a tree stand that you sleep in (with a harness on for Worksafes sake)
Its called the roaring forties for a reason the Hut is upwind - so CAMP DOWNWIND - We were just chilling at a vantage point waiting for last light to hunt.
You can see from the photos that the smallest Hennessy fly doesn't cut it. We used a big fly over both hammocks - the rain was horizontal. The larger asymmetrical fly copes on its own the small one is okay for showers and light rain.

107 Beached Pilot Whales Stewart Island Feb 2011
On the 20 February 2011, 107 pilot whales beached themselves at Mason's Bay, on the southwest coast of Stewart Island, New Zealand. The reason is unclear but intriguingly it took place just two day's before the 6.3 magnitude earthquake which struck Christchurch with such tragic consequences. Researchers are now actively investigating. It's absolutely heartbreaking.

Visiting Oban and Stewart Island
In October 2018, I went with my sisters and some friends to do the Rakiura Great Walk in Stewart Island, as well as visiting Ulva Island too. This is footage that was taken from the rest of the trip, mainly looking around Oban, where we saw a lot of kaka and tui birds. We also had a look in the Oban Presbyterian Church, which has a bit of a Norwegian story!
Oban is the main settlement on Stewart Island (Rakiura), the southernmost of the main three islands of New Zealand. Oban is located on Halfmoon Bay, and has aircraft connections with Invercargill and a ferry service to Bluff. The settlement was named after Oban in Scotland, (An t-Òban in Scottish Gaelic, meaning The Little Bay), due to the strong influence Scottish settlers had in the south of early colonial New Zealand. According to the March 2001 New Zealand census, the island's permanent resident population was 387 at that time. Newer estimates put the population at around 400.
