The Rakiura Track | Stewart Island, New Zealand
The Rakiura Track on Stewart Island/Rakiura is arguably the most remote of New Zealand's Department of Conservation's (DOC) Great Walks. Highlights of the track include navigating dense rainforest, combing remote beaches, and spotting awesome wildlife, including the Kiwi if you're lucky! A must see if you are in NZ! If you have the chance, you should totally take some time to explore the Ryan's Creek optional track, and Ulva Island. Footage in this video includes Oban, Maori Beach, Lee Bay, Port William campsite, Port William Hut, North Arm Campsite, North Arm Hut, and Ryan's Creek track, all Part of the Rakiura Track.

Rakiura - Stewart Island, New Zealand
Just twenty minutes by plane from Invercargill, or an hour by ferry from Bluff, Stewart Island / Rakiura is a place where you can experience lush rainforest, clear, clean water and abundant marine and bird life.
In 2002 the very qualities that make this a great place to treasure, were recognized in the formation of the Rakiura National Park, comprising 85% of the island's 1,570 sq. kilometers. The description of the island by naturalist Leonard Cockayne in 1909 as an actual piece of the primeval world is still relevant today.
Oban is the only settlement on the island and has a population of around 400 people. Despite having few shops in the township, nearly all items visitors require van be purchased from the town's general store. There are no bank or ATM facilities here.
Whether you come to enjoy the land and seascapes, view the wildlife, walk, boat, fish, dive, kayak, hunt or just relax, Stewart Island / Rakiura will be an experience that will draw you back here again and again.

Rakiura Great Walk, Stewart Island (Spring 2018)
This spring, I went with both my sisters and some friends, to hike to the Rakiura Track in the Rakiura National Park of Stewart Island (the most southern and smallest of the main three islands in New Zealand). It is one of the ten Great Walks in New Zealand, it takes three days to hike the whole track, and is 36 kilometres long. The circuit follows open coastline, as well as the forested interior. It passes sites of historical interest and introduces many of the common sea and forest birds of the island. There are two huts (Port William and North Arm) and three campsites (Maori Beach, Port William and North Arm) on the Rakiura Track.
Ceolskog is the solo folk metal project of Adam Helliwell from Hamilton, New Zealand. It is also the name given to his nature-themed YouTube channel. Ceol is an Irish word meaning music, and skog means forest in Norwegian and Swedish. No, I don't have a Patreon. Our Family Trip to Stewart Island. I took 1 - 4 second videos while we where there and simply ran them all together to create this video of our trip. The only editing I did was to shorten clips for the sake of not having to long a video.
Thanks for the trip guys!

-- About this video --
Today we are going to Stewart Island! The most popular way to get to Stewart Island is to take the ferry between Bluff and Oban. We hop on the ferry in Bluff with Real Journeys and start making our merry way over the Foveaux Strait to Oban, the one and only town in Stewart Island.
When we arrive, we check into the Stewart Island Backpackers then start exploring Oban. After getting some lunch and meeting some locals, we find a walking track along the coast of Oban, over some cliffs to a nice secluded beach called Bathing Beach. Bathing Beach is a beautiful golden sand beach. Although we are as far south as we’re ever likely to get, the beaches in Oban look like a tropical paradise.
We make our way back into Oban town and catch a movie and the one and only cinema on Stewart Island, the Bunkhouse Theatre. It’s a cosy boutique-style cinema showing one movie called A Local’s Tail giving the Stewart Island history from the perspective of a dog. It’s pretty hilarious and sums up Stewart Island life and humour nicely.
So what do you think of Oban, Stewart Island? Is it a New Zealand town worth visiting? LUK in the comments.
