Ram Setu - The bridge was first mentioned in the ancient Indian Sanskrit epic Ramayana of Valmiki. The name Rama's Bridge or Rama Setu (Sanskrit; setu: bridge) refers to the bridge built by the Vanara (ape men) army of Rama in Hindu theology with instructions from Nala,[5] which he used to reach Lanka and rescue his wife Sita from the Rakshasa king, Ravana.[4] The Ramayana attributes the building of this bridge to Rama in verse 2-22-76, naming it as Setubandhanam, a name that persists until today.[6]
The sea separating India and Sri Lanka is called Sethusamudram meaning Sea of the Bridge. Maps prepared by a Dutch cartographer in 1747, available at the Thanjavur Saraswathi Mahal Library show this area as Ramancoil, a colloquial form of the Tamil Raman Kovil (or Rama's Temple).[7] Another map of Mughal India prepared by J. Rennel in 1788 retrieved from the same library called this area as the area of the Rama Temple, referring to the temple dedicated to Rama at Rameswaram.[8] Many other maps in Schwartzberg's historical atlas[9][10] and other sources such as travel texts by Marco Polo call this area by various names such as Sethubandha and Sethubandha Rameswaram.
Dhanushkodi - According to the Hindu mythology Ramayana, Lord Rama built a bridge to connect India and Sri Lanka, in order to carry his troops. Rama marked the spot for the bridge with one end of his bow which later became Dhanushkodi meaning end of the bow.

Day Trip to Rameswaram | Rama Setu | Dhanushkoti
Hey friends! I'm back with yet another travel vlog. I was in Gulf of Mannar for two months working on a film. During my time there, I got to learn a lot about the marine life of India and its impact on fishing communities. Gulf of Mannar is a row of 21 islands between India and Sri Lanka, two of which include Rameswaram and Dhanushkoti!
These two destinations are hot tourist spots throughout the year. Rameswaram is known for its mythological affiliation with Lord Rama. We got to visit the exact location that is known to be the starting point of Lord Rama's bridge to rescue Sita (Rama Setu).
Additionally, we checked out the small and now deserted town of Dhanushkoti, a few kilometres away from Rameswaram. Only a few fishing families reside there today, despite the Government's attempts to evacuate them after the cyclone. Witnessing the southern most tip of India and the converging point of three seas: Arabian, Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean, is really something fantastic! I recommend you all to explore the beautiful Gulf of Mannar, that has a lot more to offer! For more details be sure to follow me on:

It is situated to the South-East of Pamban and is about 18 miles west of Talaimannar in Sri Lanka. The town was destroyed during the 1964 Rameswaram cyclone and remains uninhabited in the aftermath.
Adam's Bridge, also known as Rama's Bridge or Rama Setu, is a chain of limestone shoals, between Pamban Island, also known as Rameswaram Island, off the south-eastern coast of Tamil Nadu, India, and Mannar Island, off the north-western coast of Sri Lanka.
Rameswaram is a town on Pamban Island, in the southeast Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It’s known for Ramanathaswamy Temple, a Hindu pilgrimage site with ornate corridors, huge sculpted pillars and sacred water tanks. Devotees bathe in the waters of Agni Theertham, off the beach east of the temple. Gandamadana Parvatham is a hill with island views. A chakra (wheel) here is said to bear an imprint of Lord Rama’s feet.

Rameswaram is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Hindu Religion. It is believed that Lord Rama had worshiped this Jyotirlinga in order to win in the fight with Ravan. The temple is located very near to the sea (100 meters) in the island of Rameswaram. There are 22 teerthas or holy water sources inside the temple. You can buy a ticket of 25/- to bath in all these 22 teerthas inside the temple.
Agni Teertham- The sea near the temple (Bay of Bengal) is known as Agni Teertham which is also considered very sacred for bathing. Including these teerthas there are altogether 64 teerthas in Rameswaram.
Rama Teertham and Panchamukhi Hanuman- is about 2 kms from Rameswaram Temple by the side of the main road connecting the main temple. The water of this pond is believed to be very sacred by Hindus. There is panchamukhi Hanuman temple near Rama teertham where you will find lot of floating stones which were used to build sethubandha in the past.
Laxman Teertham is another ancient temple in Rameswaram about 1 km from Rama Teertham and 3 kms from main Jyotirlinga Temple. Near Laxman Teertham, there is Sita Teertham, a small pond which is almost dried up and filled with garbage.
Viloondi Teertham is about 8 kms from Rameswaram Temple, located in between Rameswaram Temple and Pamban Bride. The teertham is a sweet water well in the middle of sea water. According to mythological stories Rama shot an arrow to get sweet water at this place to quench the thirst of Sita and others.
Pambam bridge is another attraction of Rameswaram. This is India's first sea bridge constructed in 1914. It is about 2kms long and is also the longest sea bridge in India.
Vivekananda memorial is located near Kunthukal beach in Rameswaram. It is located on the south west side of Rameswaram Island which is about 15 kms from Rameswaram Temple and 8 kms from Pamban Beach. Apart from the memorial the other attraction here is Kunthukal Sea beach.
Jada Teertham or Jata Mukuta Teertham is one of the 64 teertham of Rameswaram. This is about 8 kms from Rameswaram temple on the way to Dhanuskodi. You have to walk about 200 meters from the road to reach this place. As per mythology, after completion of Lanka war with Ravana, Lord Rama washed his Jata or hair at this place.
Kodanda Ramar Temple or Bibhisan Temple is about 12 kms from Rameswaram main Temple near Dhanuskodi. The temple is sorrounded by sea water at all sides except a connecting road form the highway. It is a beautiful spot and a must visit if you are going to Rameswaram.
Dhanuskodi is a part of Sethubandha that is extended into the sea from Rameswaram towards Srilanka. The view of sea is different at different points in Dhanuskodi. While near Bibhisan temple there is less water and no waves, in Dhanuskodi beach there is deep water and high waves.

1. Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple
This is one of the very few temples in the history of India which is built in the Dravidian style architecture. Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple is famous for its collection of Lingas, which were made up of sand, salt, stone and other elements. According to stories, there were around 112 ponds here out of which only 12 are left. This popular tourist attraction in Rameshwaram with the second largest pillared corridor in the world is one of the must visit tourist places in Rameshwaram.
Worship Timings: 5 am to 1 pm & 3 pm to 9 pm
2. Kothandaramaswamy Temple
Situated in Dhanushkodi, Kothandaramaswamy temple is lined along the shallow beaches, historical ruminants, and vast horizons of the azure sea. One of the best tourist spots in Rameshwaram, this is a ruin of the temple described in Ramayana. This temple holding the deities of Rama, Lakshman, Sita & Hanuman is believed to be the residing spot of Vibhishana, the younger brother of Ravana.
Temple Timings: 6:30 am to 10:30 am & 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm
3. The five faced Hanuman Temple
Situated just 2 km from Rameshwaram Temple, this temple is famous for the five manifestations of Lord Hanuman and is listed among the most prestigious places to see in Rameshwaram. This famous idol is carved out of a large Senthooram Stone which was considered very precious in ancient times. The Hanuman Temple is said to house stones used to build the Rama Setu, the bridge built by Hanuman’s army of monkeys in order to rescue Goddess Sita from Lanka.
Timings: 6 am to 7 pm
4. Agni Theertham
One of the 64 sacred baths in India, Agni Theertham is always on the top of the list when talking about the best places to visit in Rameshwaram. It is believed that bathing in this sea will rid one of his/her sins and make them pure. Holistic rituals such as those for the dead ancestors are performed on the shores of this pristine beach. Pilgrims wishing to take a sacred bath are first supposed to take a dip here and then proceed for the bath inside the
Rameshwaram Temple.

5. Ariyaman Beach
The Ariyaman Beach, or the Kushi Beach, has an astounding width and length of about 150 m and 2 km respectively. Characterised by gentle waves and utmost cleanliness, this beach is perfect for a picnic with friends or family, which is why it is listed among the significant places to visit near Rameshwaram.
Distance from Rameshwaram: 27 km
6. Dhanuskodi Beach
Dhanuskodi lies in the southern tip of Rameshwaram and is bordered by the Bay of Bengal on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other, merging at the very tip of the beach, such that one can tell apart the high tides of the former from the low tides of the latter. The beach town was heavily populated prior to the devastation caused by storm of 1964. But now, with a population of merely 500 fishermen and their families, the town has been declared a ‘Ghost Town’ by the government, and is among the prominent places to visit in Rameshwaram.
8. Water Bird Sanctuary
Rameshwaram isn’t solely a religious spot. For all visitors who wish to explore something other than the temples, they can go to the Water Bird Sanctuary that is home to a lot of native as well as migratory water birds. Between October and January, the sanctuary turns into a battalion of migratory birds who flock here to breed and feed their offsprings. The sanctuary is located in the Ramanathapuram District and is indeed one of the most popular Rameshwaram tourist places.
Best Time to Visit: October to January
Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge & pamban bridge
The Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge or Pamban Bridge is a cantilever bridge on Palk Strait that boasts of being the first sea bridge of India and connects Rameshwaram Island with the Indian mainland. The bi-lane road next to the bridge allows one to get a clear view of this railway bridge and of its amazing double leaf bascule which raises itself to let ships pass from underneath it. Containing 143 pillars, each of which is 220 feet long and weighs 100 tonnes, the bridge is among the most fascinating places to see in Rameshwaram.

We srarted off our journey from Cabana Coral Reef Resort at around 6:15 in the morning. From Mandapam to access Rameswaram, one must cross the famous Pamban Riad Bridge or Pamban Rail Bridge. Pamban Bridge is the first sea bridge of India. We crossed the Pamban Bridge and entered the Rameswaram Municipality. We had to pay an entry fee of Rs. 100 for our car. We crossed the town and drove towards Dhanushkodi. Dhanushkodi is the southeastern tip of India. A couple of decades back Dhanushkodi was an ordinary fishing village. But a devastating cyclone destroyed the entire village and took several lives.Today it is an abandoned village in Tamil Nadu.
We continued to the end of the road and explored Dhanushkodi Rama Sethu Point which is also known as Rameswaram Rama Sethu Point. We looked far to the horizon to the southeast. We were trying to see Sri Lanka, but we could not. After an hour of exploration we returned. On our way back we stopped at the lost village of Rameswaram - Dhanushkodi. We saw the ruins of Dhanushkodi church and many other buildings including a school.
After the Ghost Village of Rameswaram, we drove back towards Rameswaram and stopped at Kothanda Ramar Temple near Dhanushkodi. Then we also visited Rameswaram Main Temple and many other smaller temples around. In one of the temples they were displaying floating stones. The truth of floating stones in Rameswaram is that they are not stones. What they show as stones are actually corals.
We then went to Dr. Abdul Kalam Memorial and returned via Pamban Bridge to our resort in Mandapam.
My selection of places to visit in Rameswaram are:
1. Dhanushkodi Rama sethu point
2. Dhanushkodi - lost village
3. Kothanda Ramar Temple
4. Rameswaram Temple
5. Rameswaram Agni Theertham
6. Pamban bridge
7. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Memorial
8. Mandapam Fishing Village
9. Mandapam Beach
10. Beaches on the way to Dhanushkodi

Dhanushkodi or Danushkodi (Tamil: தனுஷ்கோடி, 'end of the bow') is a ghost town at the south-eastern tip of Pamban Island of the Tamil Nadu state of India. Rameshwaram tour is incomplete without Dhanushkodi.
Dhanushkodi is situated to the South-East of Pamban. Danushkodi is about 18 miles (29 km) West of Talaimannar in Sri Lanka. The Dhanushkodi railway line running from Pamban Station was destroyed in the 1964 cyclone and a passenger train with over 100 passengers drowned in the sea.
I got a wonderful chance to visit Ramsethu point Dhanushkodi on my All India Ride.It was one my best travelling experiences to reach till the end point of Ramsethu Dhanushkodi.
Adam's Bridge also known as Rama's Bridge or Ram Setu is a chain of limestone shoals connecting the southern part of India with Srilanka. Considerable diversity of opinion and confusion exists about the nature and origin of this structure or how it was build. The bridge was first mentioned in the ancient Indian Sanskrit epic Ramayana of Valmiki. Adam's bridge and neighbouring areas like Rameswaram, Dhanushkodi are mentioned in the context of various legends in Ramayana. In 1964, a cyclone completely destroyed Dhanushkodi, as a train was about to enter the station, the tracks and the pier were heavily damaged & many children lost their lives buried alive in the train aboard. Hence the name Ghost Town Dhanushkodi came into limelight.
Details on Rama Setu or The Adam's Bridge-
Ram Sethu, also known as Sethusamudram and Adam's Bridge is a stretch of limestone shoals that runs from Pamban Island near Rameshwaram in South India to Mannar Island off the northern coast of Sri Lanka.

Hindu believers as per ancient texts hold it as the structure that Rama and his army built to reach demon king Ravana's Lanka. It was the site of the proposed Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project by the Government of India for dredging the entire straits to make it navigable by large ships and create fishing and shipping harbours in the coastal areas because today, ships bound for India's eastern coast have to circle around the entire island of Sri Lanka to reach Tuticorin, Chennai, Vizag, Paradip and other ports. It has been claimed that that the successful completion of the project would cut traveling by about 350 nautical miles and will save 10 to 30 hours' sailing time. This is still under wraps as the Hindu's believe this bridge is of great historical importance and it must not be destroyed. The Carbon Dating of the bridge suggests it was build 1,750,000 years ago hence proving it should be man-made.
