Ramadevara Betta (Hill) is a Hindu shrine rising more than 3000 feet. Lord Ram is said to have visited here during his 14 years exile. This is one of the place where Rama, Lakshmana and Seetha did their vanavas(live in the forest). This place has a pond which was made by Rama using his power with an arrow, because seetha was in need of water to take a bath.
Idol of this temple is many 1000 years old and it’s a very rare sculpture. Seetha is sitting on the lap of Rama. There is one more significance of this place, this is the place where Jhatayu (Vulture) fought with Ravana to save seethe and killed by him, but Jhatayu waited till Rama returns to narrate the story of the kidnapping of seethe by Ravana. Vultures still live in this place and they also breed here. So Indian Government declared this place as an only Vulture sanctuary of country.
During Ramayana , King of Vanaras , Sugreeva established this idol when Lord Rama helped him in killing Asura Sukasura. This was later identified and renovated by Kempegowda, the founder of Bangalore. There is a small pond , which they refer as Sita pond . There is a mystery behind this pond and nobody knows how deep it is . Once some foreigners visited here and tried to measure the pond depth using some instruments , they went till 2000-3000ft with no end and returned back with no clue.

Ramadevara betta is also known for the critically endangered Indian long-billed vulture sanctuary.
The Mysuru ‘Royal’ family had noticed nesting and breeding activities on the cliffs and notified it as a vulture sanctuary under Section 17 of the Mysore Forest Regulation on September 17, 1917. However, the final notification on declaring it a vulture sanctuary was issued only on January 30, 2012.
The Indian Vulture (Gyps indicus) breeds mainly on crags in the hills of Sind in Pakistan, Central and Peninsular India. The birds in the northern part of its range, once considered a sub-species, are now considered a separate species, the Slender-billed Vulture Gyps tenuirostris. Together they are called Long-billed Vulture. The species breeds mainly on cliffs. Like other vultures it is a scavenger, feeding mostly from carcasses of dead animals which it finds by soaring over savannah and around human habitation. They often move in flocks. The Long-billed Vulture has a bald head, broad wings and short tail feathers. It is smaller and less heavily-built than the Eurasian Griffon, usually weighing between 5.5 and 6.3 kg and measuring 80–100 cm long and 205 to 229 cm across the wings.

MUST visit places near Bangalore | Ramadevara Betta, Sholay hills Ramanagar | Most dangerous climb
how we ended in Ramadevara Betta? well, on republic day we thought to take a ride in city but plans changed and we ended up riding to this little known gem of a place called Ramadevara Betta which is just 53km from Bangalore. this is a vulture sanctuary but to see vultures you should stay at night, which we couldn't. They have a mandatory fees of 25Rs per person and 10Rs per bike. The famous Sholay movie was shot here. To reach the peak it's near vertical climb so be careful and I recommend you to wear shoes.
The translation of what the priest said

Ramadevara Betta Trek Ramgad of Sholay shooting location Vulture Sanctuary Ramanagara near Bangalore
Ramadevara Betta Trek also the Ramgad of Sholay; Sholay shooting location. Indias only Vulture Sanctuary at Ramanagara Tourism, Bangalore Tourism and Karnataka Tourism.
About 70 kms away from Bangalore, Ramadevara Betta Hills is a popular spot for treks near Bangalore within 100Kms. It’s the famous spot where the Bollywood Blockbuster ‘Sholay’ was shot. Standing tall at the height of 3900 ft, Ramadevara Betta is located in the outskirts of the Kyatsandra town. From the highway Ramadevara Betta appears as massive rocky mountain with a vast plain on the peak. The summit of the hill has a temple of Lord Rama, and frequented by many devotees. This hill had also featured in one of the famous movies called “Passage to India”.
There are two temples at the top- One being Rama Temple another being Rameshwar Temple. From the foothills, you need to climb around 400 steps to reach the fist temple. The route is in the middle of the forest and is quite exciting
While climbing the stairs, you can see few more temples. But, the best part is that in between the staircase, you can take deviations and enjoy some breathtaking views in between. Such deviations, helps you to catch your breath and enjoy some natural beauty.
At the top, you will find Ramadevara temple. This temple is believed to be more than 1000 years old. Some people believe that Lord Rama had visited this place and killed the demon named ‘Kakasura’ who was ruling the hills. From that day onward, not even single crow fly near the hill! Well I didn’t really observe any crows flying around this place..!!
From this point near the temple you can have a good view of the hills and places around. The view of the Ramanagara city and granite rocks formations provides excellent scenery around. The scene of landscape covered with rocks and granite hills and thin vegetation is a treat to enjoy.
From Ramadevara temple you can witness a natural pond. This pond at the hilltop is called ‘Rama Tirtha’. From the hill top, you can get some fantastic views of this lake. It is believed that the depth of this pond is still unknown. Due to safety reason, this pond is fenced to prevent people from accessing the pond.
Just around 50 meters from Ramadevara temple, you have Rameshwar Temple. Actually, Rama Tirtha is in between these two temples. Beside the Rama temple, there is a way to go on top of the hill. This route is little difficult to climb. You need to walk through the forest and hills. There are few spots where you can sit and enjoy the cool breeze and scenery.
You have to almost trek a hill on a 70 degrees track. This is not that tough as you have railings which you can utilize to trek. But once you climb this, you can get amazing view of Ramanagara town, and other hills. On reaching the top you will enjoy 360 degree panoramic breathtaking views. From this point you can see all the seven hills which constitute Ramanagara.
In this peaceful environment you will enjoy the smooth blow of cold wind and a blanket of greenery in the valley. Ramanagara is a place which has the endangered vulture sanctuary. From the hilltop, you can witness these endangered vultures flying around the sky. Apart from the views, you have some cactus at the top and green grasses in patches. Its absolute bliss to be here at the top and you won’t feel like going down.

Ramadevara Hill, Ramanagara as Religious destination
After fun with nature from past 2 videos, it is time to respect the deity in concluding video of my Ramanagara visit. The prominent importance to the place is the presence of Kodandarama temple at the summit. Being festive season, the place was crowded than my previous visit. Hope you enjoy the brief visual introduction of the magnificent hill temple. Unfortunately I forgot to capture glimpses of Anjaneya and Shiva temple. I will cover them in my next visit probably!

Ramadevara Betta
It’s around 60KMs from Bengaluru. It’s a good weekend destination from the hustle bustle of the city. We can park the vehicle at the base of the hill and we need to climb around 400 steps. There’re two temples on the hill top.
It’s believed that Lord Sreerama and SItadevi has visited this place during the exile (vanavasa).
Ramatheertha: It’s a water body seen near Rameshawara Swamy temple. It’s believed that during the period of exile, Sitadevi and Lord Srirama visited this place and there was not a drop of water to quench their thirst. Lord Sreerama pierced the ground with his arrow to derive the water body. Since then, the water has never been dried off in this place.
The place is also a vulture bird sanctuary. Around 2000 vultures said to have lived in this place and now only very less number of vultures are here as it is getting endangered.
It’s also called Sholay Hills. The popular Bollywood movie of earlier 70s was done at this place. The common man of Ramangara were the junior artists for the movie.
Apart from the hindu myths, it’s a good trekking destination through the lush green forest.
Timing: 9AM to 5PM
