Market and Ramkhamhaeng National Museum Sukhothai - Thailand 4K Travel Channel
Before we visit the Ramkhamhaeng National Museum we take a look at the Sukhothai Fresh Market which is only open in the morning. The Sukhothai Fresh Market is near Wat Traphang Thon in Sukhothai Old Town. It is a typical Asian market which is not frequented by many tourists.
In the morning, mainly locals buy fruits and vegetables, but above all meat and fish for their daily use. The freshness of the fish can be recognized by the wriggling of the living animals. Grilled chickens are particularly popular. On partly self-built barbecue grills the production runs almost fully automatically.
After a short visit, we continue to the National Museum.
The Ramkhamhaeng National Museum in Sukhothai in the historic old town of Sukhothai is a regional branch of the National museum Thailand.
Due to the heat, we were not in the mood for visiting the museum, but at the end, we did not regret our visit.
In the lobby, we see a model of the historical town. During the tour, it helps to identify the individual places geographically.
The museum shows exhibits from the early history of Thailand. Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn, today's King Rama X inaugurated the museum in 1983. The occasion was the 700th anniversary of Lai Sue Thai (invention of the Thai script).
So it is not surprising that comprehensive alphabet panels in the main building already try to give the visitor an understanding of the Thai script. Next to it iyou see a labeled stele with the government declaration of King Ramhamhaeng. Supposedly the first document that was written in Thai script. Thus, King Ramkhamhaeng is designated as the inventor of the Thai script. The stele is a copy, the original is in the National Museum in Bangkok. Today experts sometimes doubt the authenticity of the stele.
Although we see many Buddha statues, the untrained eye quickly recognizes Hindu sculptures. Shiva is also present here. It is not surprising because the early Thailand, dominated by the Khmer, was characterized by Hinduism. Later King Ramkhamhaeng introduced Buddhism as a state religion.

Sukhothai Historical Park - Paying respect to King Ramkhamhaeng
King Ramkhamhaeng the Great was the most famous monarch of the Kingdom of Sukhothai and ruled from 1279-1298. He is regarded as a valiant warrior. At age 19, Prince Khamhaeng participated in his father's successful invasion of the city of Sukhothai, formerly a vassal of the Khmer, establishing the independent Sukhothai Kingdom.
He is also considered a wise statesman, a scholar, diplomat and benevolent monarch to his people. Under his reign Sukhothai was both prosperous and well governed.
He is credited with the creation of the Thai alphabet in 1283, which has little altered to this day.
He also established Theravada Buddhism as the state religion of the country.
Hence, King Ramkhamhaeng, is highly esteemed by the Thai people, and his bronze statue in the centre of the Historical Park in Sukhothai attracts many Thai people, daily, to pay their respects.

Some artefacts date back 1,300 years. They are very rare and outstanding.

Sukhothai, Outside the Historical Walls - Thailand 4K Travel Channel
During our ride from the Vieng Taiwan Sukhothai Guesthouse to the Sukhothai Historical Park, the tuk-tuk driver tells us that everything is organized differently as in Bangkok. One does not bargain with the drivers, here you have fixed prices. A trip in the historic old town costs THB 50.-, around € 2.-. Also, you can book tours, e.g. for 4 hours. Unfortunately, we do not know the price anymore, but we think it was THB 300 (without guarantee). In any case, it is cheap and worthwhile. We accept the offer and agree on a tuk-tuk tour the next morning.
We arrive on time and the first stop on our tour is
Wat Si Chum is surrounded by a wide moat and accessed via a wooden bridge. Already from afar we see the Mondop, a huge stone block. On the sides are the remains of former assembly halls with further Buddha statues.
Only when approaching, you can recognize a gap at the front of the Mondop. Behind is the a huge Buddha statue Phra Achana. The name of the Buddha image means, one who is not frightened. The statue is 15 m high and 11 m wide.
The outer walls of the Mondops have a thickness of 3 m. In the interior, which is reached by the narrow passage, one can hardly grasp the dimensions, since the room is very small. Probably, the Mondop once had a wooden roof.
The Buddha statue makes an elegant impression. Primarily the gold-painted hand hanging down. It is among the most popular photo motives of Sukhothai. King Ramkhamhaeng mentioned the Buddha statue already around 1290.
We continue our tuk-tuk tour. We are fascinated by the cows that live peacefully live in symbiosis with the herons between the temples.
On a small detour to a temple within the historic walls, we reach
King Sai Lue Thai founded Wat Sorasak in 1412. This is documented on a stone inscription in the Ramkhamhaeng National Museum. The author was presumably an envoy of King Intharacha of Ayutthaya. He should protect the interests of the king against the vassals.
The Chedi was built in Sinhalese style, also referred to as Sukhothai style. This is supported by a square base, decorated with 24 elephant statues. One has the impression the elephants carry the Chedi on their backs.
After a short stay we continue. Already from a distance we see

Sukhothai (Thailand) Travel - Ruins
Take a tour of Ruins of Sukhothai in Sukhothai, Thailand -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The ruins of Sukhothai, Thailand's first independent capital, display the remains of the location where many of the Thai customs were first created.
The 70 square kilometer area contains an abundance of Buddhist and Hindu ruins of temples and monuments.
The ancient city was established in the 13th century, marking the peak of the Thai kingdom and its culture.
The town is separated into two parts, the ruins which make up the National Park, and the modern town of the same name in which its citizens dwell.
Icons scattered throughout the decayed temples, such as this seated Buddha, can be as tall as eleven meters.
The art and architecture of Sukhothai's 193 ruins represent classical Thai style.
The best mode of transportation to ruins is either cycling or walking since the roads have patches of shrubbery.
