Between 1715-1716, the Knights of St John began building a series of fortifications to guard the bay to prevent the invaders and pirates from disembarking at ease. The plans were further developed by the French military architect

Ramla Fougasse
Built by the Knights, the fougasse is a rock-cut cannon with the axles pointing at the probable route that the enemy would take. It is charged with a barrel of gunpowder and loaded them with rocks. It is to discharge a shower of stone to damage the enemy galleys.

Ramla Bay - Gozo - Malta
This is Gozo’s, and arguably Malta’s, best beach. A wide stretch of red sand, it is often referred to locally as “Ramla il-Ħamra” – the Red Sandy Beach! Ramla is a wonderful place to swim, snorkel and chill out in the sun.
The area around the beach is wonderfully undeveloped, although there are a couple of cafes and a stall set back from the beach. The sand dunes are protected and the valley leading down to the bay is green and fertile. The terraced walls built by the farmers give the valley an appearance of a quilt when viewed from surrounding high ground.
There is myth and history here too. Roman remains lie beneath the sands and Ramla Bay is reached from ix-Xagħra, on one of the hills overlooking the valley, or from the village of in-Nadur.
Exploring Calypso's cave near Ramla Bay in Gozo, Malta
Located a short distance from Xaghra or a pleasant walk from Marsalforn (my choice) it overlooks the red sands of Ramla Bay. It is assumed to be the cave referred to by Homer in `The Odyssey' where Calypso, the beautiful nymph kept Odysseus as a `prisoner of love' for seven years. The cave is a tight squeeze in places and requires a torch but it's worth the trip just fot the view.
