In the recent book, 50 Fabulous Places to Raise Your Family, Vista was voted #7 of the 50 best cities in the nation. With an average of 340 days of sunshine a year, its only natural that fun and recreation should dominate Vista's style of life. The Vista Parks and Community Services Department operates a total of 15 community parks -- six times the national average -- that includes theaters, museums, recreation centers, picnic grounds, athletic fields and specialty sports parks.
Vista is home to the Wave Waterpark, the only family aquatic center in North San Diego County. The Wave is a great compliment to Boomers and the Vista Entertainment Center, which offer great family fun! In addition, the Moonlight Amphitheatre and the Avo Playhouse, draw thousands of Southern Californians each year to experience award-winning productions that have made Vista a cultural hub.
The Rancho Buena Vista Adobe provides students and visitors with hands-on educational and research programs by which they can trace local history. And the Alta Vista Botanical Gardens harmoniously incorporates education, nature and art with its living classroom, remarkable plant life, and public art.
Located on 40 acres of rolling farm land in Vista, the Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum is a non-profit organization that evokes nostalgic memories of rural lifestyles and family traditions. Unique from many museums, the equipment is maintained in operating condition and used in Museum programs. The Museum's collection focus on the period from 1849-1950 extensively coving agriculture, construction and early industrial trades. Exhibits include blacksmith & wheelwright shop, country kitchen & parlor, steam & gas industrial power units, gristmill & sawmill and farm equipment from horse-drawn through modern row crop. Annual events include a Civil War Reenactment in March and a Threshing Bee and Harvest Fair in June. Click here for details. Additional event reservation information.

Politicians pass largest gas tax in California history
Establishment politicians have passed the largest gas tax in California history. But I heard you loud and clear.
I shared real concerns and stories from hard-working Californians in the Inland Empire about how this tax will make life harder.
Tonight I echoed the words of families and constituents across the Inland Empire; this gas tax will hurt families and workers.

The Roberto Adobe, San Jose, CA
I recently visited the Roberto Adobe in San Jose, CA as part of the background research for my next historical fiction novel, All That Glitters. The Roberto Adobe existed in San Jose when my fictional character, Daniel, would have passed through San Jose to see the historical person of Virginia Reed, whom Daniel met as a 13-year-old on the wagon train out West. Virginia’s family settled in San Jose and several streets are named after them, including Virginia, Martha, Margaret, Keyes, and Reed. The docent for the tour, P. Bernal, is an 8th generation descendent from a Bernal in de Anza's expedition that first brought European settlers to the San Francisco and Santa Clara Valley area in 1776.
My current work in progress unfolds the tale of an orphaned teen and his younger sister who must choose between survival or justice, forgiveness or revenge, when they travel West with the man who leads California settlers into Yosemite to rout out marauding Indians. As a middle grade historical fiction novel, it will relate to the 4th grade social studies curriculum when students study California history, especially the gold rush era, and feature STEAM activities at the end of each chapter.
