A Bartow couple on a birdwatching trip came across something that really ruffled their feathers: A 6-foot, 100-pound diamondback rattlesnake.

Places to Dive
La Jolla Shores: La Jolla Shores can be found by turning west off Interstate 5 toward La Jolla. From La Jolla Shores Drive turn onto Avenida de la Playa, which leads directly to the beach. Straight offshore, it's flat and sandy, perfect for beginners. Further offshore are the dark blue depths of the La Jolla
Isla Los Coronados: These three islands are actually off the coast of Mexico, so the only way to get there is by boat. It's an hour and a half ride to the clear waters of Los Coronados, with undersea visibilities in the 50-70 foot range. Seals, sea lions, sun stars, sea slugs, abalone, and eels populate the big boulders underwater. currents off Los Coronados run very strong.
The Yukon: On July 13, 2000, the Canadian destroyer Yukon was intentionally sunk two miles off Mission Beach, in an 600-acre underwater area known as Wreck Alley, where four other sunken vessels also rest on the bottom. At 366 feet long the Yukon makes an imposing artificial reef, and quickly attracted the fish and undersea life that has made the vessel a local favorite among divers and sport fishermen.
Point Loma Kelp Beds: There are two kelp forests off the San Diego coast, A series of unique shelves along the bottom. The depth of the beds vary from 35-80 feet, or stay relatively shallow. phenomenal visibility within the beds and their offbeat character make this a must. Local dive boats make the trip every day, and experienced skippers know the best spots to enter the water for the ideal dive.

Cycling and Kayak Trails - Lower Rio Grande Valley Active Plan
Lower Rio Grande Valley Active Plan 2016 is unifying the region around one vision: To become the premier destination for Active Tourists.

Beauty surrounds us in South Texas. From the pristine beaches of South Padre Island, the beautiful oxbow waterways known as “Resacas” in Brownsville and San Benito, to the stunning subtropical flora and fauna in the area’s many wildlife preserves, the Rio Grande Valley is a year-round recreational paradise for visitors and locals alike.
Much of the allure of our region is its blending of two cultures. Straddled between the US and Mexico border, this area attracts tourists from all across the globe.
Past efforts to promote tourism targeted those who enjoy golfing, fishing, birding or beach-going. However, demographics are changing the definition of tourism which is dramatically moving toward the more active tourist.
And studies show that most tourists now want to discover a destination by bicycle or on foot, rather than by car— and are just as likely to adventure into a wildlife preserve on a kayak, or even cycle many miles to experience first-hand the nature, local culture and history of a place.
With everything the Rio Grande Valley has to offer, active tourists are paying more attention to our region, and it only makes sense that we strive to capture and grow this crucial market.
The active tourist has a higher discretionary income, spends more time in a community, and tends to favor “local” versus “chain businesses.” There are tremendous opportunities for local entrepreneurs to flourish and make the Lower Rio Grande Valley one of the premiere destinations for active tourism, giving a focus to economic growth that benefits the economy and creates infrastructure that our local residents can enjoy.
Our greatest assets in Cameron County lay in the natural beauty of our coastlines, waterways, wildlife, weather, culture and history.
The Active Plan boasts 170 miles of off-road trails and a 100 more miles of on-road routes enhancing the existing Texas Tropical Trail network. It also features 60 miles of Kayak Trails from Port Isabel and South Bay to Harlingen and San Benito. The goal is to link all of our cities and their natural, unique and historic attractions through an active transportation and tourism network. This plan builds off the existing efforts in each of our communities to create the necessary infrastructure and framework for regional cooperation. This impressive and unprecedented effort is bringing together 9 cities in Cameron County to collaborate, share resources, market and promote one unified Active Plan.
There is growth in this sector already, so now is the time to plan and invest for the future. Whether a Stand Up Paddling Boarding rental and lessons in Rancho Viejo or the new 7th and Park Bike and Coffee Shop along Linear Trail in Brownsville, Millennial entrepreneurs are investing in this market.
An Active Tourism plan that creates a map for enhancing local habitats, wildlife, and our rich history and unique culture ensures we will preserve and grow the legacy of our unique home for generations to come!
Not only will our active tourists enjoy our trails and a healthier lifestyle, but our locals will too.
For anyone looking for an adventure, the Rio Grande Valley is the place to go!

You are paddleboarding next to 15 great white sharks! - CA police warn beachgoers
California paddleboarders found themselves in what resembled an outtake from 'Jaws' when the chilling announcement was made that they were just metres from a school of around 15 great white sharks.
In helicopter footage taken by Orange County Sheriff's Department, the creatures' forms, which the aircraft's occupants observe are 10 feet (3 meters) long, could be seen through the clear water just off the California coastline.
A loudspeaker announcement could be heard coming from the helicopter saying that the area is heavily populated at the moment with large great white sharks and that the creatures have come as close as the surf line.
The paddleboarders are then advised to exit the water in a calm manner.

Santa Rosa Beach Florida 5 BR Gulf Front Vacation Rental Home, 143 Seaward Dr
Magnificent Gulf front vacation choice is a Florida cottage style home in the popular, gated, Sunrise Beach subdivision of Santa Rosa Beach, along scenic Highway 30A. This is a Gulf-front home (right behind the dunes of Sunrise beach), with direct access to the Gulf and its emerald waters. Loaded with amenities for the vacationer eager for fun and peace of mind.
One of our recent renters left this assessment in our Guestbook: 'What a view! This is the best beach home we've ever leased. The kitchen is so well stocked. This is the very best yet. Thanks.'
Almost everyone double checks with us on this point so here goes: this is a Gulf-front home, right on the beach, not near or close to the beach, but directly on the beach. The backdoor opens on a small patio area and the walkway directly past the dune and onto the great white sand. You most probably can't get closer to the Beach in a Beach front home in the Panhandle area.
The home was built in 2000, and is new, neat and offers amenities such as tiled balconies on both the second and third floors, and quality sleeping space for 21 adults or children; however, we limit rentals to 14 adults to ensure a quality experience.
Seaward at Sunrise offers a gourmet kitchen, a large master suite on the third floor opens onto the deck and endless views.
Nine foot ceilings are offered on the second and third floors. This is a spacious 2800+ square foot vacation spot.
You're only seconds from the beach and the water at this great vacation home. The house is directly in front of the dune of Sunrise beach!
The nearest cross-roads to the Sunrise beach subdivision is the intersection of County Hwy 30A and CR 393 (Gulf Place Shopping Center and Ed Walline Park are at this intersection).
