A trip around the wonderful track at the Rand Society of Model Engineers in Florida just outside Johannesburg. Kudos to the members and staff for their dedication and passion, this is a rare find. I had a really awesome day out. :-)

We visited the Rand Society of Model Engineers situated at Len Rutter Park in Florida, Roodepoort, which is the place for miniature steam trains
RSME has been in Rutter Park since 1986. They are open to the public on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month.

We currently run two (2) party sessions from Monday through to Saturday (Except Wednesdays). A morning session from 10am to 12noon and an afternoon session from 2pm to 4pm. On Sundays however, we offer only one 2hour session from 11am to 1pm or 12noon to 2pm.

The track consists of multigauge ground level track of 3.5, 5 and 7.25 tracks. The track comprises two circular loops, the shorter of the two is about 450 metres long, while the longer is about 850 metres long. The total running surface of the track is almost 1,6 km's. The vertical height difference between the highest and lowest points in the track work is 5 metres. The average ruling gradient/s is 1:100 to 1:80, although there is a section of track which is graded to 1:50 for approx 60 metres.

Visitors are encouraged to bring their locomotives (each steam locomotives must have a valid boiler certificate, presentable on request.) Drivers' licences for all forms of traction are required. All motive power must conform to S.M.E.E. standards for flange and back-to-back wheel profiles.

S.A.R. Class S1 Load Test

This 5 gauge South African Railways Class S1 built by Graham Armstrong is seen here at the Rand Society of Model Engineers, Johannesburg, South Africa. After numerous light-engine runs, it was time to couple a load on to see what the locomotive will haul. The load was hauled with ease on the steeply-graded R.S.M.E track.
